Overview

Puntarenas House Rental Photos and Description

Two Bedroom jungle house on exclusive, private bluff overlooking beaches below

Casa Jungua, built purely from sustainably grown and harvested greenheart woods, has an extremely low impact on the environment yet offers a level of elegance not matched by many. The house is exclusively solar powered yet features washer / dryer, refrigerator / freezer and other amenities one would expect from a “wired” home.

Casa Jungua has a large back deck “the monkey porch” for the daily acrobatic jungle shows (performed by all four species of the Osa monkeys) and a full-length front porch providing breathtaking views of the sea as well as incredibly cooling breezes. In the house, when the large expanse of windows and doors are open, you can experience the Osa signature 'open air living' yet with the comfort and security of SCREENS.

The front yard features an inviting pool and timber framed pavilion that is suspended over the jungle and looks down on Lower Matapalo a colorful surfing community and it's beautiful beaches. From this vantage point our guests enjoy the sunrise, watching a wide variety of wildlife, surfers, fishing boats, and even (occasionally) humpback wales while dining, enjoying a morning coffee (or happy hour), practicing yoga..... or simply lounging.

Casa Jungua is built atop an exclusive bluff (with incredible hiking trails) far off the main road which not only affords great privacy and quiet but cooling breezes and incredible views. We border the property of an incredible, world renowned eco lodge where you can make reservations for meals and/or nature tours.

At Casa Jungua we strive to create the atmosphere of an eco resort within the privacy of your own home and property. For a nominal fee you can enjoy the services of our talented chef. This not only eliminates the stress of planning and cooking meals, it ensures NO DISHES and allows you to have more time to either relax or explore.

About Edward & Lynn O'Hara

The O'Haras fell in love with the Osa Peninsula at first sight and their love has only grown stronger in the years that have followed. Because they care deeply about the environment they decided to build as responsibly as they could. To help preserve one of the last incredibly bio diverse places on the earth, they made sure their footprint was light. Their hope is that more and more families visit places like this, experience its indescribable beauty and come to the understanding that by our every day actions, we can all become better inhabitants and proud stewards of this beautiful planet.

Edward & Lynn O'Hara purchased this house in 2013

Why Edward & Lynn O'Hara chose Costa Rica

Cabo Matapalo, where the dense jungle meets the sea is one of the most jaw dropping, breathtaking places we have ever witnessed. The advantages of buying on the bluff are many. Not only are the views unmatched, we enjoy the kind of quiet and privacy one wants when communing with nature..... as there are (in the "heights"), only 4 other "neighbors" within thousands of acres. The bluff, rising up from the sea below also affords welcomed, cooling breezes.

What makes this house unique

A quiet, peaceful oasis perfect for getting away from it all. A place to meditate, practice yoga and to reconnect with nature.

Peaceful, beautiful escape

  • 5 of 5

Ed and Lynn have built an exceptionally well designed and beautiful property which makes for a perfect jungle retreat.

The house is open, airy and comfortable - has everything you need in a well designed and thought through space that makes it a delight. The pool outside is perfect for a dip if it's getting a little hot, and the little 'pagoda' is a wonderful chill out spot, from which we saw dolphins and breaching humpbacks out in distance of the Golfo Dulce on several occasions.

The grounds are open and had lots of wild visitors - we saw howlers, capuchins and spider monkeys all walk by the house, as well as macaws and hummingbirds and even a sloth!

You can walk to the beach - though it is a steep return - and there are various places nearby to take a hike (though the owners of Bosque del Cabo seem less open to outside visitors now than they might have been in the past).

Ed and Lynn were very responsive hosts, and full of information and ideas - they really made us feel welcome.

I would strongly recommend a good 4WD in this area - at least in the rainy season when we visited.

Really a lovely place to escape the noise and hubbub of modern life and just chill in wonderful surroundings.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The owners of this house have created a paradise for themselves and their guests. The view is breathtaking, the pool refreshing and the wildlife incredible. The first day we were awoken by Howler monkeys who showed up off the back deck to munch leaves. The next day the Capuchin's came to inspect and the next day the spider monkeys and after that squirrel monkeys. Macaws, Toucans, Parakeets, Coati's abound --, even an armadillo showed up one night. Be absolutely sure you hike up the river by Martina's to the waterfall/swimming hole! Breathtaking. Be cognizant of the fact that you are off the grid and running on batteries at night, during which time I suggest that you only run lights and fans (and fridge). Taking showers can turn the well pump on -- shower before dark. And be prepared for a climb if you plan to go down to the beach -- it is not a simple stroll and not for the faint of heart. I recommend our Youtube video: Costa Rica Vacation Vol I -- search for it on Youtube, keyword Casa Jungua. The owners have also posted additional videos under Casa Jungua.

Perfect place to take a vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed a week at Casa Jungua. We loved relaxing in the pavilion and watching the monkeys and birds. The howler monkeys were right beside the house one day and howled for 30 min. We were amused daily by the antics of the capuchin, spider and squirrel monkeys. Scarlet Macaws frequented the skies and trees by the house as did the Mealy parrots and Toucans. We saw Coati a few times. The trail to the beach was an adventure. We always saw something interesting on the way down or back. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about the house. Even the view from the shower was beautiful. I can't say enough about the caretakers Casey and Camila. They were very accommodating and cooked us some amazing meals. Camila made us some tasty Hibiscus tea and Casey made us coconut and pineapple milk. We also ate at Martina's Bar a couple of times too. It is just a few minutes away and has really good food. It was a wonderful vacation! I couldn't have asked for anything more!

Paradise Found!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed at Casa Jungua for a week and it is without a doubt the most incredible vacation we have ever had. We rented a SUV in San Jose and actually enjoyed the 6 hour drive. Once we arrived at Casa Jungua we never wanted to leave! The house is beautiful, perfectly designed and situated right in the jungle, yet on top of a gorgeous bluff overlooking the Gulfo Dulce. A steep, yet short hike down and you find yourself at a pristine (and what felt like private) beach where we swam with sea turtles one day! We were also able to walk to surf lessons at neighboring beach. We planned a few day trips (nature hikes at Piro and to nearby waterfall), but honestly the highlight of our trip was staying home at Casa Jungua - relaxing in the pool, reading, playing games or doing yoga in the gazebo, and all the while watching incredible wildlife from the beautiful backyard. On a daily basis we saw: spider, howler, capuchin and squirrel monkeys, a coati family, gorgeous macaws, toucans, green parrots and even armadillos! The one thing we never saw was a single mosquito, so we took turns sleeping in the gazebo where there were wonderful breezes and the stars are amazing. Caretakers Casey and Camilla were extremely welcoming and helpful. Ed was great to work with and provided tons of useful information. We can't recommend Casa Jungua highly enough - paradise found!

Not enough Superlatives in the Language

  • 5 of 5

Casa Jungua is truly an extraordinary experience. The combination of the absolutely stunning location and the splendors of the surrounding natural setting are truly enhanced by the marvelous architecture of the house itself along with the landscaping. You will not want to leave there once established, so it must be emphasized that any and all provisions must be brought in from Puerto Jimenez prior to arrival, so as to avoid a return trip to the market. Also - be advised that the driveway can be indeed treacherous with very steep inclines and some sharp turns, thus 4 Wheel Drive in 1st Gear is required to safely navigate one's way in or out of the property. If you enjoy literally "getting away from it all" and being surrounded by nature in it's purest sense - while not sacrificing most modern conveniences and luxuries, this Mount Olympus in the Costa Rican Rainforest is an intoxicating perch where wildlife reigns supreme above the expansive views. Also, the caretakers Tarasita and Julio who live a stones throw away are extremely helpful and friendly (and tolerant of those whose Spanish is somewhat lacking). Simply a Heavenly Getaway!

Beautiful Place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Casa Jungua and had a wonderful time. The setting is spectacular with beautiful views of Golfo Dulce. The house itself is lovely and peaceful. Birds and monkeys are plentiful, and so fun to watch (although don't plan to sleep late unless you bring earplugs as they make quite a racket starting early each day). Casa Jungua is a great place for a real getaway.

One thing to note is that you will be quite a long drive from the grocery store in Puerto Jimenez (about an hour away), and the house is not stocked with any supplies. I recommend that you buy soap, shampoo, coffee, water, etc. on your arrival to avoid having to make extra trips into town.

Owner's Response: Thank You. We are happy that you enjoyed your time at Casa Jungua. Yes, the wildlife is indeed plentiful and vociferous. However, one tends to operate on a natural rhythm when down there so, you just get used to rising with all of the fine feathered (or furry) friends. I mean, how many people get to say that they were awakened by the call of the Howler Monkey? The reason we recommend purchasing ALL of your consumables on your way out to the house is that it is so remote and it is that remote location that puts you in touch with the jungle and all of its inhabitants while enjoying the pristine untouched beauty of one of the world's last frontiers. Thank you for choosing Casa Jungua and we hope that you can come stay with us again.

The Osa Peninsula is one of the world’s primary eco tourism destinations. Blanketed with virgin tropical rain forest and edged in black sandy beaches and rocky outcroppings, there is much for the nature enthusiast to do and see. With four species of monkeys, exotic birds, and countless amphibians and reptiles, our guests will enjoy experiencing theses magnificent creatures up close in their own natural environment. Since Casa Jungua is flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west and Golfo Dulce to the south, there is also a variety of aquatic activities available such as surfing, fishing (inshore and deep sea) snorkeling, kayaking and swimming. The Osa Peninsula is home to Corcovado National Park, one of the largest protected nature preserves in the world and offers exciting day-trips for travelers, however given our incredible location, many have said that they have seen more wildlife just sitting on our front porch. In Puerto Jimenez, the main town on the tip of the peninsula, guests can enjoy shopping, dining and the local culture. If you are lucky, you just might catch one of their many festivals. We would be happy to help you get in touch with some incredible guides so that you can make the most of your experience on one of the world's last frontiers.

Notes:
Casa Jungua has 110-volt outlets (like the U.S. ) for charging electronics (no adaptors needed). All of the houses in the Matapalo area are eco-houses that use solar power. Solar power is a renewable energy and thus helps to reduce global warming. The house is powered with 12-volt solar power, so please be conservative with your use of energy. Usually the light during the day is sufficient to light up the rooms, as the sun rises at 5 and goes down around 5:30pm-6:00pm. There are also showers with hot water, heated up through solar power. Please do not bring coffee makers, radios, stereos, hairdryers, and other appliances a typical 120-volt outlet will support. These appliances will drain all of the solar energy, leaving none for basic use. You may bring battery chargers for your video and still cameras. Unplug this appliance when finished charging. We recommend to turn off all lights, fans and other small appliances when not in direct use.
