County Kerry Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Relaxing Holiday Destination - perfect for couples

The 'Solar Lodge', is the entrance lodge to a large country house. This cottage is a very large studio space which is situated above the Bay of Ballinskelligs with unique views of the ocean and near the wild atlantic way, mountains and surrounding country side. This property has been tastefully furnished with great love to detail and offers a luxurious and peaceful holiday accommodation. The cottage is an ideal destination for 2 people and honeymoon couples. The 'blue flag' beach of Ballinskelligs, 1.5 kms from the cottage is world renound for its beautifull location, safe swimming and water sports. The Skelig Rock where part of the latest 'Star War' movie was filmed, is just a couple of kilometer drive from the cottage and is one of the most popular places to visit in the area. A beach Cafe, pub, restaurant, shop and post office are in walking distance from the beach. The moderate Irish climate which is influenced by the closeness of the Gulf Stream, makes it a destination which is both in the summer as in the winter a place worth a visit. We have tried our very best to make your stay as comfortable as possible and look

forward to your visit. We only use eco friendly cleaning products in this property which will benefit asthma sufferers etc.

Loved the solar lodge

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the solar lodge for 1 week in August & were really pleased with the lodge & it's surroundings. Doris & Tim were so friendly & helpful we really felt at home. The lodge is spacious & clean & modern but cosy too. The beach was also not far & we really enjoyed having lazy days walking along the beach. The view from the lodge is fantastic, you can see for miles. If we return to Ireland we would definately stay here again.

The Perfect Honeymoon Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our first visit to Ireland after a busy few months Wedding planning and a brilliant Wedding day - the Solar Lodge turned out to have been the perfect choice for our honeymoon, and I mean PERFECT! Beautiful, clean, comfortable, eco-friendly (solar powered) lodge with STUNNING views and surroundings. Sky TV, DVD player, hammock in the garden, countless books meant that days in were just as lovely as trips out. You can't count on the weather in Ireland so we went prepared for all weathers - it just so happens that we had 8 straight days with no rain, and often bright sunshine! Would advise you to still prepare for anything though as it can change hour by hour. Even if it had rained, we would not have been disappointed as the surrounding sea and mountains lend themselves perfectly to dramatic stormy scenes and walks in the hills and on the beach were still lovely whatever the weather.

We had flown to Cork from Bristol and then hired a car. The lodge proved very easy to find using AA directions to Ballinskelligs and then Doris and Tim's directions to the lodge itself - making a very stress-free start to the holiday. Our hire car enabled us to easily reach the nearby town of Cahersiveen (20min drive) where a good size supermarket could be found (SuperValue).

The Killarney National Park makes a great day trip at about an hours drive and the Torc Waterfall, Muckross House and Ladies View, in the park are WELL worth a visit. Valentia Island also makes a good little day trip (about 15 minute drive from Ballinskelligs to the bridge across to the Island from Portmagee). We had a lovely meal out one night at QC's fish restaurant in Cahersiveen, eating amazing freshly caught fish. We had quite a small budget and still had a great time, but there is PLENTY more around the area to do if you have a larger budget!

Other days were spent enjoying the lodge and private garden, exploring, walking and relaxing on the beach at Ballinskelligs (10 min walk from the Lodge) and having drinking tea/coffee at surrounding cafes wherever we went.

To top it all off, the owners Doris and Tim couldn't have been more lovely. Helpful, generous and available whenever we needed them. Their home (The Solar House) is right next to the Solar Lodge but for the most part you wouldn't know they were there and it really felt like we had a beautiful haven all to ourselves. We would thoroughly recommend the Solar Lodge to all our friends/family and will definitely be returning to Ireland again!

Cozy Country Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The solar lodge was a gorgeous place to stay on a winter’s week. The lodge was cozy, clean and peaceful. The location was great, as we were not too far from tourist towns, but we also were able to enjoy the Irish country feel. The beach and waterfronts were amazing. Doris and Tim were wonderful hosts and we would certainly recommend the solar lodge as a great place to stay!

Midsummer in Kerry

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, comfortable, clean accomodation - very well designed, spacious & warm, & facilities are excellent. Stunning views & lovely sheltered garden with hammock. Tim & Doris are wonderful hosts & provided helpful information & advice for visits, resturants & trips etc. The local resturants, outdoor activites, & arts/music were all fantastic depending on your preferences. Local people were very friendly & helpful. Nothing we disliked at all! We found so much to do, that 2 weeks were not enough. The only 'bummer' was we had to come home! We would certainly recommend this property to friends & are planning to visit again in the autumn.

Great place for a romantic get away

  • 4 of 5

Solar Lodge is certainly well away from the hustle and bustle, and this is just what we were looking for. The stunning views and very stylish and comfortable furnishings meant we had a nice time just relaxing in the cottage. However, there is plenty to do in the area and in spite of bad weather we had a great week getting out and seeing the sights of Kerry. The fully appointed kitchen meant we could self cater in style and as such the holiday was fairly inexpensive in comparison to staying in B&Bs and having to eat out every night. Tim and Doris are very congenial hosts and we loved the fascinating paintings that Tim has decorated the cottage with. Solar Lodge is thoroughly recommended (but the weather is out of their control!)

Solar Lodge

  • 5 of 5

We lost no time in locating the Solar Lodge as the directions provided were excellent. We were warmly welcomed and shown around the property and gardens and were immediately impressed with the quality of the accommodation - comfortable; functional and stylish. The views from the Lodge are breathtaking - rolling countryside, mountains and the sea.

Situated in Ballinskelligs Solar Lodge is ideal as an escape fom the "rat race" and to recharge the batteries - although I did find the WIFI internet access very useful.

Despsite its out of the way location we found the property to be a very useful base to explore the Iveragh Peninsula - the drive to Kenmare is beautiful and we got to the National Park in Killarney in just under an hour. Portmagee and Valentia Island are practically on your doorstep and Cahersiveen is about 20 minutes away with plenty of shops to stock up on all the essentials you will need for your stay.

Overall we rate the Solar Lodge as excellent and we hope to return soon.
