***Our private yoga shala is completed! For those of you looking to practice yoga, surf, and stay somewhere with outstanding views in one of the The Top 10 Beaches in the World (Santa Teresa/Mal Pais, Forbes Magazine, 2010) this is the place for YOU!!**
Casa Toucanet gets it's name from the colorful toucanet birds that frequent the fruit trees on this beautiful property. The house sits atop a small hill approximately 215 ft. above sea level and a 10 minute walk from Playa Mal Pais and a 20 minute walk to Santa Teresa and Playa Santa Teresa. This vacation home has the view, location, jungle scenery, and privacy we love. We selected this home for this very reason. The home was completely remodeled in 2013 and it has a bright and airy feel. The bedrooms are air conditioned but sleeping with the doors and windows open is an option that allows you to hear the gentle roar of the ocean and the early morning sounds of the howler monkeys and parakeets.
The home has a small living room (sala) and the sofa is a twin bed that will accommodate an additional person, a full kitchen, dining area, an outside patio downstairs, 2 1/2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and a scenic veranda upstairs. All of the doors and windows in the house are custom made from teak. The upstairs floor is also teak and the downstairs floor is finished with a custom made mosaic tile.
The property also has a separate two story casita where our on-site caretaker lives. We will be happy to assist your during your stay and coordinate any tours or activities you desire.
We purchased this property because it was away, but not too far away, from the center of activity in Santa Teresa. It's on a small hill at the end of a short and very private road and the views are exceptional. The house needed remodeling so we were able to make the modifications to make it 'ours'. It's not fancy but it is bright, clean and has everything you would need to enjoy your time away from home.
This place is ideally situated: out of the fray of Santa Teresa but close to all and with a stunning view of the ocean. You often almost don't want to leave the house if it weren't for the beckoning expanse of gorgeous blue water. Yes you need to have a 4x4 vehicle but you will want one regardless to explore beyond the immediate area. The house itself is extremely well maintained and well appointed and was spotlessly clean when we arrived. Sheryl the property manager was very attentive and always available when we had questions or needed tips about the area. The house is on the smaller side and great for a couple who wants a little more room but could comfortably sleep a family or small group with its design; I wouldn't recommend it for those with small children as the central staircase is open and only has a railing on one side. Bottom line: I can't recommend this place highly enough and will miss it after we leave. One tip: skip the neighboring hotel for a sunset cocktail as it is over run with spring breaker tourists. Instead hit one of the places on the beach e.g. Caracolas right down the hill which has amazing margaritas.
The property was exactly as described: It sits atop a hill (spectacular views), up the road from a small boutique hotel. This means there is very little traffic (quiet). The view is so spectacular that we would make it a point to be on the second floor balcony every night at 5:30 -- no one wanted to miss a single sunset!
The house and surroundings were exquisitely maintained. I would even say the photos do not do it justice. It really is that beautiful. It was just the right amount of space for 4 adults. My parents loved sitting on the balcony every morning and just listening to nature.
The property manager (Sheryl) was extremely helpful and attentive. She and Mike helped set up massages and yoga classes in the pavilion in front of the house, at reasonable rates.
The trickiest part about this location is transportation. It's a give and take - you give up some convenience for the privacy and seclusion. The nearest beach access is about a 5-10 min walk, and these beaches seemed less crowded than the ones in Santa Teresa itself.
While we really enjoyed the privacy of being a bit outside of the main town, beware that it is a good 10-15 min walk to the edge of Santa Teresa, and probably another 10 min to additional stores (eg, grocery) and restaurants. The road to the house, while short, is a hefty hike up a hill, and definitely requires a 4x4. Rent an ATV, or take a taxi. After you get your first, most drivers are happy to give you their Whatsapp contact for repeat business, so they're only a text away if you need them.
Caracoles: best restaurant with local style food, beach front views
Vista de Olas = Nearby small hotel with a good pool and a bar (if you need a day off from the beaches).
Yoga and massage offered on-site highly recommended
Overall, this property was the perfect mix of relaxing and unique/off-the-beaten-path. For those of you allergic to all-inclusive resorts, this is the place for you.
10/10 would recommend.
The house was beautiful, private and serene and open to perfect views of the setting sun - ideal for good conversation on either the lower patio or upper deck. Didn't need the air conditioning in the bedroom - just drifted to sleep on the super comfortable mattress listening to the sounds of the ocean. Had the best ceviche ever prepared by a local who lives in Mal Pais. Cheryl, the property manager, was always available to answer any questions and offer suggestions for activities. A Captivating Getaway!!
Every morning I sat with my cafe con leche on the back deck as flocks of toucans, flittering hummingbirds, howling monkeys, cicadas and more made a cacophony of sounds while I stared out on the Southerly swells hitting the break I would eventually would make my way too - never hurried because the scene from the back deck in the mornings was too good and so was the coffee. The place is set back far enough to avoid the chaos and dust from the main road, but walking is still an option (albeit a steep hill back). Minutes to all good surf breaks and a short journey to the gulf side where the Southern swells wrap in nicely too. A resort place a few doors down gives you access to a sweet infinity pool (two drink minimum) if you are so inclined, but be forewarned, you may have to deal with some moronic tourists there (like any resort I guess). You'll be happy though that you're walking home to a sweet pad. Yoga deck proved to be amazing. We used it every day. You're going to love this place.
Arrived on a Saturday night overlooking the Pacific and a full moon. Straight out of a movie. First trip away with my girlfriend and the environment, setting, area and beaches were amazing. The house is quiet and has lots to offer. We splurged and did couples yoga on the outdoor deck followed by massages. The personal chef in the evening was hilarious and cooked up some amazing stripped bass (the kitchen is a fully utilized space where you can prep and cook pretty much everyday, make sure there is enough gas in the tank). Few things to definitely take note of because of the dry season etc: get a proper 4x4 to get up the hill because of all the dust on the uphill portion, grab toiletries for use as there are none, know to get the 5 gallon water jug swapped in any town supermarket although using the well water from the tap was fine as well. The town has lots to offer from surfing, horseback riding, eating amazing food and immersing into the beach life with great outdoor activities and nightlife. Mikey will help guide you throughout via WhatsApp and arrange things for you without fail, as was the activities we had planned on the property as well. Some great spots to east for breakfast were the Bakery and smoothie spots although you can crank those out with the blender at the house! We highly recommend horse back riding at Star Mountain with Osvaldo, great guide, and Miguel who has horses near Manzanillo beach just north of Playa Hermosa. We cannot wait to go back in the wetter seasons and explore some more jungle and trek around to discover some waterfalls and zip lining!
Casa Toucanet was perfectly situated to enjoy the terrific surf beaches of Playa Carmen and Playa Santa Teresa while still being far enough away to have privacy from the bustle of the town.
Michael and Jess who host you while you stay were fantastic. We would highly recommend surf lessons from Michael if you are thinking about taking them. He was fantastic.
The house was as advertised, unbelievable views and great places to take advantage of those views. It is also situated a few doors down from a great boutique hotel that has a terrific pool to watch the sunset from.
We found this area to have some of the best food that we had in Costa Rica with some of our favourite places being Nativo Sports Bar (Amazing spot for a drink and great food) and Zula (Israeli food and the best food we had in all of Costa Rica).
We fell in love with Mal Pais and would recommend staying at Casa Toucanet
Casa Toucanet is walking distance from Hotel Vista de Olas, which has an onsite infinity pool bar open to the public daily after 4pm.
