About the property

2 bedroom/1 bath cottage, private and centrally located in the Puna District

If you're looking for a place to relax, unwind and reconnect with nature then this cottage is the perfect place for you. Its nestled in the lush rain forest where you'll be soothed by the natural sounds of wind through the trees, frogs chirping and birds singing.

Spend your days simply reading a book on the lanai or exploring the natural beauty of the island. The cottage is centrally located for all the Puna District has to offer. I'll provide a guide book of my favorite spots to explore including Warm Ponds, Tide Pools, Volcano National Park and numerous farmers markets.

The cottage comfortably sleeps 2-4 people and has two bedrooms. The front bedroom is off the kitchen, has a full sized bed, a private sliding glass door to the front lanai and direct access to the bathroom. There is a folding screen that can be used for extra privacy from the rest of the house. The back bedroom is entered through the french doors, has a queen sized bed, and private access to the backyard.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, stove, microwave, coffee maker, french press, dishes, cooking equipment, rice cooker as well as some of my favorite cookbooks. I have a DVDs, CDs, books and internet for your at home entertainment. There is a TV for watching movies however cable is not available. There is a boogie board and snorkel gear as well as beach towels for your outdoor adventures.

The ¼ acre property is surrounded by large Eucalyptus, Ohia and Avocado trees. Nestled amongst those are a large variety of plants and fruits including: bananas, pineapples, pomelos, tangerines and many tropical flowers.

Come slow down and experience the Aloha!

Peace and Privacy

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 5 weeks for a break away from Michigan winter. The cottage was clean, comfortable and private. Everything we needed to make our stay convenient. It involves a bit of driving to cover all the beaches, parks and attractions, but they don't call it the big island for nothing. We had great communication with the owner, Emily, and a very prompt refund of our security deposit after our stay. Thank you Emily for an enjoyable stay.

Lovely cottage in the bush

  • 5 of 5

We really liked our stay. the cottage is very cute and well equipped, there is everything one might need! The surroundings are lovely too, all different kinds of plants, fruit and flowers. Only an hour drive to volcano park and close to great food places and a black beach. We loved the frogs and didn't mind their sound, which cannot be said about wild hens and roosters. They gave us some hard time, being really noisy through the nights! The internet was not working, not sure if this is always the case, or there was something broken within the network but we could not connect from the cottage. Other than that highly recommended!

Nice and private but a little neglected

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at Hibiscus Cottage with our very close friends. The Cottage is very private and the only visitor we saw was a rooster. There are avocado and pomelo trees (with passion fruit vine on it) behind a house. The cottage is on the ’rainy side of Big Island’ so it is damp inside (what is to be expected). There are two dehumidifiers and they help. What is missing is lack of ‘owners touch’. When we arrived there were only three coffee cups, not too many dishes (broken?), pots stored by previous renters (not necessarily where they should be). Nobody tried to straighten the kitchen before next renters arrived. We had at least three light bulbs burnt out. After contacting the owner we got two coffee mugs (not matching anything already in the kitchen) and two light bulbs (obviously used). It looks like originally the dishes were a set but right now it looks like “Goodwill donation”. There are clothes/bags in closet that probably belong to the owner (not marked) but they make you feel like you are invading somebody’s space.

The cottage advertises as two bedroom – which is not. One bedroom is separated by French door, has also back door to the outside and entrance (covered by curtain) to laundry/broom closet. Behind the bed somebody put a low bookshelf (highest shelf is not much higher than the bed). This set up doesn’t allow you to lean back to read a book since there is no ‘back’. This bedroom has no closet, just the dresser full of towels (we took the towels out and put them on a washer).

The other bedroom is really a kitchen annex with no door. One wall is taken by patio door, one is a closet (with doors not working properly). On the wall with entrance from the kitchen there is also door to the bathroom. It means whoever goes to the bathroom has to walk 4-5 ft from the bed (and go around dresser). We kind of knew about it (there was a comment posted earlier) but it can be annoying at night. There is folding screen door but if you put it up nobody is going to the bathroom that night.

Before arriving at Hibiscus Cottage we spend few days in very well appointed condo in Kona (and not much more expensive) so the contrast was really striking.

Good value but don't like the mildew

  • 2 of 5

The house is nice and has everything you need but we were quite disturbed by the smell of mildew which was especially poignant in the back bedroom. We pointed this out to the owner who advised to use the dehumidifiers to get rid of the smell. But that didn't do anything for it which could also be expected. I think the house has mould problems somewhere in the structure, and that would need to be found and sanitized to get rid of the smell. So if you are sensitive to spending time in the smell of mildew I would advise you to choose a different property. Otherwise this is a nice place which offers good value for money. We couldn't get over the smell though so unfortunately didn't enjoy our stay.

Owner's Response: I was quite concerned as soon as these renters informed me of the smell because I had not experienced it before and neither had my care takers, so I was worried about what was happening. I had the house inspected immediately and there was no evidence of a mildew issue in the house or the structure nor was there evidence of a mildew odor. The house is located in the middle of a thick, wet rainforest which produces quite a bit of fragrance from the rain, trees and plants, this is my best guess at what they were experiencing. I do take all concerns very seriously and address them when presented. In this case though I am unable to change the fact that my home is located in a tropical environment. I am deeply sorry that they did not enjoy their stay, the sole purpose of opening my home as a rental is to provide a cozy place for travels to call home and to share the aloha. I've never failed to accomplish that until now and I hope I'll never fail again.

A Great Place to Stay in Puna District

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 4 year old son, & I spent a week at Hibiscus Cottage while exploring the Eastern side of Hawaii. The cottage was perfect for our needs, it is clean, tidy and nicely decorated. Pretty much everything that a small family needs for a stay in Hawaii is at the cottage (including snorkelling gear & boogie boards)!

The yard is great with fresh Passion fruit available around the back, a huge avocado tree on one side, plus bananas and pineapples (if they are ripe).

The property can get a little hot inside during the day, but it wasn't a problem as we were out most of the day, and at night it cooled off nicely (with the help of the ceiling fans). The local Coqui frogs take a little getting used to, as they are a bit noisy...and there was a cockerel or two nearby which seemed to crow very early..but that was easily solved with earplugs! There were a few mosquitoes around in the early evening, but some repellent and appropriate clothing kept them at bay.

The cottage is situated on a quiet road, about 5-10 mins from Pahoa, and about 20-30 mins from Hilo. It is nicely situated for visiting the lava flows at Kalapana, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. For snorkelling/swimming the Kapoho tide pools, and Ahalanui Beach Park were a hit with my 4 year old.

I would certainly stay at Hibiscus Cottage again, and think it was a bargain price-wise!
