So much to do... so little time!! You'll have to come back!
This was to be the last few days of our road trip so we were looking for somewhere special. We definitely found that somewhere special here.
This house is fantastic and kept to a very high standard, providing everything we needed for relaxing in, while being so close to the delights of the surrounding areas, such as Sausalito, Muir Woods, Muir Beach (The Pelican pub) and of course the city of San Francisco.
It was a delight to return to the house after a day out, cook our own meal and sit and relax in the ample and various spaces provided, especially the balcony overlooking the valley, while the fog rolled over the hills.
Cindy was very attentive and available if needed, making us feel very welcome and at home from arrival. We would love to stay here again if we make it back to San Francisco. Thank you Cindy for providing a memorable end to our holiday.
Let me start this review by saying that the Mill Valley area is absolutely beautiful, and was the perfect place to stay during our San Francisco vacation. We highly recommend this area!!
Positives: As advertised, the property is very quiet and there is wildlife in the area. Also, the house was accessible to some nice hiking, which we took advantage of. The owner was helpful with travel tips.
The rest of the story: The owner actually lives in a downstairs unit, which is not made clear in the property description. Upon arrival, we were told that we could not wear shoes- other than slippers- in the house, or "walk loudly", as it would create noise in her unit downstairs. Additionally, we were notified via text within 30 minutes of leaving the house on the first day that we had set the thermostat incorrectly. Another text the next day advised us that we had left a fan on in a bathroom. The feeling was that, as soon as we left the house each day, the owner was entering right behind us, checking throughout the house for violations. Our family has rented many times through VRBO- two other times where the owner was actually living at the same property-- and have never felt so much as if we were on "pins and needles". Not exactly the atmosphere you want when you're on vacation!
As another reviewer mentioned, the upstairs carpet was wrinkled and had areas where the carpet seams were actually coming apart. Also, we did notice a musty smell upstairs; leaving the windows opened helped. The front load washer was mildewed.
The downstairs bathroom had a cork floor installed. Upon check-in, we were told that we must be diligent about water on this floor, as the contractor had not installed the correct underlayment, and water might leak through. The owner had a rolled up pair of men's boxer shorts in the corner on the floor, which apparently was there to prevent water damage. The toilet in that bathroom had flushing issues the entire time we were there, and overflowed on our last night.
The most disturbing issue is that the owner has retained our very large security deposit, attempting to place responsibility for her faulty flooring installation on our family. Unfortunately, we are likely going to have to retain legal help with this.
Save your vacation and rent elsewhere!
Cindy’s place is as advertised: lovely, comfortable, and scenic. The kitchen is a bit small but everything works, there is counter space, and it is a pleasure to work with two ovens. The two living rooms, one equipped with a large TV and one with a smaller one, are cozy. The bedrooms are good, and the porch is excellent, with a nice view. All good.
Visitors should know that there are thirty steep, narrow, and twisting stone steps from the road down to the front door, and there is no hand rail. Also, if Cindy is in residence (she can stay in the completely detached first floor residence and was a totally unobtrusive presence during our stay), there is one parking place in the driveway and sometimes-available street parking located uphill from the house. We had three cars present only for Thanksgiving, so it was not too inconvenient, just surprising.
If you read the rental agreement, you will see that Cindy requires a photocopy of the driver licenses of all guests, and she does ask for them, so be aware.
My family and I (2 adults and 2 children, ages 15 and 20) stayed in this lovely home on our vacation to the San Francisco area. It really was the best of both worlds. We could get into the city easily, which we did each day to explore and eat at some fabulous restaurants. But we could also hike right from the house or after just a quick drive. One day we drove a short distance to Muir Woods to hike through the redwoods. The visitor center gets extremely crowded and parking fills up quickly, but because we were close, it was convenient to get there early before the crowds showed up. Host was very flexible, allowed us to check out a little late on the last day, since our flight was at night. Overall wonderful experience.
Our family stayed at this charming house for three nights after visiting family in Hillsborough and the East Bay. Planned some day trips to San Francisco, Sausalito and Tiburon. It was the perfect location for exploring, hiking and eating our way through Marin County. Plan on taking a ferry as we did from Sausalito to the Ferry Building! The house was spacious and clean with all the amenities we needed. It was very comfortable and nicely decorated. The view out the deck was breathtaking, especially when the fog rolled in! The host was attentive, gracious and very knowledgeable. We would highly recommend this house to anyone visiting the area for a few days or longer.
I enjoyed the short drive to Muir woods park, beach, Saucalito, and Goldengate. Comfortable house and host was easy to communicate with. I will stay again.
The house is nestled on the hillside facing the Marin Headlands, the views that you see from the decks. There are several trails you’ll enjoy exploring and can walk to right from the house. It is a very quiet safe community. A few minutes away are numerous restaurants, shopping for both essentials and boutique items. The bike trail is nearby for a lovely stroll or ride along the bay inlets and wet lands.
Per one of our guests:
“Cyndi was a great host and her house is the perfect situation if you are looking for access to Mill Valley's fantastic landscape, beaches, town, etc. Perfectly comfortable, well appointed, and an ideal house to rent if you have a few people in your group. Very much plan to rent again when I have to be in the area again.'
From the house:
MUIR BEACH & TENNESSE VALLEY BEACH - Do walk/ hike out to the ridge for sunset or the more challenging TENNESSE VALLEY BEACH or MUIR BEACH. The trails have wonderful coastal views. Or drive to the coast for speed and ease. Muir Beach has the Pelican Inn which is a great stop for an English brew or meal, or just a game of darts. You can walk to the trailheads from the house. Use your GPS to find 1001 Smith Road. Follow the pavement into what is a multiuse driveway and the trail head is right there! (go up marin drive, left on Alta Vista, Left at 3 way intersection onto Smith Rd. follow up to 1001. Look for gate and trailhead into Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
In the area:
MILL VALLEY is a quaint town to explore with boutique shops and restaurants. Check out the music scene at Sweetwaters. I’ve personally seen Grace Slick, Rod Stewart, Huey Lewis there, as well as around town. Over its nearly 25-year history, the original Sweetwater hosted performances by artists including Bob Weir, Carlos Santana, Clarence Clemons, Elvis Costello, Gregg Allman, Huey Lewis, Jerry Garcia, Maria Muldaur, Sammy Hagar, Richie Havens and many other musical luminaries. In 1992, BBC Television shot a documentary at the club featuring Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker and Ry Cooder. That same year, Hot Tuna recorded two live albums at the Sweetwater. The new club intends to carry on this storied tradition. The BUCKEYE ROADHOUSE (steak and grill) has very good food and a fun ambiance 15 Shoreline, Mill Valley, 415-331-2600. In Downtown Mill Valley, D’ANGELO’S (Italian) is fun favorite of the locals. Or just wander. There are numerous restaurants and quaint boutique shops. It is cute town to explore.
SAUSALITO is a cute town on the Bay to explore with fabulous views looking back at the San Francisco waterfront, Angel Island, Alcatraz, Treasure Island and Bay Bridge. It has lots of souvenirs shops.
TIBURON also has delightful San Francisco Waterfront views with less of the touristy feel. You can catch the Tiburon Ferry to Angel Island or SF from there. Guaymus has a great happy hour on the water, same as Sam’s for breakfast on the deck. We hook up there after a day of sailing….
MARIN HEADLANDS has fabulous views looking back at SF as well as numerous WWII Army bunkers and missile silos to find and explore… a bit of history in our backyard. Walk out to the Point Bonitas Lighthouse for a true glimpse of the entrance to the Golden Gate. They used to have a one person at a time swinging bridge to access the lighthouse… my thrill, which has recently been replaced, my disappointment… but safer.
RODEO BEACH- is a close drive. Checkout the Marine Mammal Sanctuary and Recovery Center and the small museum, and store while there. There are some wonderful trails to hike taking you up into the hills with fabulous views, fun exploration of more Army barracks, gun installation sites, and great exercise with Mother Nature.
STINSON BEACH – another wonderful and favorite destination. Twenty minute drive along the beautiful, rugged California Coast. Couple miles of beaches to wander or run. The town has numerous eateries, wine bars to catch a bite or drink, plus small shops and galleries to explore before or after your beach escapade.
SAN FRANCISCO- via ferry or driving, city life is a few minutes away. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, World class dining, diverse cultural neighborhoods, historic buildings and sights, the reknowned Fisherman’s Wharf and Waterfront Embarcadero Walkway, Ghiradelli Square, Alcatraz, Twin Peaks, Chinatown, Victorian Painted Ladies, shopping in Union Square, cheer on the Giants or 49er’s to victory, Lombard Street, Golden Gate Park, Cable Car rides, California Academy of Sciences, Modern Museum of Art, the new Exploratorium, Castro District… Check out the Farmer’s Market at the ferry Building (or the one at Marin’s Civic Center), Palace of the Legion of Honor, hike Land’s End Trail…. So much to Do and See! Enjoy!
