The Race Mountain House is set high on the slopes of the Taconic Mountains in Southern Berkshire County. Large, east-facing windows look out over a sweeping view of the Housatonic River Valley. In the early hours, the house floods with warm morning light and sunrises are spectacular. The inviting, creative design invokes a feeling of true retreat and relaxation, equally appropriate for an intimate getaway or a large group gathering. Enjoy direct access to world class hiking and a short drive to close-by Great Barrington and the attractions of the Berkshires.
The open floor plan centers on a great room, with cathedral ceilings, large fireplace, sunken seating area, and generous windows facing the eastern views. Reclining sofas are just asking to be lounged on in front of a crackling fire. The well-appointed kitchen easily accommodates the hustle and bustle of preparing meals for large gatherings- we’ve had a wonderful time testing that out! The dining table seats 10.
Four bright, comfortably furnished bedrooms offer flexible sleeping options. 3 of the rooms can be configured with a king bed or two twins. Crisp bedding and uncluttered spaces allow for a deeply relaxing night of sleep. Three full bathrooms, including one with a luxurious Japanese-style cedar soaking tub, all have tile floors and thoughtful lighting.
Special touches are sprinkled throughout the house, from the family-heirloom Steinway piano to the handmade copper chandelier above the dining table. Perhaps best of all, climb a ladder, treehouse-style, from the airy common area on the second floor to reach the loft. Wall-to-wall cushions invite cuddling, movie watching or the creation of an imaginary kid’s fort. Two decks, one on each level, and a screened porch provide space to entertain in the fresh air or to look out at the stars.
Race Brook Lodge is the Berkshires' most interesting Chintz-Free rustic mountain escape. We have 30 rooms and host all kinds of workshops and retreats, weddings, community celebrations and other gatherings. We also have an organic farm and outdoor education center where we grow food for our restaurant, The Stagecoach Tavern and host workshops in Permaculture Design, Natural Building and Organic Agriculture. The Race Mountain House is the newest addition to our family and we are very excited to welcome you here!
Casey Meade purchased this house in 2013
This is a sacred piece of land... sitting on the side of Mt. Race and surrounded by protected public land and Nature Conservancy reserves. It borders our B&B, Race Brook Lodge and our fledgeling organic farm where we grow food for The Stagecoach Tavern.
The house is very spacious and comfortable and the view is truly epic. There is direct access to great hiking trails to Race Falls, Mt. Race, Mt. Everett, Guilder Pond, and Sage's Ravine. It's also very close to Great Barrington and Catamount Ski Area. And you'll love the large Japanese soaking tub!
This is our second year renting this house for Memorial Day Weekend. The house and location are fantastic.
It would be great if the house had a functioning washer and dryer and a gas grill. It does have a charcoal bbq but a gas grill would be so much better.
I rented this place for a friend's reunion over thanksgiving holiday. The place is beautiful and designed with an artful taste. The view is spectacular and you can see all the area around it at a great height. There are nice trails nearby. Casey is great and very helpful.
This is a great house for a big gathering and for having a relaxed holiday. If you're looking for a place for big screen TVs and games, this is not it. This house provides you with a relaxed and zen environment to enjoy your friend's and family's company.
Casey's place was really lovely - just exactly as described! WONDERFUL central great room/dining room for our large group to gather and relax - and beautiful decks for reading, lounging, and admiring the mountain views! Our large party of 10 (plus a baby) from 4 different time zones gathered for our daughter's wedding at Copake Lake, NY. The bedrooms were so well designed, private, and comfortable. Great linen closet in the largest room that was a welcome sight for our large party and getting everyone out the door for all things wedding. It was so beautiful in late July - cannot image how it must be in the fall and winter skiing season! Casey was so easy to communicate with to set things up - available (although we did not need a thing), and professional. We would stay again in a heartbeat!
My stay the mountain escape was delightful. Our host was extremely communicative and accommodating. The views and trails were breathtaking and it is just a short ride from Great Barrington. If you need an escape from the city for the weekend, or a place to work for a week - this is a great option. Recommended highly.
Our experience with Casey and Dave at the Racebrook Lodge has been perfect each time, its our "home away from home". This house is their most recent addition and it is the GEM of the property. Absolutely gorgeous interior, complete with fireplace, decks, beautiful piano, spacious kitchen, and tons of rooms with beautiful views. Extremely comfortable and "homey", but also luxurious. We were so inspired while staying, we wrote a song on the piano. Perfect for an artistic retreat or getaway with family and friends. We can't wait to come back.
We had a great time at the Mountain house! We had 3 families totaling 14 people and we never felt like it was to crowded. The bedrooms are a nice size and the beds are very comfortable! The views are amazing! Casey got back to us quickly when we needed something. Kitchen is well stocked with quality cookware. We would definitely go back again!
The Berkshires are known as 'America's Premier Cultural Resort', and Race Brook is a short, scenic drive from the best of the area's attractions. Enjoy music at Tanglewood, a stroll at the Botanical Gardens, dance at Jacob's pillow, and all the natural riches of the most rural, mountainous area of Massachusetts. In the winter, enjoy nearby skiing and snowshowing. Great Barrington, the hub of south county, is just a short drive away. Billed as the 'best small town in America' by Smithsonian magazine, GB is a vibrant, bustling community brimming with boutiques, entertainment options, outdoor spaces, and friendly local characters.
Set on an 85 acre property, the Race Mountain House is surrounded by forest. Head out the back door for an incredible network of hiking trails; the Appalachian trail is right nearby and a short hike leads to Race Brook Falls. Though the Mountain House is set back privately, our affiliation with Race Brook Lodge, just down the hill, provides guests with easy access to a swimming pool and other hotel amenities, while the adjacent Stagecoach tavern offers a great nearby option for fine dining.
Vibrant gatherings, workshops, and classes occur in Race Brook Lodge’s unique gathering spaces and on the permaculture-based Race Brook Farm.
