Villa La Sirena or the Mermaids cottage which is undamaged by the hurricanes has been converted from an old fisherman's dwelling. It doesn't have a flush wall or square corner anywhere, but has been lovingly rebuilt and remodeled to be the dream vacation spot for one or two couples or any other small group that would be comfortable sharing a cottage with just 2 Queen beds .There are no cribs, cots or pullouts available or space for them. This very romantic villa is perfect for a honeymoon or an anniversary. The cottage is not suitable for small children.
This well built and secured house suffered no damage in the recent storms. We have electricity, safe drinkable water from the tap, hot showers and even internet. We have also drastically lowered our prices that were already very competitive. There is not a property of this quality, with these views, location and amenities anywhere on Vieques at a better price.
We have lots of towels and all the nice soft high thread count sheets are 100% cotton. Enjoy long hot showers as we have an on demand hot water heater for an endless supply. The mattresses are high quality. We have an assortment of pillows for every taste even a couple of down pillows if that is your preference. Both bedrooms have AC for warmer nights and overhead fans in every room.
The cottage has a definite nautical theme and been finished with an eclectic mix of antiques, comfortable stylish furniture, and beautiful things collected from around the world. There is an extensive collection of mermaids and whimsical art work, much of it done by the owner.
Overlooking the busy working harbor, the activity starts early and you can have your morning coffee or evening glass of wine on the ample deck and enjoy an ever changing panorama. Stay entertained Watching giant Tarpon hunt and the Manta rays coming in close to shore, dolphins, turtles and large schools of fish are seen regularly. Pelicans and several varieties of seabirds provide constant amusement. House binoculars and a bird book are available. Watch as fisherman and ferries come and go, charter sailboats take on guests just below you and then watch perfect sunsets over Puerto Rico in the distance. Later on in the evening, you can spot your favorite constellations among the thousands of stars visible on a dark night.
When you can drag yourself away from the view you will find a gourmet kitchen with everything you could want (and if not just ask, as the owners live on island ). There is a 4 burner European gas cook top, a micro convection oven, sturdy Kitchen Aid cookware, and a full size dishwasher lots of counter space, good knives and a gas grill. We are just above the fisherman's dock, you can walk down when you see them come in and buy some fresh fish or better yet some local lobster. We have several pots big enough to steam or boil a lobster or two. If you miss the boats, one of the fishermen lives a few houses away and you can go see what he has available or put in a special order. Of course there is a blender for frozen drinks and a coffee maker, coffee grinder, an electric kettle, toaster oven and some cool cook books to inspire . You will love cooking at home and eating on the deck BUT if you prefer, get takeout because there is not a restaurant on the island that has a view like this one.
If cooking is not part of your vacation program, don't worry you can walk to half a dozen restaurants and get delicious drinks at the local bars, some just a few steps from the villa. Yummy nearby takeout is available, Pizza, great seafood stew , smoothies or Puerto Rican Specialties are all available within a few step or a few hundred yards of the villa.
It is recommended guests rent a car for visiting the famous Vieques beaches, however you can walk to several grocery stores, Buen Provecho, the gourmet store has imported cheeses, and better quality meats and other treats ,The emporium has a great selection of spices and ingredients for more international tastes, two bakeries, the bank, the health food store, the post office and several gift shops and a gallery are nearby.
Runners and walkers will find pleasant routes to the East on the un congested roads along the ocean in the quiet neighborhoods of Bravos de Boston and Santa Maria.
Sometimes you will see locals swimming in the harbor right in front of the house, and just beyond the ferry dock you will see some pretty sandy spots that are suitable for taking a quick dip. HOWEVER Vieques' truly gorgeous beaches are located inside the Fish and wildlife reserve which is about a ten minute drive to the gate. There are many other beaches worth visiting, Green beach on the western shore, the three beaches inside the Sunbay state park , Black Sand beach and Playa Grande out beyond La Hueca. All of these beaches are just a short drive, and we recommend you rent a vehicle from one of the 10 or so licensed car rental agencies on Vieques. We do not offer a car with this property. Some guests chose to not rent and we can recommend several reliable local drivers who will be happy to chauffeur you to some distant beaches and further out restaurants . Publicos ,16 passenger vans that are a cross between a bus and a Taxi are available at the nearby ferry dock and meet all the incoming boats. They charge about $5 per person for a shared trip across the island.
If you enjoy walking ,you can walk from the cottage along the water to Sea Glass beach and beyond to some pretty beaches along the north shore.
Beach towels, coolers and good quality beach chairs are provided when you want to visit our beautiful beaches. We usually have a couple of Boogie boards if you want to try the surf at Navio or at certain times of the year, just around the corner in Bravos de Boston.
we are connected, there is reliable Wifi at the house and we enjoy a good signal for most cellular phone providers.
You can sleep well knowing the house is very secure with roll down hurricane shutters and modern security window and doors throughout. There is off street parking behind a convenient beeper operated rolling door. Mosquitoes do not thrive near salt water and have never been a problem at this property, but just in case, the windows and doors have screens.

Why Helen Davis chose Bravos de Boston
We first tried to purchase this property about 15 years ago for our own residence but it didn't happen, When it became available in 2012 , we jumped on it and used our combined talents, he a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker and she an artist/designer to create the perfect vacation cottage. It took eighteen months to complete and offered for the first time at New Years 2014.
What makes this Cottage unique
When we travel, we love to stay in places that offer us the option of walking to shops and dinner. We always opt for smaller intimate places and look for the word CHARM in the discription. We love to find places that feel like a family home filled with interesting collectables and art work. We want to feel the love. In Villa La Sirena we have strived to create exactly what we would love to find when we vacation.

Outstanding from sunrise to sunset
Always something to see, right from your deck. Ferry comings and goings, fisherman going for their early morning catch and walking distance to food. So enjoyed the Father's Day parade of horses and all the activities of the work week. Great fresh fish down at the dock, great little neighborhood bar just at the end of the street, smoothies, lighthouse park just up the street but we rented a car let us see the entire island. Views from high roads around the island were fantastic. Archeological rocks were interesting, view from the museum outstanding with all sizes of geckos and lizards.....we even had some lizards on our deck that came to visit. Check out Esperanza, the oldest tree and both wild life refuges. Got lost in the west side one but beaches for everyone in the eat refuge where you can go as far east as possible. Kayaked in the Biobay at night, and ate at many good restaurants from the guest book. Got a fresh fish from the wharf since it was less difficult to cook than lobster but the house has just the pot for lobster cooking too. Kitchen is well stocked with utensils and dishwasher works well. Laundry was a blessing, shower was great, and beds extremely comfortable. Played lots of games in the evenings. A few were there and rest my sister brought. Internet connection was good unless the bedroom door was closed. Early flight was not a problem, since rental office was on our way to airport and Maritza's allowed us to park the car at the airport for pick-up.
The Mermaid House
The Mermaid House in Vieques is located on the water above the fish market. You could see the the ocean from the patio deck and the fishermen coming and going. The house was appointed very nicely and had everything needed for a comfortable stay. It could get noisy at times but that is part of the community. Not far from town made it walkable to the market and stores. Our stay was just what we wanted. Would love to go back.
Earthy people, good food, great beaches
Good location, comfy house, had all we needed.
If you want to be in town, this is perfect. Terrific views.
A fine location in town with entertaining views of the ferry and small fishing fleet. It's an early morning start so be ready for that. Wonderful sunsets. The cottage is well equipped and secure. A couple of screen doors would be a good addition in the evening for those of us who don't care to use air conditioning. We enjoyed the cottage.
This place is magic!
From start to finish, the experience at La Sirena was A+. Helen and Maria were excellent communicators and so flexible with our requests. The cottage is clean, centrally located and so comfortable. It has everything you will need for your island experience.
Any of the "warnings" that Helen mentions in her listing are all true, but we loved it! The sounds of the fish dock (people, boats equipment), the roosters, the street noise, etc. It was not overwhelming and we found it so great, but if you are sensitive to this - you may not appreciate it.
I will be back and highly recommend this cottage if you are looking for the in town, central experience where walking, dining and relaxing amongst the locals is your goal.
Our favorite dining experience is Coqui Fore (Monday to Friday only). For casual and local, we liked El Yate, and conventionality, it is right next door!
If you stay here, take the time to walk the neighborhoods Bravos de Boston and Santa Maria. The mix of homes and views and the beaches are just great.
Have fun and be the envy of so many others while you stay at La Sirena!!
Perfect Vieques base
My husband and I spent 6 days at the Mermaid Cottage and would recommend it highly. It was very comfortable and felt homey. I think the best part was the location, with the view of the fishermen's dock as well as the ferry dock. Even when we weren't out exploring this beautiful island, we had the constant happenings outside to watch. We purchased lobsters from the fishermen (fish market is right close also) and cooked them on the grill, and ate them on the very large dock. I was initially surprised at how close the water is to the deck. While there is a road between the deck and the water, it's almost "under" the deck, and we could have thrown a stone easily into the water. Do be prepared, as others have mentioned, that because of the location this home is not in a quiet location - between the fishermen, the ferry dock, the road outside the front door, and of course the ever present Caribbean roosters who can't tell time - but those very factors are what make it charming. I have already recommended this place to a friend who's planning a trip to Vieques.
Watch the fisherman arrive with their fresh catch and walk down and to first choice of lobster and fish.walk to town for groceries and fresh bread in the mornings, several restaurants and bars just steps from the front door.
