|Minimum Stay||2 - 4 nights|
The owner is a retired seafaring Commander who dropped anchor on Bolivar and rebuilt this modern retreat after Hurricane Ike destroyed their original beach home. The 360 degree ocean and bay water views remind him of his time at sea in the wheelhouse. The beach and maritime motif can be seen throughout this beautiful retreat.
Sunrises over the Gulf of Mexico from your front porch and Sunsets over Rollover and Galveston Bays from the back porch or the lighted private pier are magnificent. There are redfish, trout, flounder, and crabs to be caught from the 150’ pier. Yachts, sailboats, kayaks, and commercial tugs and barges frequent the Intracoastal Waterway are just a few hundred yards off this private pier. It is only a short walk out the front of the house to the beach for surf fishing or to Rollover Pass for some of Texas’s best saltwater fishing.
After swimming, sunbathing or shelling on the beach out front, use the outdoor shower and hit the swim spa/hot tub and deck area back at the retreat. Watch sunset over the water and distant palms on one of the multiple decks. Crawl into one of several outdoor hammocks and let the sea breeze swing you to sleep.
The free Ferry to Galveston Island is only a 20 minute drive away where you can enjoy the Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn, The Strand, multiple restaurants, and other activities. The Commander’s Retreat is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, yet just a short drive if you want to hit Houston, Beaumont, or the casinos in Lake Charles which are just over 2 hours away.
We bought the original fish cabin 5 months before Hurricane Ike wiped us out. We rebuilt our home with every thought to living fulltime at some point. Alan is a retired Commander with NOAA who still works for NOAA in the maritime industry. Lynn works on the island in Galveston and can share with you all the 'secrets' of shopping and sightseeing on the island if you want to make the 20 minute ferry ride. We make our full time residence in Hitchcock, Texas along with our 16 year old Granddaughter.
Matt Kowaleski purchased this house in 2008
We fell in love with the property the first time we saw it even though it was only a 1 bedroom fish camp. So many of our friends gave us so much grief that Lynn finally made the statement 'we bought the lot, not the house. We will insure it and wait for a hurricane to take it and then build our Dream House'. Famous last words as 5 months later Hurricane Ike did exactly that.
We have wonderful views from every vantage point as well every possible option from fishing, beach combing, sunbathing, swimming etc. Whether you want to be adventurous or just kick back and relax, this is the place to do it.
a couple important things to me needed attending to and Matt was right on it from the get go.
This home away from home had all the perks I was looking for to bring in the new year with family and extended family but with the simple charm and cozy atmosphere which makes a home (in my opinion) a home.
we'll be back.
Our first time staying at the Commanders Retreat. This beach house has move to the top of our list as homes to rent for a weekend getaway.
When searching for a last minute getaway Matt's place served its purpose. Matt is super friendly and very easy to work with and is very helpful. The swim spa and the dock is what drew my family to this vacation destination. Upon arrival, the swim spa was missing half of the cover and both filters were filled with slime and muck. It took me the better part of two days to clean the spa to make it suitable to swim. The dock is not level and was a concern for my little ones. Also, when the tide came in, the water would rise over the dock on the low side. The yard and flower beds are unkept allowing the grass burrs to find their way into to house and embed in the carpet (not a pleasant feeling when you find one)! In keeping with the exterior of the home, I was unaware there is a small RV park next to the property. The decks to the home have some loose railings and protruding nail heads. The outdoor shower has a crack in the pipe and sprays water everywhere. The interior of the home is in need of a deep cleaning. The kitchen drawers and cabinets are in disarray and need simplification and organization. The wine refrigerator was nonfunctional. The A/C unit was in need of service and Matt was notified. This would be a great place to stay with better maintenance, upkeep, and attention to detail. Best aspects of this property is the owner Matt, close proximity to the water, and the views of the sunset.

I would recommend this house to everyone! The house and property are beautiful, décor done in fantastic unique pieces, and so spacious! It was packed with all the accommodations needed! Matt was always a phone call away if I had a question. My chosen family of friends had the best of laughs, fishing off the pier, chilling in the hot tub and just watching the sunset on the back porch. What a view! We will definitely be booking again, but until then cherish our memories from this weekend!
The Raiborns had a great time. The location was perfect with great bay fishing and ocean beach combing. The sunsets were awesome. We caught all kinds of fish, 2 black tip sharks, lots of flounder, rat reds, and a bull red. 3 sting rays, and a 4ft. 50 lb gar.
The beach house was very nice. Had ever thing we're needed and more. Loved relaxing in the hot tub in the evenings. We would have liked an earlier check in and later check out, which may have been possible, we didn't ask. We just couldn't wait to get there and hated to leave.
Great location for the best of both the beach and the bay. Fish from the 150 ft dock overlooking the Galveston Bay. Relax on the beach less than 500 ft from the front door. Come back and take a dip in the pool. Shopping in historic Galveston is a short ferry ride away.
