Haderslev's history includes a little bit of everything from ancient monuments, a medieval castle, a cathedral, as well as as the history of the German-Danish border conflict from 1864 - 1920. When you walk through the streets of the 700-year-old market town Haderslev, you walk along the same roads as people have walked for centuries. Even today the streets of Haderslev - from Ribe Landevej in the west across Torvet and to the harbour by Møllestrømmen - are the same as when the town was founded in the 12th Century. The town is very much characterised by its long history. The old town with the Cathedral and Square in the centre is - in spite of enormous fires in 1627 and 1759 - well-preserved and blessed with homes that date back to the 16th Century. In Haderslev you can experience 500 years architectual history.
In the heart of Haderslev you find Haderslev Dampark, which was established in 1958. In the park you find beautiful garden beds as well as a rose garden and an herb garden.
The old monastery cemetary with a number of preserved burial sites is located in the southeast corner of the park. In the cemetary you also find memorials for the fallen soldiers of World War I. In the park you can also find two playgrounds and you can take a trip on the water on one of the paddle boats that you can rent in the kiosk. In the northwest end of the park you find Old Haderslev Church, also known as St. Severin Church.
The Deer Park at Haderslev was established in 1994. It consists of around 40 ha of open plain and 20 ha of young plantation, while old wood covers 40 ha – a total of around 100 ha. The new plantations are protected by fences until the trees are big enough to withstand any damage by the deer. There is a summer population of around 200 fallow deer and 20 red deer in the park. Around 70 fawns are born each year, and the population is maintained by shooting and the sale of live animals to other deer parks. Both species of deer often travel in herds and they prefer the open plain.
In the same way our nature also includes a bit of everything from the wild and rough terrain found in Stensbæk Plantation in the Western end of the municipality to the luxuriant east with the fiord and the island Aarø.
Haderslev Municipality has plenty of water and is incredibly popular with anglers, both from Denmark and abroad. The coast offers a great deal of variation. You can catch sea trout all year and plenty of garfish in the summer - particularly at Råde Hoved, Aarøsund and Hejsager beach.
Sea trout, brown trout, pike, salmon and perch are all found in the waters around Haderslev, The streams Gram Å, Gels Å and Tørning Å has a combined fishing area of 50 kilometres - with amazingly beautiful surroundings. In recent years several restauration projects have taken place and today, the streams once again have their natural curves.
