After 11 years of living in London, England and traveling around Europe, originally from Toronto, David and Anita moved to Vancouver to raise their 2 children (ages 7 & 9). Anita runs an interior design company and David is an international opera singer.
Anita Curry purchased this house in 2009
After living in central London for more than 10 years, we wanted something quite and peaceful and found this amazing property in the woods which feels like we're living in a luxury resort away from it all but only 20 min away from downtown!
It has a private creek/waterfall which puts you to sleep, a nearby beach within walking distance, as well as, hiking trails and plenty of wildlife (deer outside the window). It feels like we're miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life but it's actually only 20 min (15 min with good traffic) away from downtown Vancouver and an hour drive to Whistler. We're 5 min away from Cypress Mountain for local skiing and can easily catch a ferry to one of the Islands. We can bike to the local village which has great restaurants and bars making this the perfect getaway home.
This VRBO caught our eye as we were planning our one-week vacation to the Vancouver area. We wanted to be away from the city, but close enough that we could get in without too much trouble. The location was perfect, and the villages within West Van of Dunderave (sp?) and the other one I've forgotten were great places to shop, and not too far away. There is easy access to the highway to get to the ferry or Whistler, and the recommended 'Rec Centre' offered us a peaceful morning when Vancouver's skies did what they often do.
I didn't realize that it was described as a 'tree house' before arriving; whether I missed it in the description, or the owners updated it since we booked, but it's a truly unique house that you can't really tell is clinging to the hill, until you get into the living room or onto the deck and look down. It really did feel like we were in the trees.
The babbling brook truly brought peace with it's ever-present song, the volume of which followed the precipitation.
The main floor is decorated wonderfully, almost too wonderfully for us as we had to re-arrange several pieces of display art and furnishings that we didn't want our toddlers bouncing on or swinging from. Luckily, the lower level is more lived-in than the main, and we played with the kids in the downstairs space.
The house is not without its quirks, but they are to be expected, as this is not a brand-new house, and more importantly, it is a home, so it's not 'perfect' like a rental-only condo or hotel. This would not affect a decision to return, though.
There were a few things that we noted and discussed with the owners, I suspect they were simply growing pains for a somewhat new listing - things that we weren't aware of, things that they could document for future guests, etc. The owners had given us contact information, and were quick to respond to the concerns we raised, even though they were in a very different timezone.
Travelling can be stressful, staying in a VRBO can be risky, but David and Anita made it a joy.
This is a perfect spot for a quiet family vacation, with plenty of access to all of the action of Vancouver. A wonderful quiet spot, with a gorgeous liv/dining room area, and a terrific wraparound porch. It's a bit of a drive to get to most spots (except the little private beach and lots of blackberry bushes!) but it's an easy ride to the "strip" in West Van, not much farther to Van proper, or in the other direction to jaunts north.
Unique property in the trees with private creek/waterfall, nearby private beach & hiking and plenty of wildlife. Feels like a 5* cabin in the woods but only 20 min from downtown Vancouver or 50 min drive to Whistler!!
The local village has plenty of restaurants, bars and shopping making it the perfect holiday home.
