About Holly Bailey

Hello, we are Troy & Holly Bailey from New Virginia IA. We are transplants from Maryland that moved to this beautiful state in 2006. We dairy farmed in Maryland and moved to Iowa to partake in its more laid back, less crowded atmosphere and get our hands dirty with the rich black soil that covers the state.

Holly Bailey purchased this barn in 2011

Why Holly Bailey chose Iowa

We needed a place for family and friends to stay when they came to visit so we turned our barn into a rustic hideaway that we thought others would enjoy too. And they do. The only complaints we get from our guest is that they don't want to leave.

What makes this barn unique

The landscaping is always changing here between a field full of soybeans or corn to the north ,a pergola covered in blooming wisteria, or tulips everywhere in the spring, how about the smells of the lavender that draws the butterflies to its purple luster, the birds always singing a song in the bushes and vines as they make their way to vibrant red birdboxes filled with chirping babies. The trees that shade you on a hot day as you relax in your chaise and catch an afternoon nap. Maybe you all but fell asleep getting a massage outdoors while you take in all these sounds and smells. (we have a massuse that comes and gives massages here at the barn) in the winter you can curl up by the fireplace with your cocoa ,watch the sun rise while you sip your cup of joe, watch the stars twinkle above your head as you gaze out the sky lights ,catch up on movie time, remember what its like to relax and enjoy life.

Charming & beautifully decorated little barn. Relaxing and inviting grounds.

  • 4 of 5

There isn't much I can say about this charming little place that we didn't like. It was perfect for our family to stay during our family reunion which was only 5 min away. Our family from Australia was really impressed with the set up of this barn and it's decor. Comfortable beds including the sofa sleeper. Very clean and it had everything we needed. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with a great seating area outside where you can enjoy your cup of coffee in the morning. Quiet and peaceful. We would have loved to enjoy the evenings out there but we were out most of the day to be at our family reunion events. Loved the sliding bathroom doors, very modern, but this type of door did not provide the privacy needed for a bathroom. Otherwise, everything else was just perfect and would highly recommend this place.

Beautiful, peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the barn was very tranquil and relaxing. We only stayed one night as we were passing through Central Iowa, but it was the best night of our week-long road trip. My husband (who was a bit skeptical about staying in a barn) quickly admitted that it exceeded any expectations he could have had. It had all the amenities you could want and was nice and cool inside as it was close to 100 degrees outside. It was also impeccably clean and beautifully decorated.

My Favorite Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

I found this place a few years ago while putting together a Central Iowa Wine Cruise for my husband and me. The rose bushes around the pond were in bloom and I fell in love with the wonderful landscaping! Holly is my Hero! The barn is so tastefully decorated and the breakfast was to die for! SO..... when my daughter from Denver decided to ride RAGBRAI, and I knew (assumed) that the route was going south this year, I booked 3 nights back in December. I hit 2 of the 3 nights!! My husband drove down to join us (my daughter and a friend). The 4 beds upstairs are super comfy. The first night we brought Subway home (right off the I-35 exit along side a very well equipped convenience store) and the 2nd night we cooked brats and sweetcorn on the gas grill. Breakfast was not an option as we were on the road before 6 am each day.

I'm not sure what else I can add that the other reviews haven't mentioned except my daughter's comment, "This is the best place you've ever taken me". I guess we agree on that one :)

Beautiful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 2 young boys and parents stayed at your home this past weekend. It was beautiful! The pictures do not justify the beauty and tranquility of this home. Our boys loved feeding the fish and playing by the pond. My parents spent many hours relaxing outside by the water as well. We wished we had stayed longer as planned this around the Indianola Balloon Festival and visited the covered bridges but in retrospect, would have spent more time at the house. We will be back again!

Beautiful retreat

  • 5 of 5

A group of women who went to college at U of Minnesota in the 1970s spend 3 days at the Rustic Barn. We all loved the barn, gardens, and pergola. It was hot so AC was great but we spent a lot of time outside too. Kitchen was well-equipped and easy to cook in. Bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for 6 women worked well. No problems at all. We went to St. Charles and Winterset for winery and covered bridges but spent most of the time visiting at the Rustic Barn. Barn and gardens were very well planned and executed-they thought of everything. We enjoyed the dog's visits too. Such a treasure in rural Iowa. All the out-of-staters were impressed.

Lovely, quiet, charming barn

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place to spend a quiet, relaxing overnight for our anniversary. The interior of the barn was so cozy and charming. The gardens, pond, and pergola provided such a peaceful setting to enjoy the dinner we prepared in the well-stocked kitchen. I wish we could have stayed longer.
