Completed in 2006 after 8 years of construction, Swede Dreams is a unique property perfectly suited for special events or large gatherings of family and friends. A 3-D tour of our beautiful home can be viewed through this link (copy and open in a new window):
This custom designed, 6 bedroom, 4 bath luxury log home offers Scandinavian charm and all the modern amenities needed for the perfect Tahoe vacation during any season. Located in the exclusive Tahoe Donner association of North Lake Tahoe, Swede Dreams rests on a quiet half acre of flat, stream-fed, wooded forest that is perfect for families with older members or those with young children. This home provides immediate access to the scenic Nature Loop trail and backs up to a preserved wetland area that houses a family of active beavers and countless bird species and squirrel families. A private natural spring on the property bubbles up into a small pool before babbling into nearby Trout Creek and ensures that even when other parts of Tahoe are dry and dusty, this property will sprout flowers, offers streams for kids to play in and attract wildlife of all sorts.
We bought Swede Dreams in November 2013 and completed a meaningful upgrade of the property since then. All kitchen appliances were updated, new kitchen counters were installed, and all new furnishings (including beds and bedding) were purchased. We also put a large hot tub on the back deck overlooking the preserved wetlands. For those who need to be in touch even during vacation time, we installed high speed WiFi (up to 50Mbps) and a roof-based cell phone booster which now provides reliable reception. We have DirecTV connected to four flat screen TVs (three bedrooms plus the Great Room) and have a full collection of DVDs on site in addition to the option of Netflix.
Swede Dreams was designed with both entertaining and children in mind. The 4,000+ square feet of living space is spread over the main floor and an upper floor whose separate sleeping areas are connected by a dramatic elevated catwalk overlooking the Great Room. Five bedrooms and three full baths are located on the upper level in three distinct wings. The south wing of the upper level holds a master bedroom with its own gas fireplace and another room immediately adjacent. In the north wing, there is a second master with a neighboring bunked bedroom, both of which open into a common bonus room alcove (essentially a 7th bedroom) designed to hold and entertain kids in a separate living space during early mornings or after hours when adults might gather downstairs. The upper level also has a bedroom on the west wing with its own deck and bathroom, 50'' flat screen TV and a delightful reading loft outside its door. On the main level is a final bedroom with its own bathroom—great for those who may have trouble getting up or down stairs. Older guests will appreciate that the front entrance, garage and entire main floor can be accessed with no more than one step up or down.
Since a good night's sleep after a long day on the slopes or hiking trails can separate a great vacation from a painful memory, we take sleeping quite seriously. Swede Dreams very comfortably sleeps 16 people in beds. Because we have never met someone who enjoyed sleeping on a pull-out sofa, all our beds are ‘real’. Our Master Bedrooms are outfitted with the same King sized beds used at the Ritz Hotel in SF (we called and asked them because we loved their beds!), and all our queen beds are of similar quality. All beds have been outfitted with luxury linens and duvets..and more than a few guests have commented that they have never slept better than they did at Swede Dreams!
With 9 separate zones of in-floor, radiant heat throughout the house, our guests should be able to find and maintain the perfect temperature without the noise, dryness and constant disruption that come from forced air heating. Our driveway is also heated hydronically, so nobody will need to worry about slipping when arriving at night or leaving for the slopes early morning. Perhaps more importantly, after a big dump, nobody will need to shovel his or her way out before heading up!
For the cautious traveler, Swede Dreams is equipped with a centrally monitored alarm system whose access code can be set remotely by the owner and customized for a given visitor. We also have integrated smoke and CO alarms throughout the house.

About Swede Dreams
We both grew up skiing and hiking with our families and bought a place in Tahoe which we hope will let us pass along to our own kids the appreciation and love for outdoors that our parents shared with us. Karin grew up in San Diego and would visit their family's ski house in Incline Village regularly growing up. Darius grew up in Telluride, CO and was a competitive freestyle skier until graduating from high school. We met during our years at Stanford and are now happy to live in the Bay Area (Noe Valley) along with our two daughters. Karin's parents were both born and raised in Sweden and we still make regular visits to the Leksand region. Many of the items adorning Swede Dreams are original Swedish works that have been in the family for years.
Swede Dreams purchased this House in 2013
Why Swede Dreams chose Truckee
We both had our first visits to Tahoe in the mid-1980's and since then have had the chance to stay at homes in many different towns and communities around the Tahoe region. We shared ski leases with friends in Squaw, Dollar Point, Northstar, Tahoe City...and finally in Tahoe Donner ('TD'). Once we discovered TD, we never considered renting a house anywhere else. Over the course of many years and various ski leases in different parts of TD, we came to appreciate the value of being in 'lower' TD with its lighter winds and snow loads (meaning the snowbanks usually maxed out at 10 feet instead of 20 feet during mid-winter). We also liked being closer to the entrance/exit on Northwoods and wanted to find a relatively flat lot on a quiet street...ideally close to a trail and preserved open space and not far from the Trout Creek Rec Center. Truly too much to ask, we thought...until we found our dream home. We had searched patiently for perhaps a year when we came across Swede Dreams. Once we saw it in August 2013, we knew it represented everything we were looking for in our Tahoe dream home and decided to take the leap. It's been an incredible journey outfitting and caring for a large, custom-built log home...but we already consider it part of the family and something our kids (and friends, guests and family) will cherish for decades to come. We love the idea of sharing this amazing place with others who appreciate the outdoors and want to create special memories with their own kids or families.
What makes this House unique
When we found Swede Dreams, we thought it was the perfect house in the perfect location. When we first walked inside, we were struck by the scale of the construction and thoughtfulness of its layout. The house seems large enough to gracefully accommodate many people without feeling so large that anyone can get lost or secluded in far-off rooms. And with different rooms set away from each other, it's easy to have Frozen playing in one room while parents enjoy a quiet fireside conversation in another, or sit in the back deck hot tub while being able to keep an eye on kids inside. We also love the ease with which we can head with our kids down the stairs from our back porch and immediately be in the thick of nature...both in our back yard (with its natural spring) and on the Nature Loop Trail which winds down to a beaver pond about 100 yards to the south. We were lucky enough to find and purchase Swede Dreams in 2013 and hope to share this amazing property with many others in the years to come!

Our family enjoyed the six days spent at Swede Dreams this past Christmas. The home was family friendly, clean, organized and conveniently located. The homeowner Darius was very personable, easy to communicate with from beginning to end, He went above and beyond by having the home holiday & weather ready for us. The audio & media system's were a little more complicated for the senior guests to operate, as they were more modern/technical than expected & used to.
Great deck with wooded view. Owners great to deal with. Super spot near truckee. This house can handle big crew.
Stay at Swede Dreams
Our families week at Swede Dreams was great. The area had plenty of activities for all ages. The home met our families needs and the setting was relaxing. We would stay there again.
Wonderful Company Retreat at Swede Deams
Our small company had an amazing 3 day weekend here for our annual ski trip. We were able to sleep and entertain 18 comfortably with minimal effort. The hot tub, headed floors, and heated driveway were an extra nice touch on an already impressive and comfortable home. During our 3 day stay it snowed over 2.5ft, if it wasn't for the heated driveway and great neighborhood plow service we never would have made it to the mountain. I cannot stress enough the value of this heated driveway in the winter.
Darius was an amazing host. He was easy to communicate with and provided detailed instructions for the house and amenities. Darius was also extremely generous and flexible when were almost snowed into due to a big storm. He even went as far as to track the weather and recommend the best times to hit the road.
I would recommend this spot for any large group of individuals or families looking to experience Tahoe during any season.
Best Ski Trip with Swede Dreams
The home was a real treasure! I organized a family reunion ski trip for MLK weekend. Everyone came away feeling that it was one of the best vacations we've ever had, and the Swede Dreams lodge helped make it so.
Darius kept us informed of the situation prior to our stay so that we were prepared and knew what to expect. The extra communication was so helpful.
Tahoe experience the biggest snowstorm in its history. Roads were buried and the area lost power. We arrived on the last day of the storm and faced scary road conditions. Snow plowers couldn't keep up with the amount of snowfall. Some of us were driving in from San Francisco and others arrived at Reno airport. Three of our vehicles got stuck in the snow on the way to house even with tire chains. Luckily power was restored at the house. When we arrived the boiler was running and even the hot tub was back to its normal temperature. Getting in from the storm and walking into a warm home with heated floors felt like we've been saved. Haha.
What we loved about the home:
- It was really clean and the listing had accurate descriptions and photos.
- Heated floors throughout the ground floor.
- Spacious floor plan. Everyone had his/her space with the 6 bedrooms. There were no grumblings about waiting for an open bathroom.
- High end kitchen appliances and plenty of dinnerware and glassware for our large group.
- Wine fridge
- Hot tub
- Heated driveway
- Snow plowers came to shovel snow from the front entry and decks.
- Sleds -- the kids (and grownups) stayed home from the slopes one day just to play in the snow covered backyard.
- Family friendly. There were plenty of toys, books, and playpens for small children. I really liked the wooden stools in every bathroom. It seems like such a small, random thing to mention but it was so helpful since we had 4 young kids who need help reaching bathroom sinks. And the stools had such cute designs too.
- Natural decor, even the artwork was lovely. Lots of hooks for snow clothes and a glove stand.
- Close to Sugarbowl, Squaw and Alpine Meadows.
- Darius was a great host. Great customer service through communication (texts, emails, and orientation PDF were appreciated) and providing snow plowers, handyman.
Both skiers and non-skiers in the family loved it. It's a luxury lodge that manages to be family friendly. I would highly recommend it.
Three generations stayed here for a post Christmas vacation and it could not have been more perfect! The house is magical. So comfortable, enough space for everyone and great hang out spots for everyone to congregate. Darius was lovely to work with - it is obvious that they love their home and want guests to as well. This house is perfect for young children - we had 4 children aging from 3 months to 8 years and everyone had a ball. They have a crib, two pack n plays, bouncy seat, baby toys, big kid toys, sleds, etc. Well equipped house! Everyone loved the hot tub as well and walking the trails in the backyard in the snow was like something out of a dream. Can't wait to come back!
