Mahalo nui loa!
I am truly blessed to be not only a resident of the Big Island but to have the opportunity to manage such an incredible home for my dear friend. Helen, the owner, shares my compassion in ensuring our guests feel the true spirit of Aloha while staying at the Old Sugar Mill Plantation. So that our incoming guests know, in Hawai'i, we like to hug a lot! So if you reach out to shake a hand here, don't be surprised if they give you a hug in return. While you are here, you are family! It's the Hawaiian way of life.
Steve and Julie Cox purchased this house in 2013
We felt as though this home was all about spending quality time with family and friends. Walking the surrounding 26 acres brings on such a feeling of tranquility and amazes one at the beauties Hawai'i has to offer. While on the island, we love to spend time on the front lanai 'talking story' about Hawai'i, good times and our journeys to come.
There are few large homes like this Hawaii. It makes for the perfect family, corporate or event location.. You can prepare your own delicious meals in the spacious and modern kitchen as well as tour the acreage and pick your own fresh fruits straight from our orchards.
Copied from guest email - I am so happy with my decision to rent the Old Sugar Mill Plantation. I am an activities coordinator at an International Language school in Waikiki, and this is the first trip I have planned to the BI. In total our group was 22 people and the house was absolutely perfect! I could not have asked for a better location or a more beautiful house. The bedrooms are all so beautiful, the house clean, the 26 acres of land AMAZING! Unfortunately we were so busy we didn't have a whole lot of time to enjoy all of the property, but the waterfall is definitely a bonus. Most times I rent hotel rooms for our groups, but this house was a hit with the students. Everyone enjoyed cooking dinner together in the beautiful kitchen and getting to relax in the peaceful atmosphere. I could go on and on about this place, but ultimately it was the ideal place to bring a group as large as mine. Steve thank you for making us feel at home and being so helpful throughout the whole process! Mahalo! And I am sure you will be seeing us again!
The pictures don't do this house justice! We had a few days although we spent very little time at the house due to our busy schd. the time we did spend there was absolutly fantastic! I wouldn't mind booking this home again in the future and i'll be sure to let people know how lovely this home was!!!
very clean home
location was perfect and the view was amazing!
the kitchen was nice also, i do believe taller people may have previously owned this home so the skins, stoves, cabinets were a little higher than normal but a stoll would help :)
Our family of ten (ages 1 - 65) had the most amazing experience staying at the Old Sugar Mill Plantation. The rooms are large, clean, comfortable and have beautiful views. Steve was amazingly helpful and always responded to my texts incredibly fast. As noted by other travelers, the actual rooms and property are even more wonderful than the photos show. We loved sitting outside listening to the ocean waves and nearby waterfall. The location of the property is great too. Far enough to be out of the way and not 'touristy' but a short drive will take you to Hilo for shopping and some great sights. If we're lucky enough to visit the Big Island again, I can't imagine staying anywhere else but here. This is the perfect property for any large family or group. My only regret is that I can't give it more than five stars.
We had a group of 16, including 7 adults and 9 kids (age 7-16), stay at the Sugar Mill for 5 nights. The location is great, far enough from Hilo to be out of the way yet close enough for shopping etc... Steve met us when we arrived and showed us around a bit, he was friendly, professional and extremely responsive to questions via text. The house and property far exceeded our already high expectations based on previous reviews. The home is roomy, clean and had plenty of room for our large group while the property was great for the kids to explore and burn energy. As others have posted, the pictures do not do this place justice, the rooms are larger than they appear with most having good views and private sitting areas. It was an awesome property for our base camp on the Big Island and I would highly recommend to anyone planning a vacation for a larger group.
Our family of 12 people had a wonderful time staying at the Old Sugar Mill Plantation! The house and property is simply incredible and the photos don't do it justice. It was very roomy, had wonderful views, and Steve was great to work with and extremely helpful! As a traveler who often uses HomeAway when traveling, I can tell you that you won't be disappointed with this property! Bedrooms are huge...shared space (living rooms, dining room, porches, etc) were very spacious. The kitchen itself will blow you away. It served as a great home-base as we ventured out each day to sightsee the Big Island. The setting is directly in the middle of working farms...a true cultural experience. If we visit the Big Island again, I would definitely stay at the Old Sugar Mill Plantation again!!
The Old Sugar Mill Plantation home was the perfect intimate wedding venue! From the moment we met with Steve Cox, we were in complete awe of the 8 bedroom, 8 bath home as well as the 26 acres of lush land. Each room had at least a king size bed and a full bath and were decorated differently. The property was filled with beautiful foliage and fruit. While we were unable to have our 60 guest wedding on the bridge overlooking the stream due to rain, we were able to take our wedding photos there once the weather cleared. We were also able to have our ceremony and reception on the property, and our closest friends and family were able to take advantage of the amazing house accommodations with us for 3 nights. We will DEFINITELY be staying here again for future family/friend gatherings. The biggest ALOHA & MAHALO to Steve for allowing us to celebrate the most important weekend of our new life together at an AMAZING home!
We had a wonderful time. House is very clean and beautiful. All rooms are very spacious. Steve was a very nice man...by the way, Papalina took home the 1st Place Trophy, Steve! Mahalo.
Being Hawai'i, the list of things to do and places to visit are nearly endless:
Picturesque Waipio Rim Valley is a short 45 minute drive up the scenic Hamakua Coast.
Akaka Falls State Park with its towering 422 waterfall is only 15 minutes away.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers great hiking and sightseeing. It is about an hour away and offers a full day or more of journeys.
Nani Mau Gardens is on the edge of Hilo and offers 22 acres of beautiful gardens to tour.
Waimea, the Hawaiian Cowboy town, is a must see during your stay. It is an hour away and sits at 2700 feet where the weather is a little cooler. Watch a rodeo here for great family fun.
The home itself sits on the edge of the quaint, seaside town Pepeekeo. Being only 15 minutes from Hilo, it offers guests the opportunity to relax in a quiet, relaxing home near the ocean yet still be close to great shopping, dining and sightseeing.
