A perfect house for surf and family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We spent more than two months in Casa Sunzal in El Salvador with our daughters who are 5 and 1 year old. The house is fantastic for a family and has all the amenities that we needed to have a great vacation for the whole family. The house even has a swing for the kids.

The location is very good in a quiet, safe and secure area. Yet is very close to all the action in El Tunco. We found a lot of very nice restaurants, both cheap and more pricy, very close to the house.

Just outside the house there is a fantastic beach which we had almost to ourselves. When there were large waves kids could still swim in the clean and calm river.

The local staff, Chepe, Marta and their family were absolutely amazing and helped us with everything we needed. The pool in the house had always crystal clear water, the house was clean and cozy. Chepe and Marta know everyone and everything around Sunzal and helped us with small and big things during our stay. They allowed us to relax and feel safe in El Salvador. Their daughters were also babysitters when we wanted to surf or do yoga.

There are always waves in Sunzal and the waves are absolutely world class. It is the perfect place to learn how to surf and good instructors to help you get started. Our five year old daughter could also begin to learn how to surf.

Myrna was always available by phone or internet to answer all our questions promptly.

We loved Casa Sunzal and will return as soon as we get the opportunity. We really recommend the house to families with children who are looking for an experience beyond the ordinary.

Huge house, clean pool, super-friendly staff, great location

  • 5 of 5

This is a great, wide-open house with a fabulous yard and pool. It was perfect for our family of four (children ages 7 and 11). The gate opens onto a nice river for swimming that flows straight into the ocean. When we were there in October, the beach was rocky with lots of trash (like baseball to basketball size rocks and the river flooded trash down from the towns above), but the locals all assured us that in the summer months (May-Aug), the beach is beautiful black sand.

The property is a little tricky to find the first time, but just be shameless and ask for Chepe and say the house-number and you'll get pointed in the right direction. It is down a 200 m dirt road with a gate, so zero traffic and safe. It is about a 15 minute walk to El Tunco along the beach (more if it's rocky and less if it's sandy). You can be at the main road in 2-3 minutes and there is a small grocery store and a lovely pupusa stand - they make tortillas until 5:00 pm - 16 thick tortillas for a dollar - then they switch to a delicious pupusa stand - I think they were 3 for a dollar.

The house has a very large common space downstairs with two good-size, air conditioned bedrooms. There is a medium-size TV room upstairs with a third bedroom and bathroom with air conditioning. Outside, there is a huge, raised patio with a view of the ocean and many hammocks. There is a foosball table and a ping pong table. Of course, there is a swimming pool (the pool is deep: probably between 4 and 5 feet throughout except for a small seating area on one end). The yard is large and full of coconut trees. Oh the coconuts! The caretaker, Chepe, will prepare you as many coconuts as you can drink (and eat). We gave him a tip on our second day and another big tip when we left - as a family of four we ate 50-coconuts in a week - not kidding.

Chepe came to clean the pool every day and two ladies came to clean the house twice during the week while we were there. They asked when convenient times would be for us and they did a great job (even washed some dishes). We had keys to everything, so with a rental car, it was very easy to come and go as we pleased.

The power went out for about 45 minutes on our first day (during the day), but other than that, everything in the house functioned perfectly. Thanks for a great family vacation!

Bad experience

  • 1 of 5

I hate to leave a bad review, but from the start this was not was we thought. Got to the location saw a older lady by the front door, she said they will bring us the key, a little boy showed up with it, he didn't even know which one was the right house. Tried one of the keys and got in. Paid for water and cool coconuts in the refrigerator, water ok no coconuts until days later when my husband asked for them. One of the bathrooms not flushing, did cleaning people not flush when cleaning? Shower with not enough water pressure, only one of the three could be used, and it was pointing towards the wall ,so it was hard to take a shower anyways, ran out of water on the second morning. Had a birthday party on Saturday and no water from Saturday 5:00 pm until Saturday morning when I finally contacted the owner. I was told that it was because we had more than 10 people and everyone was taking a shower, not true, almost everyone didn't take a shower and those who did, took showers Salvadoran style ( get wet, turn water off, put soap on, turn water back on and rinse) Had to carry water from the pool to flush toilets, was told that it was dangerous to the septic tank, had no choice, had no water for over 14 hrs. . Every day we ran out water, Don chepe was kind enough to show my husband how to reset the switch, but even after they changed a part we ran out of water every day. The day that we had to check out it was a struggle to take showers with the water going off and on. We ran out of gas while cooking breakfast, 2 empty tanks in the utility room, had to wait for Don Chepe to bring a full tank. It rained so bad that the pool got covered with water, it was what we call a natural disaster, but the roof leaked so bad we had to put pots and pans everywhere for two nights. The cleaning people cleaned around the pots and pans instead of cleaning then. The air conditioner in our room leaked for two nights, we only used it at night, it leaked for three days, our room was full of water. Were told that crossing a 10 to 12 inches creek would get us to the beach, didn't mention that the creek crossing can be up to 3 feet instead of 1 depending on the tide, and full of rocks. We can't deny that Don Chepe was nice, but this house is beautiful on the outside, but needs a lot of TLC. I usually leave the planning to my sister because is a travel agent, the one time I choose to get involved it resulted in a disaster.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry you felt so negatively about your experience at Casa Sunzal. The repair to the water tank was made within 5 hours of your complaint. It would have been made sooner, but required a replacement part. This is the first time I hear about issues with the shower and the toilets, which would be very easily addressed if you had mentioned it to the caretakers - that is why they are there. The shower heads are moveable - if it was pointing towards the wall, all you had to do is point it towards you. From your description, I am not sure what the issue was with flushing one of the toilets, but they worked perfectly for the next guests. The house is in a stunning part of the coast in El Salvador - that is the charm, but because of that also, despite our best human efforts, nature happens. The unusually heavy rains and flooding along the entire coast overwhelmed the canal system on the roof, and the retaining walls. All of the houses in this area experienced flooding. The pool and yard were drained and cleaned within 24 hours and I issued you a refund for the time it was unusable, along with your deposit, despite considerable damage to the equipment in house, including a broken fusbal table, broken plastic chairs, torn pool floaters, and a strong urine smell on the floor of both downstairs bathrooms which required considerable effort to abate. Perhaps a house in a more urban setting would have been more appropriate for your family.

Mesmerizing!

  • 5 of 5

We planned this vacation well in advance. Mirna has been with us each step of the way, always able and willing to answer each question no matter how silly.

Casa Sunzal was chosen because it looked amazing in pictures and it didn't disappoint. My sister in law (that shared accommodations with us) had very fond childhood memories of the place and the neighborhood from back in the 70's, 80's cause they use to vacation in a house nearby, closer to the road by the Sunzal Bridge.

Anyways, the time was full of morning and afternoon walks of very nice conversations with my family, they had very nice memories of the place and being there was a treat for them. I am Mexican and it was my first time being in such a beautiful coastal, peaceful side of El Salvador for so many days and I loved it!

Overall, El Salvador is a very small country but with so much diversity that you will love each stay there. On this trip we went to Ruta de Las Flores (Apaneca, Juayua, Ataco, Nahuizalco, Coatepeque Lake, Sonsonate, etc) for 5 days before arriving to Mirna's house. Once we arrived at Casa Sunzal, nobody wanted to leave the place! There is so much to do nearby! Planning for a day trip was so easy, because reaching San Salvador or other sides of the country is very easy. We even made a short trip to Perquin (closer to Honduras) while there.

The house faces the ocean and the estero , the 'yellow door' to exit to the estero and beach makes very charming pictures! Especially on Sunset, make sure to take a photo in there at the break of sunset one of the days of your stay if you go there.

My favorite part of the house was the second floor and it's views of the river ending in the ocean, both in the morning and during Sunset. Place is clean, peaceful, safe. All of Puerto La Libertad, Tunco, Tamanique, Sunzal, San Blas, Mahahual, etc. If you go there, just a few days won't be enough. Take a few weeks!

We went to el Tunco both by walking through the rocks (very safe, just take appropriate shoes) or by driving. El Tunco Beach is full of life, places to eat, and surfers!

Sunzal Beach (right next to the house) was the favorite for morning and sunset walks because is semi-private (not too many people go there). It makes it the perfect get-away! The ocean is at times very 'picado' (be careful) but at times very peaceful and safe, I guess that depends on the current and to Moon's mood (as my mom would say :D).

You owe it to yourself to try this house, won't disappoint.

A great place to relax

  • 4 of 5

Thank you Myrna for the wonderful place you shared with my family and friends, we had a great time by the pool with ice cold coconuts and great pupusas just outside the property, don Romeo and family were very kind to order some since we arrived quite late and he when out of his way to place the order before they closed.

Just a few cosmetic things to overlook; water sink faucet was leaking and needs to be fix to save water, it rain so hard the water was filtering thru the roof that we put some bowls (just like old time when I was growing up)😁򐐽򐘁. Tiles on the pool where coming off, also in the kichen sink. Overall the house is amazing and very enjoyable and inviting. Thank you again for the opportunity.

Denis.
