Come stay on the Rocking chair ranch, home of the the bridle suite and share in the Paniolo lifestyle. Walk downstairs in the morning with your coffee and say hello to the horses and Tequila the donkey. From your living room table you can look down on the cowboys all day in their daily activities of training, roping, cutting or dressage. .
You are only 5 miles from the best restaurants on the Big Island but you wake up every morning to green pastures and trees, not a house in sight! Recently built the Bridle Suite contains artwork and artifacts from Hawaii and it's cowboys. The ranch consist of 73 acres to hike, picnic and walk.
Were just 15 miles up from the white sand beaches of Maumai, Hapuna, Puako and Mauna Kea.
We were both born and raised in Hawaii. Brought up around horses and cattle and still actively rope and ride daily.Joan's dad was the manager of the Parker Ranch for many years and she has seen
Brian Anderson purchased this apartment in 2013
You come to Hawaii to enjoy nature and the peace and quiet it offers. We are up country where nights are cool and the beaches are just minutes away. The best of both worlds.
Hawaii's largest equestrian center.
We loved our stay at this very modest little room above the stables. It's not fancy but it was clean and cozy. No horses to ride there, but we found the Dahana stables only a couple of miles away and had a great hour and a half ride there. Very good restaurants are only five minutes away too.
The stable manager Terry was very accommodating and helpful and a great guy to visit with.
If you love being around horses, and centrally located on the north island, this a unique place to stay for a few nights.
It was a good experience to stay at brians cowboy styled room! It was all like in the description and the room and bathroom was very clean. In the kitchen was everything we needed to cook. We had good 3 nights at this special accomodation! Best greets from germany!
My wife and I live on the Big Island of Hawaii in Kau and take many "staycations" on this island as well as the neighboring islands. We were home maybe thirty minutes before we were discussing our next stay at the Rocking Chair Ranch, in fact we had already extended our initial stay by an extra day and in doing so Brian pretty much finished my sentence for me and within 10 seconds an agreement was reached. Brian and Joan were there to greet us and an Aloha/Howdy "there it is", and well, we were checked in. We wanted for nothing while we were there, the apartment is decorated in true "paniolo" spirit and overlooked the horses and highland sky from the picture windows in the bedroom and living area, and from the dinning area you have an up close and personal view of the stables and arena style riding and training area. There are several siting and hanging out areas including a fire pit that are also done in excellent cowboy style. As for the sites and activities in the area you will be just a short drive from the coast and some of the most beautiful beaches that Hawaii has to offer, horse back riding, the Camp Tarawa training camp memorial, Parker Ranch (famous for many reasons), Waipio Vally, the observatories on Mauna Kea, on and on. If I have not convinced you yet, let me tell you that I grew up traveling with my grandparents and later on my own and now with my own family, that with the fact the Marine Corps sent to to many places throughout my career, the only continent that I have not been to is Antarctica and I am pretty sure the list of countries I have not been to is smaller than the ones that I have visited, I have never written a review until now. Great location, affordable, and superior hospitality. I hope my comments help you in your planning. Aloha and E komo mai!
We truly enjoyed our stay.
Joan was very helpful. Thank you Joan.. Everything was there what we needed. The performance of the riders practicing their different skills was fascinating to watch. It is small but adeqvat.
I had the delight of staying at the Rocking Chair Ranch on my third trip to the Big Island, and found it the perfect spot to explore the northwest side of the island--easy access to the towns of Waimea and Hawi, to the beaches of South Kohala, and to the Pololu and Waipio Valleys. While I unfortunately didn't get the pleasure of meeting Brian, he was very communicative by text, and there were always folks around the ranch who were available if I needed anything; a welcome letter with clear tips for my stay and several contacts was also provided. This is a working ranch, and the suite is definitely in the middle of all the action--windows in the bedroom and the living area overlook roaming horses and the training arena--but is still quiet and private. Perfect spot for those looking for something more unique and off the beaten path.
The Bridle Suite is located above the covered arena where daily we train horses, and ride. Frequent activities are cutting, dressage and roping.
