Quiet and beautiful...

  • 5 of 5

First impression was shocked! For the low price it had a great view of the ocean, and away from the madness in town (didn't know it was Merrie Monarch). The property manager Eric was nice and very reponsive to our needs, mahalo! Our very first trip to Hawaii and this cozy place made it feel like home!!! Mahalo!!!!! Brett, Amanda, Christopher

Beautiful, clean, comfortable 1 bd/2 ba cottage near 'Akaka Falls

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our two-night stay in this very clean, bright, and airy vacation cottage. Everything was exactly as described in the VRBO listing. I found the owner and property manager to be friendly, easy to reach by phone, and easy to work with.

This cottage and another identical cottage are located on the grounds of the owner's own home; all share the same common driveway. This unit is the one in the far back corner of the lot. It overlooks the owner's green, beautifully maintained yard and is backed by a stand of trees. For the record, I was perfectly delighted by the ocean view in the distance (~a mile away, as the bird flies), framed by greenery. I consider myself to be a very light sleeper, but enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the frogs; by the middle of the night, it was completely quiet.

The location is about 15 minutes north of Hilo, in the tiny town of Honomu. We enjoyed the quick morning walk to Hilo Shark's Coffee Shop. The Honomu park was another minute away, with an enormous pair of banyan trees and a sweet little playground for our two-year-old. The location is great for those who want to "live like a local" in a quaint community on the wet side of the island. (Although others may prefer the sun and beaches of the Kona side, we prefer the lush greenery, waterfalls, and less-touristy Hilo side.) Nearby are the Botanical Gardens and 'Akaka Falls, both of which are gorgeous. In downtown Hilo, we picked up groceries at both Abundant Life natural food store and Island Naturals. We also got a tasty dinner to-go from Sambat's Fresh Thai restaurant. For reference, we also enjoyed a marvelous day at the Ahalanui Hot Pond and Lava Trees State Park in the Puna district, which was a little over an hour drive each way.

We loved the gorgeous bathrooms (plural!) and the comfortable bed. As promised, additional linens and blankets were provided, but we didn't need them. I agree with the previous reviewers who stated that the kitchenette is best for very simple meals, rather than full-blown cooking. (Mainly because the small bar sink is best-suited to simple clean-up tasks.) Outside on the lanai is a nice eating area (as shown in the photos in the listing). A gas grill is provided, as is a hot tub in a common area located near the other cottage, but we didn't end up using those.

I recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a clean, comfy place to stay in beautiful surroundings north of Hilo (if they're OK with a little kitchenette).

Quaint little town

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I booked this vacation rental for our 25th wedding anniversary. The house was immaculate and the perfect size for the two of us. Loved the shower for two!!

The owner, Scott, met us upon arrival and was available through out our stay to offer help as needed. He was very friendly and did his best to make us comfortable!

The rental house was in a quaint little town and very accessible to the island's tourist sites. However, being that we were hoping for more of a beach vacation, we made a lot of road trips back to the west side of the island to find sun, warmer temps and sandy beaches. During our 8 night stay, we found the location of the rental to be cloudy, rainy and cold for most of the stay. We should have researched better before booking, so this was our own fault!

This is a great place for travelers wanting a clean, comfortable place to stay while visiting the falls, volcano, gulches and botanical gardens. Stay in Kona if you want all day sun and beaches.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your anniversary getaway. We always like to give guests flowers and wine to those who have a special celebration and we are glad that you enjoyed them. Im not sure where your getting the cloudy and rainy. I was in Hawaii while you were there (as we met) and it was so sunny and gorgeous almost every day. It may say rain but it only rains for a bit then its sunny with blue skies and rainbows if we are lucky. Maybe you left several mornings early before the sun was out? Also in the house is a info book that has information on alot of beaches. There are 2 less than 5 minutes from the house, a 3rd less than 10 minutes from the house and several more just in Hilo about 15 minutes that are awesome beaches with gorgeous black sand and turtles to snorkel with as a bonus. Im so sorry that you didnt take advantage of the opportunity while in Hawaii and drove so far when you really didnt need too. Hapuna Beach which is world famous is only an hour away and a pleasant drive (the drive alone is worth the cost of admission past all the huge mountains and waterfalls along the side of the road) and I always recommend everyone to at least go there for at least an afternoon. So glad you enjoyed Hawaii and we would love to have you as a return guest.

Felt like a resident, great value.

  • 5 of 5

No more hotels for me. This new, comfortable house was spacious & immaculate. It had everything we could think of. The hot tub was genuinely hot! At touristy hotels they are usually warm tubs. The sheets were so smooth. Roomy bathrooms, 2 of them! Nothing to resent my spouse about! I do not cook on vacation, just reheat leftovers from restaurants & have some simple snacks. I mention this because the sink in the kitchenette was adequate for this purpose, but not for cleanups of a larger kind. I will definitely stay again- love this lush side of the island, so close to Volcanoes.

Exaggerated description by owner

  • 3 of 5

Owner's description is exaggerated when describing several things about the property. We unfortunately cannot share a wonderful experience, though I don't want to discourage future renters. The 'ocean view' is mentioned more than once as an important feature of this rental and we found the description of 'floor to ceiling' ocean views to be very inaccurate. We had already stayed in a B & B elsewhere that truly offered floor to ceiling ocean views, so the little glimpse of the ocean we got here was the size of a postage stamp by comparison. What you really look out to see is a nice, well kept yard with lots of greenery, which is fine and should be the description of the view instead, as you see a small bit of water far off in the distance and that isn't the initial impact for the view.

In the third paragraph, reference to the Wood Shop Grill for lunch and dinner mislead us, as it's closed for major repairs; we were very disappointed that once we located the property during a rainstorm that included a 3.5 hour power outage, the Grill was not available as stated and we had to drive in a storm back to Hilo after a very tiring day of touring. The decor is clean and nice, but the 'high quality bed linens' are not high quality...they are average. The spa robes were a nice touch. The bathrooms are very nice, but there wasn't even a box of tissues. There was nothing private about the hot tub, which was located at the side of another house on the property. Maybe the poles usually have curtains (?) but there was nothing there to close off for privacy. Until we rented, we were not aware our house was at the back of another property...and kept feeling that the description was perhaps for that other house in front...though we couldn't figure out all the reference to great ocean views from that one, either. The people staying there approached us for help when we first arrived due to the power outage. We called the property manager we had read in other reviews would be available, but he was in Puna and could not help in any way. We bought candles and flashlights in Hilo where we had to go for dinner, as the only flashlight we could find was low on batteries and would never have lasted to help us through the darkness that lasted for several hours. Other people have described the kitchen, but it was fine for our needs.

In general, the place is nice, provides a decent value for the money, but don't expect ocean views or readily available help if needed.

Owner's Response: I am writing this response to address your outrageous account of the events that occurred during your stay. Let me start with the ocean view. It's very nice and many guests have said so in their reviews. I personally as the owner responded to your phone call and numerous emails on every issue you had with property, even after your stay. I apologized for the view not being as open as it should have been and did speak to the gardener to trim anything blocking or impending the ocean views. You go on to say the grill was unusable. What you should have said that was after you broke the handle on the propane the grill could not be turned on. Eric the property manager promptly switched out the propane tank for you so it worked. There are several grills on the property all for your use. It even says so in the information when you check in. Regarding the power outage the facts are you arrived at dark close to 7pm. The power was out then. Eric the property manager did take your calls and inquired with the electric company who told him they were working on the power and it would be on soon. He told you that and by the time you went to Hilo to eat dinner and get back the power was on. It wasn't several hours more like less than 2 hours. My understanding is you were gone eating dinner close to 3 or 4 hours. Also I personally was returned from Hawaii in late December and restraunts were open all but one who is remodeling. I can't be responsible for small businesses hours or their decisions to stay open late or not. The facts are they open for business as early as 6 am and most close by 6pm at night. Previous reviews also share this so to expect a small community to have the hours you may be accustomed to in a large city isn't reasonable. Should you have not wanted to drive to Hilo in the dark you should have planned to arrive before dark. Power outage or not would not have changed the scenario. Complaints on the bed linens. Really? Macy's us good enough for most guests and we haven't had complaints just the opposite in fact. The hot tub is in a common area for use by all guests. I'm sorry you didn't feel comfortable . We are in the process of constructing new bamboo privacy fencing to resolve this matter. Your house is located ideally by the gardens and is not near the other rental which provides privacy. Many honeymooners love this location and anyone wanting privacy. Lastly Eric just received a nice review a few weeks ago saying how helpful and wonderful he is...
