Thank you very much for your hospitality once more. We had great days in this beautiful cottage once again and hope to be back for the third time.
We stayed at Pink Gate Cottage for two weeks over Christmas and New Year 2009/10.
Central heating supported by a fireplace and a wood burning stove, Sky for the cold evenings, views of the Atlantic, local provisions available and it was well appointed, well furnished, clean, well maintained and wonderfully quiet. A good folder of clear instructions too.
Put it another way, we were struggling to think of what the owners could have done better with the property.
One of the owners (Tim) came to say hello and make sure all was OK, and that was the last we saw of them for two weeks although he was on call if we needed.
We hiked a lot, weather permitting, and the cottage is well placed for Valentia sans car (obviously), and it's a short drive to Caherciveen for the bigger hills or south to mountain passes and more coast.
Most of rural Ireland was closed at this time of year of course, but the candle shop was still working (now he /does/ need to work on his frontage), and the shops in Port Maghee were open for provisions and so forth.
In Caherciveen QC's was a great find for a restaurant, and Helen's Coffee House was a welcome retreat on cold lunchtimes. They were the best of the set we tried during our stay.
If you're after a place to stay on the West coast, Pink Gate cottage is thoroughly recommended.
It's difficult to add anything to the superlative reviews already written without merely restating how much we enjoyed our stay. We have used HomeAway / VRBO in the US, Canada, and Europe for several years, and can rate this as one of the finest, without reservation. If rural Kerry coast is what you're looking for, you can not do better.
Oh how we loved this cottage. So authentic, retaining original details, but beautifully updated and decorated. Well furnished. Two fireplaces to keep you cozy. Beautiful sunroom. Tim, the host, is very responsive. And Valentia Island offering so many sights. Easy to explore the Ring of Kerry. Hope to return soon.
This property and the location are both stunning. With fantastic facilities and glorious views over the Atlantic to the Blasket Islands, the cottage is the perfect base for a holiday to remember.
The owners are friendly and helpful and ensure that the cottage is maintained to the highest standard.
This property caters for most holiday makers and the garden is a beautiful peaceful haven to enjoy the surrounding countryside.
Valentia Island has much to offer and County Kerry will not disappoint.
Pink Gate Cottage far exceeded expectations. It is even prettier, charming, & more scenic than it appeared in pictures. Immaculate, comfortable, cozy, extremely well furnished. We spent a week here and never ran out of things to do. Lots of great walking in the area, and the cottage is just a short drive (or walk) from the friendly village of Portmagee. Also very close to Knightstown, with the larger town of Caherciveen just a bit farther away.
The cottage is well situated for driving the Ring of Kerry or visiting the blue-flag beach at Ballinskelligs. The more adventurous should definitely take the boat ride and walk to the top of Skellig Michael. Good restaurants in the area include Moorings, Skelligs Mists, the Fuschia Restaurant, & the Boston Bar.
Tim and Doris are perfect hosts who see to it that their guests enjoy the most comfortable stay possible. This cottage would be great for couples, families with young kids, families with older kids - virtually anyone.
My wife , my 2 year old son and I stayed for a week, the cottage was 1st class, there was a really traditional feel coupled with all the mod cons you'd except from a 4* property, I really liked the attention to detail(Books ,Candels, Artwork, Real Fires etc) and there was loads of room for the little guy to run around in the gardens and a gate to keep him safe and secure!
The Island is a real gem, loads of walks and stunning scenery, for eating we really liked the Light House Cafe ( great sandpit and play area) and for evening dining we went to the Moorings in Port Magee an excellent spot!!
We have stayed in other places where we felt that the owners where over powering but after Tim gave us a quick run through , he left us to it , which was perfect!
I'd recommend this cottage and will certainly return to it in the future,
Pink Gate Cottage is located in a stunning part of the island. The island is connected to the main land with a road bridge and in the summer also with a ferry service that runs all day. The cottage offers fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the 'Blasket Islands' and ‘Dingle Bay'. The proximity to the Gulf Stream gives it a subtropical climate creating a special fauna and flora making it the ideal location for walking in a very special and unique environment. St. Brendan's Well, a natural spring with reputed healing powers, is only a short walk from the cottage. Portmagee, a small fishing village is 2kms from 'pink gate cottage' and offers a variety of activities - angling, water sports, and boat excursions to the 'Skellig Rock' as well as some very good fish restaurants. Whale watching trips are also available.
