Two Bedroom Villa Plus Optional 2 Bdrm Cabina, &/or 1 Bdrm Jungle Pad

Bedrooms 5
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Two Bdrm Main Casa, 2 Brdm Cabina, 1 Bdrm Jungle Pad, 5 Bdrms, 4 Baths, Slps 10

On the ocean side of the two bedroom main villa a beautiful infinity pool overlooks a butterfly garden, the valley and ocean below. There is a rancho with hammock and jungle and ocean views. Also, a back patio offers a shaded area for afternoon relaxing and bird watching. The self contained cabina offers two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. An outdoor kitchen (cabina) offers amazing ocean views and sits at the edge of the jungle. One hundred and ninety concrete steps lead to a river which drops off into a 200' waterfall. Fresh water shrimp can be caught here -- if you're quick with a net. The steps are through the jungle with passion flowers, buttress trees, and many of Costa Ricas coloured frogs along the way. Both dwellings are A/C equipped although the breeze at this elevation means the A/C is rarely required. This is a new property built in 2012 and beautifully landscaped with flowering shrubs and fruit trees. The Jungle Pad, built in 2014, adds another bedroom with two twin beds and its own bathroom, bringing sleeping capacity for the property to 10. It is truly an amazing property.

About Dorothy and Len MacDonald

We are retired Canadians, residents in the Kawartha Lakes area of Southern Ontario. We have always loved travelling and spending time with our four grown children and ten grandchildren. Recently three great-grandchildren have been added to the family. I have always loved orchids and owning this property allows me to indulge in this passion.

Dorothy and Len MacDonald purchased this villa in 2012

Why Dorothy and Len MacDonald chose Puntarenas

After visiting many areas of Costa Rica over a period of 12 years we finally found our property in the Cascada Sandalo Estates development near the village of Tres Rios. We built and developed our home and property during 2012 and totally love it. The property boasts a mature mango tree and a spring fed river at the bottom of a ravine in the jungle that can be reached by 196 concrete steps. The river ends in a 200 foot waterfall.

A unique property.

What makes this villa unique

The cooling breezes at the 1300 ft elevation of our home. The many waterfalls and rivers in the area. It is so cool to look down on the mists rising from the rivers in the valley below us. The toucans and aracaris visit - usually twice daily -- and pizotes and monkeys often. Occasionally a sloth. We have also seen macaws, laughing falcons, and hawks from our patio. It is so peaceful!

The property was beautiful and even nicer than we expected. Clean and well appointed.

We had an incredible experience for our first time in Costa Rica. Loved the property. It was perfect for ourselves and our 4 adult children. We love to cook and the kitchen served us well. Lots of fresh and accessible food choices. Lots of space to spread out and enjoy this beautiful setting. Awesome outdoor eating area. We had to call 'dibs' on turns in the serene hammock area. Got up every morning and had coffee in the bird watching corner. Enjoyed sunsets by the pool. Packed very light so used the washer. Definitely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Dorothy and Len were incredibly accommodating. We did so much, but need to come back to experience all we didn't have time for as well. Would suggest bring some local currency as some settings had trouble making change for American and the exchange rate varied. Not an issue, but something to consider. Drive from San Jose was on a beautiful highway. Other roads are very twisty and turny and as I said 4 wheel drive is essential.

All in all wouldn't change anything. Lovely people, lovely setting, lovely weather and a million things to do. Thanks for sharing your piece of heaven Dorothy and Len.

Owner's Response: Kim, it was a joy to host you and your family. Thank you for leaving the property so clean and towels all washed and folded. So thoughtful. Len and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with you and hope to see you in the future -- in either Costa Rica or Canada.

Paradise Found

If you are looking for a great place to stay that offers peace and tranquility, this is the spot.

Dorothy and Len have made this "the" place to go. Pictures don't do the fabulous ocean view justice. The sunsets are spectacular. The main house, where we stayed, is very comfortable and felt like home.

As a previous reviewer has mentioned, it is a good 20 minutes on a dirt road from the highway. The Ojochal restaurants like Citrus and Exotica are about 30 minutes away. We were happy to do our grocery shopping in Palmar Norte (about 40 mins away) and hibernating for a few days.

We would highly recommend Len and Dorothy's home.

Gorgeous Remote Spot With Ocean View!

Dorothy and Len are extremely helpful and have an amazing property. If you are looking to get far away from noise and people this is for you! The main house is clean, spacious and has everything you need. Travel with friends or relatives and there are extra beds in the cottages above the main house. Charming outdoor eating areas, a hammock, pool and deck with great sunset views. Birds including toucans all around the property with flowers galore and a variety of fruiting trees, and a nice walk down to the river in the forest.

Within an hour you can reach tours to Corcovado National Park, a huge rainforest; other more frequented national parks like Manuel Antonio, as well as many waterfalls, and a variety of beaches including boat tours to Cano Island. They can connect you with a great person to arrange tours for you.

There are small stores at the main road at the bottom of the mountain and several larger supermarkets within a 30 min drive.

You MUST have a 4WD to reach the house. And it's best to arrive before dark (we did not). Dorothy and Len kindly met us to lead us up, and patiently waited nearly two hours for us to get there. It's a steep climb on a dirt road, with bumps and turns. On average it took us about 20min to get from the main road to the house and similar time to get back down.

We loved the house and the location and would absolutely return

Paradise Found!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa de Orquidea for a week in March. From the time we arrived we could tell it was a special place. We were greeted by the owners and given an excellent overview of the property before our stay. Their communication throughout the process was always very helpful and prompt. The short drive up the mountain to the villa (15-20 minutes) is all part of the adventure, and there are beautiful sights to see along the way. We made the drive down the mountain almost daily to the many nearby beaches, sites, and activities... except for the one day we opted to just relax and soak the day in at this beautiful home. I would highly recommend a decent 4x4 or AWD vehicle for the drive up the mountainside, but overall the drive was completely manageable and fun. The road was in great shape. As for the property and villa, I would not hesitate to use the word paradise! The owners have put obvious and detailed attention towards assuring the home really takes advantage of the surrounding environment. It's extremely well-appointed, and it was nice to have all of the amenities to accommodate our family. The view overlooking the Pacific is spectacular, the outdoor furniture and dining area is superb, and the Rancho is a great little escape for a nap in the hammock! The focal point (especially for the kids) was the pool. It's a wonderful thing to watch a Costa Rica sunset from the edge of this pool. We made it a highlight every evening! We even got close views of a thunder and lightning storm that put on a spectacular show over the nearby mountains and ocean, plus we did some great stargazing. The gardens are amazing (best bananas we've ever eaten) and seem to draw in a huge array of birds, butterflies, and wildlife. The numerous species of birds kept us entertained daily. The sounds of the rainforest really stand out here. We loved awaking to howler monkeys across the valley and even saw a small and unexpected group of white-face capuchins when heading down the steps to the nearby river. We would often just stop and listen to all of the life around us. It was pretty amazing! When it was time to depart, we had to peel ourselves away from this place. It's a beautiful area of Costa Rica and this property and the owners make it that much more amazing! Thanks for the memories!

Great Escape!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa de Orquidea for 8 days in February and had a fantastic time! The custom-built villa is clean, comfortable and well-maintained. Stunning flowers and fruit trees including banana and mango on the 10-acre property and available for eating if your timing is right! We enjoyed daily bananas picked right off the tree during our stay. There is a 200-foot waterfall on the property with 190 steps leading you to a view from the top. Exploring in the day we came across a Mexican porcupine resting in a tree by the river! A night walk treated us to seeing some frogs, shrimp and lizards. Every day we saw toucans, hummingbirds, parrots to name just a few of the birds frequenting the nearby trees and the famous blue morpho butterflies. We didn't see any monkeys but heard the howlers in the surrounding jungle.

A definite focal point of the property is the infinity pool. We cooled off and relaxed in the pool daily and watched breath-taking views of the sun setting over the ocean!

The main house has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with showers. Very comfortable beds and while there is air conditioning available we never needed it! Ceiling fans and a lovely mountain breeze maintained a perfect temperature. The kitchen is well equipped, even a blender for whipping up some pool-side drinks and a BBQ right on the patio too! We cooked some meals here and ate out at nearby restaurants a few nights. The best was the 4-hour fresh tuna at one of the owner’s favourite places! The villa is very secure, located in a guarded community with friendly and helpful neighbours, many of whom are Canadian doctors so we felt very safe! There are many possibilities for easy day trips. One of the neighbours guided us on a river trek to some secluded pools and a cascading waterfall (cascada in Spanish!). We went on an excursion through the mountains with stunning ocean views and a lunch stop in a local village. Another day we went to the village of Boruca where the local people make beautiful works of art including drums, carved masks and hand-woven tapestries. Other highlights include the sea caves at Ventanas beach and a wildlife rescue refuge where we got to see 3 baby sloths. A 4x4 vehicle is needed but the Dihatsu Terios we rented easily made it up the road which is well maintained unlike many other local roads. The 15 minute drive takes you away from the main highway and into the welcome coolness of the mountain air. We will definitely be coming back! Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Cathy and Jeff for your kind review of Casa de Orquidea. It pleases Len and I so much when others enjoy the magic of our home as much as we do. Hopefully, you will be able to return in the not too distant future.

Incredible Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Orquidea is a stunning place. The photos give you only a slice of how beautiful and well appointed it truly is - high in the mountains overlooking the ocean (just a few hundred feet below the clouds), spacious and welcoming, and surrounded by acres of terraced and beautifully landscaped property. It's just too bad the banannas weren't ripe enough to be picked while we were there!

We sat on the patio every evening to watched the sun set over the pacific while the kids played in the pool. Delighted in the toucans that stopped by on nearby trees morning and afternoon and finding the beautiful geckos who could be spotted high up the outside walls each evening. Cooked delicious dinners on the BBQ and gorgeous gas stove. Explored the area's many pristine beaches, enjoyed local restaurants, good local shopping in Uvita, and activities like whale-watching and zip-lining.

Hope to be back! Thank you Len and Dorothy, and a big thank you to Michael for hosting us while you were away - his food recommendations were perfect!
