About Jan Stevens
I live in New York City and work at the United Nations where I am responsible for environmental programs for developing countries related to biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, forest protection and sustainable energy. The oceanfront cottage on Bowen Island listed here was passed down to me from my grandparents who bought the property in 1918 and my wife, Joan, and I bought the property next door on the water and built the first 'Platinum' green house on the island in 2009. So we have both a modern house and a vintage cottage to make available here. Since my work and travels prevent me from spending as much time on Bowen as I would like, I am listing them on (website hidden) to make them available to others. Jan Stevens is the manager for both these properties while I am away from Bowen and I will pass on requests for rentals to Jan.
Jan Stevens purchased this Cabin in 1918
Why Jan Stevens chose Bowen Island
My grandfather, Samuel Mack Eastman, discovered this spot on Bowen Island in 1918 when he came to recuperate from an injury sustained in World War I while serving in Canada’s army. He liked it so much that he bought this acre of oceanfront property for $300 that year! Mack and his wife Antonia built a cabin here and my mother, Isabelle, spent her early summers here from the 1920s on, and all of the summers of her later years. This was my mother’s favorite spot on earth. The ‘new’ cabin was built around 1950 and it continues to serve us well. I have been coming to this place on Bowen since the age of two, and this is where I found my appreciation of nature, ocean swimming and interest in international affairs and environmental issues. I was also inspired to build my career at the United Nations to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather who devoted himself to world peace in the League of Nations in the 1920s and 1930s. Subsequently, my wife, Joan, fell in love with this spot as deeply as my mother did, so we bought the acre next door to my grandparents property and built the first “Platinum” certified ‘green’ house on Bowen, which was finished in 2009. It is our other listing, the Eastman Waterfront Retreat. In a few years this property will have been in my family for 100 years so our connection to this place is strong. Incidentally, as early notables in Bowen history, Mack and Antonia Eastman are referenced in both books on the history of Bowen Island and even in the historical section of the 2012 Bowen phone book!
What makes this Cabin unique
Our Historical Waterfront Cedar cottage is only 9 minutes from Snug Cove by car or a 45 minute walk. It is easily accessible with a 2WD vehicle. For guests that are looking for privacy this property is secluded, surrounded by trees and on the water's edge. A peaceful retreat to the past.......a wonderful place to reboot your soul.

Charming cottage with stunning views
My wife and I have stayed at several cottages in various places in BC, and this is by far the most amazing place we have ever stayed at! The cottage is very clean, convenient and has everything you need for a wonderful stay. Aside from being very comfortable, it also radiates of history and charm, with beautiful artwork by the original owners who lived here 100 years ago. Even more reason to stay here is the location and the most beautiful views you will ever see in your life! Words and even pictures can never do it justice, the views simply have to be seen in person to believe. If you stay here you will have the most relaxing experience of your life, alone with nature and with complete privacy to enjoy the peace and quiet and most stunning scenary one can ever dream of.
We had a lovely time staying in this cabin right right on the water. Very serene, private and relaxing.
Lovely well cared for little rustic cabin with all the comforts you need.
This beautiful simple cabin fit my needs perfectly. The host was kind and responsive, and everything was there that I needed. The view is stunning (as you can see from the photos) and there was one softer single bed I could sleep on (the other beds are very firm). It was a perfect fit for quiet solo time. The only improvement I could suggest would be to say on the site that google maps doesn't take you to the address, and then to ensure the outside motion sensor light on the cabin works. I arrived at night and initially had a hard time bringing my things in, in the pitch black. Once inside it was fine! It's quite expensive but was exactly what I needed.
Sweet cozy classic cottage with a view
We love this little cottage. It's small cut comfortable, and the big windows and view make feel bigger. We watched seals play out front, ferries slide back and forth, various birds cavort, and low clouds move among the high ridges across the water. The cottage has not real "luxuries," but everything works well, and the place is well appointed/stocked. It's also very easy to get to from Vancouver (or WA state, if you plan around rush hour) but feels pretty far out there. Bowen Island has some nice trails, which are very well maintained and signed, so it's a pleasant place to explore. Being able to bring the dog here was a plus also.
sweet classic cottage
This is a pretty fine spot--easy and quick (but fun) to get to but feels quite a ways out there. The cottage is small but efficient and generally well-equipped. Not really any luxuries, but very comfy and big windows (and the view) make it feel spacious. Furnishings are cute, quaint, and cozy. Really a nice getaway spot. We also appreciated the fact that we were able to bring our dog, who had a grand time (and was a fun companion). It was fun to watch the ferries float by, the seals play off the rocks, and the fog drift among the high ridges across the bay/channel.
