About Jan Stevens

I live in New York City and work at the United Nations where I am responsible for environmental programs for developing countries related to biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, forest protection and sustainable energy.

The oceanfront cottage on Bowen Island listed here was passed down to me from my grandparents who bought the property in 1918 and my wife, Joan, and I bought the property next door on the water and built the first 'Platinum' green house on the island in 2009. So we have both a modern house and a vintage cottage to make available here.

Since my work and travels prevent me from spending as much time on Bowen as I would like, I am listing them on (website hidden) to make them available to others.

Jan Stevens is the manager for both these properties while I am away from Bowen and I will pass on requests for rentals to Jan.

Jan Stevens purchased this cabin in 1918

Why Jan Stevens chose British Columbia Gulf Islands

My grandfather, Samuel Mack Eastman, discovered this spot on Bowen Island in 1918 when he came to recuperate from an injury sustained in World War I while serving in Canada’s army. He liked it so much that he bought this acre of oceanfront property for $300 that year! Mack and his wife Antonia built a cabin here and my mother, Isabelle, spent her early summers here from the 1920s on, and all of the summers of her later years. This was my mother’s favorite spot on earth. The ‘new’ cabin was built around 1950 and it continues to serve us well.

I have been coming to this place on Bowen since the age of two, and this is where I found my appreciation of nature, ocean swimming and interest in international affairs and environmental issues. I was also inspired to build my career at the United Nations to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather who devoted himself to world peace in the League of Nations in the 1920s and 1930s.

Subsequently, my wife, Joan, fell in love with this spot as deeply as my mother did, so we bought the acre next door to my grandparents property and built the first “Platinum” certified ‘green’ house on Bowen, which was finished in 2009. It is our other listing, the Eastman Waterfront Retreat.

In a few years this property will have been in my family for 100 years so our connection to this place is strong. Incidentally, as early notables in Bowen history, Mack and Antonia Eastman are referenced in both books on the history of Bowen Island and even in the historical section of the 2012 Bowen phone book!

What makes this cabin unique

Our Historical Waterfront Cedar cottage is only 9 minutes from Snug Cove by car or a 45 minute walk. It is easily accessible with a 2WD vehicle. For guests that are looking for privacy this property is secluded, surrounded by trees and on the water's edge. A peaceful retreat to the past.......a wonderful place to reboot your soul.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed in the cottage to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The cottage was clean, dry and well maintained. The lovely smell of cedar scented the air. The double bed was very comfortable, we slept peacefully. Linens and towels were fresh. Living room furniture was comfortable. Kitchen was well equipped, we found everything we needed. Enjoyed the great ocean view with my breakfast from the kitchen table. Excellent deck and spectacular view. Sunsets are breathtaking with a glass of wine in hand. Cozy and inviting, we had a relaxing, romantic weekend. Owners family featured in history of Bowen Island, enjoyed reading material provided. Owner also provides printout with helpful information for cottage. We would highly recommend and look forward to our next visit.

The view is amazing, furnished with almost everything one could need tho' another easy chair would have been great. Kitchen is very useable . Details for the key retrieval and drop off were very good and easy to follow. Beds comfortable.

Stunning view of Hutt Island, Gambier, Keats and Sunshine Coast.

  • 4 of 5

Lovely little place with all the basics. Tidy, nice decor. Killer ocean view. The private rocky point and view from the deck was my favourite part about the place; not the best for swimming, but swimming is possible if you don't mind navigating the rocks (which I don't). Moreover, the property is about a 3 minute walk from an awesome public wharf that one can post up at or jump into the ocean. It's a little tight using the shower in the wet room/bathroom, but it gets the job done, and the openness of the deck and main room more than make up for it. A romantic spot with a unique vantage point from Bowen looking out into the Sound.

Idyllic cabin in the woods with stunning ocean views!

  • 5 of 5

The beautifully decorated, cedar scented and comfortable cabin has a wall of windows facing out to a remarkable panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding islands. We saw seals hanging out and several deer around the property including a curious buck who gave us a startle but continued eating grass undisturbed by us. The decor is a mix of old and new with hand painted furniture but new granite counter tops and deep sink. The patio juts out over a sloping cliff to the water where we sat with cozy blankets watching jaw dropping sunsets.

As mentioned in the arrival information, the sloping, gravel driveway is difficult to manoeuvre with out 4-wheel drive so it's important to heed this warning. That being said, the cabin is located at the very end of a long road without access to transit so a vehicle is necessary. The garbage and compost removal instructions were extremely detailed which wasn't difficult for us as Vancouverites, but is something to give a good read through.

We were on the island for a wedding so did not get to explore the island too much so would love to return in the fall to enjoy the changing leaves and explore some of the hikes.

Owner's Response: Thank you for being our guests, Jen. So love that you were treated to a visit by Bucky.....he runs the neighbourhood. A few of our guests have experienced whales in the channel out front too.......next time!!!. Yes, for sure, the Municipality does require trash separation and it can be a challenge for travelers that are required to do so in their home cities. Just so there is no confusion......the driveway does not require AWD or 4WD. Access is easy with a 2WD vehicle. Love to have you back another time when you can truly sit back and enjoy the natural setting of the Eastman Waterfront Cottage.

Owner's Response: Rachel, thank you for taking your time to share your Eastman Waterfront Cottage experience. So glad that you were able to take advantage of the Private swimming "beach" off of the rock slope out front of the cottage. Great advice to bring beach shoes, highly recommended. Love to have you return. Best, Jan and Charles.

Best idea ever! :D

  • 5 of 5

This was the best get away of my life. Everyone that I dealt with getting the rental was extremely friendly and helpful and the locals create a very laid back atmosphere. Plus its a very private and quiet location even though there are houses beside you. I'm already trying to book off time next year so that I can go again for a longer visit!

The cottage is situated right on the water and the views are incredible! I truly hope we can come back during the summer months to take advantage of this gorgeous location and jump into the water in our backyard!

The space is comfortable and big enough for a family of four. Thumbs up!!
