I own and operate Wicked Awesome Maine Vacation Rentals.
Besides Featherbed Island House, I currently own waterfront vacation rental cottages in Bucks Harbor, Maine (The Frisky Fish) and Phinney Cove, Nova Scotia (Saltbrook on the Bay).
I LOVE being a host for vacation rental cottages. I've owned vacation rentals since 2003 and love helping to make someone's vacation special, whether it be suggesting a special restaurant, fulfilling a special request, or just being reachable to answer questions. I try to make all of my rental locations full of special touches and personal treasures.
Machiasport is the ideal central location in downeast Maine. We've found that the Bar Harbor and the Acadia area are much too crowded especially in summer and fall, and southern Maine has sadly become suburbia. Machiasport is a idyllic retreat - the REAL Maine - the Maine with character - and it's perfectly located. The central location is perfect for day trips everywhere from the mid-coast to bold-coast without having to deal with the crowds. Featherbed Island House is very private, yet still minutes away from the local wine/cheese/craft beer store, natural food store and cafe, and other restaurants and shops.
Sadly we left the house last night so we
could be home by morning. I want to tell you
how much we really enjoyed our stay in your
magical house. We were sad to leave...all of us.
Everyone in our family had such a beautiful, relaxing
time. We will never forget our stay at the Featherbed Island House! Everything was perfect
and we felt like home there! Our dog, Katie,
loved it too...as there was so much more to sniff!
We are back to our reality now... but being there for
this past week re-energized us. We will never forget
the view, the sun, the breeze and all of nature that
was right before our eyes...the bald eagle almost every day, and yesterday was even closer that we
got a better picture of him!
Thank you for opening your house to us! You have
quite a special place there and we hope to visit again soon!
Wow. Just Wow. As you drive down the dirt driveway, you have no idea of the beauty that is just beyond the tree line. The road ends at at the point of land -- completely open views to the bay. Looking right down the bay, you can see the village, looking straight ahead, you see Featherbed Island. The lawn is dotted with apple and maple trees (probably quite a sight during foliage season).
The house itself is decorated straight out of a design magazine. No cookie-cutter furnishings here. (So much nicer than my own house - I hate to leave tomorrow). Besides the living area, there is a music room (my favorite room) and a tv room.
There are brand new higher-end kitchen appliances and I am even able to hunker down and do some holiday baking with a professional quality stand mixer and everything else I need to bake -- the pantry is fully stocked with anything anyone could need - cookie sheets, muffin tins, pie plates, etc. The first snowfall is outside and I'm watching the tide come in through the window listening to 78's on the vintage phonograph. I can't imagine a better last-minute get away.
It was a pleasure to spend the week here even in November into December although it is easy to picture days spent outside in warmer weather. The house was cozy and it was very peaceful watching the tide come and go and birds darting everywhere. What a great location! The kitchen was well appointed with newer appliances and most anything you need. I would definitely return here.
Spent a week at end of September at this home. Truly gorgeous views, lovely home and grounds. Steep down to water and very muddy, but we did manage to launch our kayaks from the house once. Kitchen well stocked, but we didn't realize we had access to a pantry off the kitchen until a few days into our stay as we thought the door was locked! Found the lobster pot there and enjoyed a couple of nice dinners at the house. Loved the fire pit looking out on the water on the chilly fall nights. Not a lot of options for dinner out, but we knew the location was remote. A nice day trip to Lubec and another overnight to Bar Harbor. Lovely stay! Very responsive owner - loved the farmers market - I placed an order before arriving, thanks to Maria. She also helped us find a terrific source for fresh lobster instead of the local grocery store. Very nice stay.
We couldn't have had a more relaxing vacation in this very comfortable, well decorated home. From the library to the TV room to the fully equipped kitchen and pantry, there was really something for every member of our family. The owners have thought of everything imaginable in stocking the house with everything needed to enjoy your stay. We loved the private location and the views are spectacular, including the daily sightings of the bald eagle and blue heron. Sitting outside at night around the fire pit was lots of fun as well as setting up our telescope for viewing of the night sky in this perfect location. We are also very thankful that this is a pet friendly home and are grateful we were able to bring along the four-legged member of our family, our dog Bella. She loved going for walks and exploring the property. By the end of the week, we found ourselves discussing what time of year we would like to come back the following year, so yes, it looks like we are hooked on this treasure of a vacation spot and it's not a question of whether we will be back, but when!
This home was an absolute pleasure for me and my family of five (plus small dog) to stay in. The home is clean, charming, and provides plenty of towels and linens. We loved having such a beautiful view of the water each day and often enjoyed our breakfast and coffee on the porch. We loved the ability to disconnect here, but there is a great WiFi connection if needed. Detailed guidance on places to visit and how to check out are also provided. The location is perfectly situated for traveling north into Canada or south of Machiasport to visit Maine's coast. There is also a grocery store, a number of small shops, and several restaurants within a short drive. Maria is one of the most attentive and responsive rental hosts we have had. If you are looking to visit Maine, this property should absolutely be at the top of your list!
Our week at the Yellow House was wonderful, start to finish. What a delight, after a two day drive, to arrive at a perfectly appointed house overlooking a serene estuary and picturesque island. We wanted for nothing the entire stay and had plenty of room for our entire family. While we did a bit of traveling in the area, our favorite times were at the house, enjoying the silence, watching the tides, trekking to the island, cooking in the well-stocked kitchen, stargazing, listening to the radio and playing games together. What a great place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with your family!
