Bru na Mara is a beautiful complex just outside Carna on the Wild Atlantic Way, that combines traditional design with modern comfort. The site overlooks a small harbour, and has spectacular views of the sea, the historic Mason and St MacDara's islands, and the beautiful surrounding countryside. Situated in the south west corner of Connemara, the complex is an ideal location for touring and exploring Connemara and South Mayo. Carna, which is situated in the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking region) is an important centre for Traditional singing, music, and dancing, with weekly sessions in neighbouring Kilkieran. There are a host of activities within easy reach, including a number of spectacular, unspoiled white sand beaches at Moyrus, (1.5 km) Mynish (7 km) and Callowfinish (8 km). The area is also ideal for walking or cycling, with little traffic, stunning views, and the cleanest air in Europe.

About Riona Connolly Green
My Name is Riona-Connolly Green, and I am a retired second-level teacher. I live here in Bru na Mara with my husband and my dog "Spot." We have a son and daughter who work elsewhere. My family started running Bru Na Mara as a guest house in 1933, and we re-opened as a high quality totally renovated Self Catering Accommodation centre in 2003. While teaching offered its own rewards, in helping young people reach their potential over the course of the school year, operating holiday accommodation is very different in that every week new people arrive, usually desperately in need of a rest and relaxation, and at the end of their stay they leave transformed for the better.

Why Riona Connolly Green chose County Galway
I grew up in this house, and running this business has given me the opportunity to meet and welcome people from all over the world, of all nationalities, and allowed me to share with them the incredible beauty of my native area which I so cherish. I have travelled all over the world in the course of my life, and it's very rare to be able to find a place like Connemara with six entirely different types of landscape within minutes of each other. (Coastal, Mountain, Bogland, Lakeland, Fjord, Meadow) So it is a matter of immense pride that people from all over the world come to the area I grew up in to enjoy it's unique culture and extraordinary natural beauty.
What makes this Apartment unique
The air in Mace Head is so pure that it is the site of one of the most important atmospheric research stations on the European continent. The air comes directly across the Atlantic, and supports a wide variety of fragile and rare plant and lichen species. The proliferation of wild flowers and plants is extraordinary. The Views from the premises include Mountains, Islands and Coast, and at night time, you can see stars. In fact you are so far from sources of light pollution that you can see all the stars. You are right on the very edge of the entire European landmass where it is possible to get away from the world if only for a short time, and get back in touch with the beauty of nature. I can guarantee you, that wherever you are reading this, that the Carna area is about as different from where you are right now as it's possible to get. And Bru Na Mara is the ideal place to stay to enjoy this unique part of the world.

Wild Atlantic break
We had a great holiday staying with Riona at the Bru Na Mara complex. We received a warm welcome along with a pack of the essentials to start the holiday. Riona has extensive knowledge of the local area and is happy to share with guests.
The apartment served our needs very well and had all that we required. The complex is in a quiet area and so was an opportunity to get away from it all -surrounded by beautiful scenery with the ocean right on your doorstep. We'd definitely recommend. Mark and Rebecca
We had a great stay at Ana Bru na Mara. Riona welcomed us warmly and set us on track with a lovely welcome package of goodies and some great ideas of things to do. The cottage was clean and with great views and for the most part well equipped. We were very comfortable throughout our stay. The only thing Riona couldn't arrange was the weather and while there was not too much rain the wind was strong but we got out to see lots and the cottage was an excellent base to do that from.
Beautiful views, lovely apartment,
Riona was a wonderful host, very communicative before we arrived with information on how to find the apartment and then thankfully met us at 10pm to show us the last section in the dark. The place Aoibhneas-Bru na Mara was exceptionally clean and had everything one could need for a weeks break away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Beautiful views of the ocean and the mountains from different windows kept our attention more than the TV for most of the stay! Riona gave us lots of information on the local area and we explored the local area by foot, bike and car, the place being just that bit out of town to be remote but not in the middle of nowhere. The kitchen was perfect for a weeks stay, the cooker better than ours at home and had a toaster, blender, kettle etc, perfectly equiped for a self catering holiday. The bottle of wine Riona left for us was fabulous too. The bathroom has a great shower, very powerful and hot. We had great sleeps too thanks to a great mattress and lovely bedding. We'll definitely be back and recommend to others. One of our best holidays yet thanks for Riona (and Spot the Dog!)
On the edge of the sea
Riona is a perfect host for this lovely property.
As a retired teacher, she brings a wealth of knowledge to guests and friends who are seeking adventure in Connemara. The apartment is welcoming - Riona provided us with fresh eggs, butter, cheese, a bottle of wine and fantastic Irish bread to start us off on our discovery of the west side of Ireland. Connemara smokehouse is not far and worth a visit, as are the little seaside towns nearby. The house is equipped with laundry facilities and internet/tv for chilly evenings.
Don't miss the rare coral beaches in the area!
beauty by the sea
This is a little gem on the sea! If you are looking for a warm, welcoming home away-from-home with all of the essentials, this holiday home is for you! Perfect for those who want a home base for exploring the stunning beauty of Connemara. Bring your GPS and vehicle to discover the Irish landscape! Riona is an expert guide with knowledge of local sights, amazing culinary finds and interesting things to do. We stayed in Aoibhneas - a generous 2-room apartment in the main house equipped with a full kitchen, living room and bath. The views from the apartment look out over the sea and the rock-lined pastures behind the house. This is a great spot for young families and couples who want to see the real side of Ireland!
Perfect week at the sea!
We stayed in "Aoibhneas" for one week this August and had a very wonderful week in beautiful Connemara. Riona is a great hostess and we felt welcome from the first moment on.
The apartment has 2 sleeping rooms, a living room, a small kitchen and a bathroom with shower - all nicely decorated and super clean and with views towards the sea and/or the mountains. We were welcomed with wine, cheese, eggs, butter, milk and bread - a perfect start for a week or more off.
Riona also provided us with alot of information about trips in the area and was ever so helpful.
We loved the fact that Bru Na Mara is directly by the sea and we could just leave the house, sit outside and watch the tides come and go.
Who had not yet been to Connemara, should go at once! For we fell in love with the beauty of the countryside, the great views, the coulds and sheep!
Thank you, Riona and Birdie, for everything!
