About Riona Connolly Green

My Name is Riona-Connolly Green, and I am a retired second-level teacher. I live here in Bru na Mara with my husband and my dog "Spot." We have a son and daughter who work elsewhere. My family started running Bru Na Mara as a guest house in 1933, and we re-opened as a high quality totally renovated Self Catering Accommodation centre in 2003.

While teaching offered its own rewards, in helping young people reach their potential over the course of the school year, operating holiday accommodation is very different in that every week new people arrive, usually desperately in need of a rest and relaxation, and at the end of their stay they leave transformed for the better.

Riona Connolly Green purchased this house in 2001

Why Riona Connolly Green chose Connemara

I grew up in this house, and running this business has given me the opportunity to meet and welcome people from all over the world, of all nationalities, and allowed me to share with them the incredible beauty of my native area which I so cherish.

I have travelled all over the world in the course of my life, and it's very rare to be able to find a place like Connemara with six entirely different types of landscape within minutes of each other. (Coastal, Mountain, Bogland, Lakeland, Fjord, Meadow)

So it is a matter of immense pride that people from all over the world come to the area I grew up in to enjoy it's unique culture and extraordinary natural beauty.

What makes this house unique

The air in Mace Head is so pure that it is the site of one of the most important atmospheric research stations on the European continent. The air comes directly across the Atlantic, and supports a wide variety of fragile and rare plant and lichen species. The proliferation of wild flowers and plants is extraordinary.

The Views from the premises include Mountains, Islands and Coast, and at night time, you can see stars. In fact you are so far from sources of light pollution that you can see all the stars. You are right on the very edge of the entire European landmass where it is possible to get away from the world if only for a short time, and get back in touch with the beauty of nature.

I can guarantee you, that wherever you are reading this, that the Carna area is about as different from where you are right now as it's possible to get. And Bru Na Mara is the ideal place to stay to enjoy this unique part of the world.

Dara-Bru na Mara
average rating of 4.9375 based on 64 reviews

A lovely house, tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean & well equipped.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday in Dara Bru Na Mara! Excellent location beside the sea in a remote part of Connemara. The grounds outside the property are meticulously kept. Our children really enjoyed climbing the rocks & stones alongside the sea. The inside of the house is spacious & very clean. The kitchen was well stocked with crockery & utensils. The beds were comfortable & had nice bedlinen. The WIFI was reliable & satellite TV was available. The oil fired heating is set to come on morning & evening, we also lit the fire one day that it was stormy.

Riona was a very nice lady, informative about local attractions & readily available to answer any questions.

We visited Inishmore island, Connemara National Park (climbed Diamond Hill), Kylemore Abbey, Clifden, Roundstone, Cong, went pony trekking in Ballyconneely, visited Dog's Bay, Gurteen's Bay & the local Mweenish beach, enjoyed it all thoroughly.

An oasis of calm

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two weeks. It was very quiet and relaxing, right on the edge of the ocean (we even saw whales one morning). Riona is the perfect host, knowledgable about the local area and history, hospitable and allows you your space. The apartment was well presented, and the views are superb.

Not too far away from the edge of Europe

  • 5 of 5

The location of Riona's cottage is exceptionally beautiful. While in front of the door the wild Atlantic was raving, in the hinterland you may get lost among sheep, stones, erratic boulders, bogs and countless lakes. BTW bogs, unbelievable for us that sundew and butterwort just grow beside the road in the ditch. In the Alpine Foothills, South of Munich (Bavaria), you can find them only in limited areas and if you - at all - were lucky to see them, than it would be a sensation. Riona provided us with welcoming food and drinks and delivered a lot of useful information which - to say the truth - we were unable to follow completely. Caught with some particularities such as flowers, rocks, landscape formations we only could grip a small part of our resolutions. It turned out that Riona is still an expert in rocks giving us some necessary hints.

Soon we got familiar with Riona's home, especially due to her approach to protect the environment by reducing waste and separating bins, cans, paper etc. We felt like being at home. The tiny sleeping room will be kept in our mind forever. What a stunning view towards the sea! We're afraid we won't have this in heaven again!

Lovely memories with an amazing stay!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the DARA at Bru na Mara with my father for his birthday this year from 22nd to the 28th of May and it had been the most beautiful and wonderful vacation we have ever had. It's literally a dream, something you would read about in a novel or see in a movie, but you'll be experiencing it in reality. Coming from New York City, this little sanctuary on the west coast of Ireland carried me to another world in which I still live from time to time. Riona is the most adorable lady you can imagine and we bonded instantly and I think of her and her wonderland often and so dearly. The house is immaculate to say the least, the cleanness, comfort and tasteful decor were only few of the extraordinary qualities this place had to offer.. and I can't wait to be back there with my family again!!! Thank you Riona for bringing such delight into our lives! We miss you and we will see you again soon!!!
