A True Log Cabin Nestled In The Forest
- english, dutch
About Wilma Roberts
The owners visited Palomar Mountain on one of their first dates. They fell in love with the mountain, and each other, and discovered the land shortly before they had their two children. Designing and building the lodge was their first project. Looking out the living room off the deck, they have seen on some occasions the Palomar Observatory opening it's window to the stars.
Why Wilma Roberts chose Palomar Mountain
The Ponderosa with the Lodge and now two cabins, is such a wonderful way to share family time with their now-grown children and grand kids. The have many happy memories sharing the forest, it's animals and the beauty of the Four Seasons with family and friends. They cherish the many weekends away from the hectic life of the city work, telephone and television.
What makes this Cabin unique

A small indulgence & forever memories
This was wonderful! I needed a break with nature & took my kids with me. The cabin is lovely. My kids loved the fire stove. I loved the loft with the private bedroom. We enjoyed the mountain, especially meeting neighbor Cecilia, watching baby goats birthed, trying home made cheese, seeing yarn woven. We also hit the observatory, went for a hike in the state park & grabbed a Julian chicken pot pie & other treats on the way home. Thank you for the wonderful memories!
Thank you for your nice review. The Ponderosa offers relaxation and solitude as well as some fun excursions for kids and adults alike. We hope you will return to our wonder in the woods soon.
Gorgeous property! Will definitely return.
We had such a lovely time staying at Ponderosa. We did get into a little bit of a snowy situation but luckily Brendan was available the day of our check out to help us out! Will definitely return!
I noticed that I rated you 4 stars by mistake.
It should definitely have been a 5 star guest.
We apologize for this error..
Amazing anniversary weekend as I am always in pain and have trigeminal neuralgia and occipital neruralgia so it was nice to relax and have my husband make me romantic fires. We did some hiking in the non-restricted areas and loved the amazing views. The cabin was clean and spacious. The cabin has everything you need and then some. Wilma kept great contact as we did make last minute plans of 24 hours and we made it to the mountains and had a great time. Go to the casino down the hill as a lot of places are not open if you check in after work like we did. That was fun too, there are restaurants that are 24 hours. I loved the woodpeckers in the afternoon they were quite entertaining. Brendan the caretaker of the cabin insisted on giving us champagne that was in the refrigerator for our anniversary and we obliged on our way out. He was friendly and made us feel welcome as some Air B and Bs and rentals make you feel like you have to leave immediately and that is not good business. Thanks Brendan for the welcome and Wilma thank you for the detail instructions, we WILL be back! THANKS AGAIN!
Your detailed review was greatly appreciated. The Ponderosa is a great place to relax and forget the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. We hope to have you back again to enjoy our four seasons soon
I started vacationing with my dogs a couple years ago and they love it (so do I). The Ponderosa is very secluded (definitely watch the video for the gate, Wilma provides all the info there). One hint, open just the side without the padlocks unless you are driving something huge. The cabin is set on a hill. It was icy and snowy when we first arrived for a 5-night stay so we played on the flat area between the cabin and road (I think I saw 2 vehicles go by during our stay). We also took walks up and down the road keeping an eye out for critters and no trespassing signs. The mountain lion warning is real (we saw one driving out) so you must be with your dogs at all times and have them leashed when walking about. My dogs are toy obsessed and I am quite vigilant during our play periods.
We did not use the loft but it would be awesome for a larger group, even the stairs are logs! We spent our time downstairs and due to the cold weather for the first few days, we (I, the dogs are not good with maintaining the fire) used the well-supplied wood to keep the cabin toasty warm. There is a heater for the downstairs bedroom which is quite effective. The hot water heater will make you jump the first time it starts but the hot shower is well worth it!
The decor is so well done. The kitchen light is so cool but you don't realize it until night time and it just boosts the homey/cozy atmosphere. The gas stove, micro, and toaster worked well, not a coffee drinker so no comment! The kitchen is quite roomy for family activity. The slab breakfast bar and galvanized steel countertop also make it a pleasant workplace for food or drawing. The pantry was a bit limited so be sure to bring seasonings, foil/plastic wraps that you might use. This was probably the best-maintained set of cookware that I have found in a rental though! The sliding patio door opens to the BBQ area with chairs to watch nature and a picnic table for fun activities and eating. Being outside is best. Due to the weather, we did not venture down the hill (it was icy snow). The huge oaks, cedars, and various pines were beautiful, especially the acorn woodpecker (look it up). Deer walked by on their daily commute, titmouse and squirrels entertained the dogs. Be sure to look at the art and notes left by previous travelers. Enjoy the outdoors and the starry nights!
I would have really weird spots of connectivity for texting but the internet was perfect with no downtime or lags.
Amazing cabin with every amenity for a wonderful stay
The Ponderosa cabin provided my family with the perfect long weekend getaway on Mt Palomar. We felt like the owners had thought of everything possible for a complete experience. My kids (9&14) loved the tree swing and would run out there first thing each morning. My wife and I loved the view from the patio and the sounds of nature. The WiFi worked flawlessly even 40yards away from the cabin while hiking their trail. Each night we watched Netflix after dinner and slept very well. We wanted to play horse shoes but never found the time (we’ll do that first on our next trip). When we were up at Boucher Lookout in the State Park a local asked us where we were staying. When we said “The Ponderosa Cabin” her eyes lit up and she told us how much she likes the Roberts (the owners).
One last note: On my way up the mountain we brought two cars and one was electric. I miscalculated how much battery power I would need and ended up having to stop 6miles from the cabin. The property caretaker Brendan dropped what he was doing and immediately drove out to pick me up and bring me to the cabin. I can’t thank him enough for everything he did to make our stay comfortable and relaxing.
We are glad your family enjoyed the Pondersa.
For a mountain getaway so close to San Diego, Fall and Winter are favorite seasons on Palomar. The changing colors and sometimes snow (Feb Mar) feel you are in a faraway place.
We hope to see you back again soon!
Absolutely perfect, will definitely come again.
Lovely, gorgeous home, easy move-in for short weekend getaway and sparkling clean when we arrived. My toddler loved the kids corner in the cabin and hiking all over the property down to the swing which has a gorgeous view to the mountains. Awesome, awesome, awesome will definitely try to book this cabin again.
Thank you for your nice review. We found that kids especially enjoy the mountain. Exploring the forest and going on nature hikes with them is a lot of fun. Be sure to try us again in February/March, who knows there may even be some snow....
Please ask for a link for 'Fun things to do from the Cabin' info to all that Palomar and the local area have to offer. (It will be posted here real soon!)
Step-back-in-time, old fashioned, family fun. A chance to listen to the quiet enjoying the beauty of our well-kept secret on Palomar Mountain.
You'll love it here. That's a promise!
