About the property

*For all bookings from August 15 to December 15, 2017. Applied to bookings from 4 to 6 nights. 7 days or after, a weekly price applies.

Behind the simple facade of this historic and urban cottage style house, lies a whole new and cozy world of contemporary ambiance and decor. Based on its colorful decor, my Family and I named it 'THE HOUSE OF COLORS'

Our house was just rehabbed and remodeled during the second half of 2013. We tore walls, added new windows, wall texture, painting and floors to create open and friendly spaces with lots of light. Then we added brand new contemporary furniture full of colors.

The house is centrally located in the prestigious Historic District of 'Olmos Park Terrace' where new young and mature urban professionals are moving to. This is an amazing location as the house is just 10-15 minutes away from San Antonio's main tourist spots. 4-5 miles to Downtown, Riverwalk (Paseo del Rio) and Convention Center, 5 Minutes to San Antonio's Zoo and SA's top 2 shopping, dining and entertainment centers which are 'North Star Mall' and 'The Quarry'. 24 minutes to Lackland Air Force Base. 18 minutes to Six Flags Fiesta Texas and 23 minutes to Sea World.

Also our Historic District neighbors the small affluent/upscale City of 'Olmos Park' which is inside San Antonio. Within walking distance there is a great neighborhood cafe, and very nice restaurants (Mexican, Italian, French, Vietnamese).

After visiting all the tourist spots in SA, our house offers a cozy patio with brand new and contemporary furniture to enjoy a nice evening with family/friends or a nice BBQ

Very few vacation rental houses are so close to everything and at the same time offering a setting of luxury and contemporary decor with new furniture.

About Ricardo Valdes

I am originally from Monterrey, Mexico. San Antonio has been my 2nd hometown for me and many of my family members. After working many years for consumer product corporations in Marketing Management positions, I lost my job back in 2009 due to the economy collapse. That is when I decided to move from the busy lifestyle in Los Angeles to San Antonio where most of my family members live. Having nurtured a passion for real estate during the last years of my corporate life, I decided to start a new career rehabbing and selling properties. Then I decided to rent one of my houses in VRBO/Homeaway and the rest is history. Today I own 2 rental houses in San Antonio and my family and I love sharing our houses with other people visiting San Antonio.

Ricardo Valdes purchased this house in 2013

Why Ricardo Valdes chose San Antonio

Urban life is more fun and exciting than suburban life when going on vacation or living temporarily in a city. When you live or vacation close to downtown San Antonio, you are closer to the culture, energy and personality of a city. When a saw this house for the first time, I saw a very simple cottage house facade. But after seeing its amazing location in a safe Historic District less than 4 miles from downtown and all the nice restaurants, bars and shops located in less than 2 miles, my dream was to turn this house into a cozy paradise of contemporary ambiance and decor, full of light and color.

What makes this house unique

Amazing location close to everything. Safe Historic District with a mix of Hispanic traditional families and upcoming young and mature urban professionals (Single and Married)

Great contemporary decor and ambiance.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the moment Ricardo accepted our request to stay at his Airbnb until the time we checked out our host made us feel like family. Six adults visiting San Antonio for the first time. None of us had ever used an Airbnb, but from this one experience will most definitely use it again. The house was even better than the beautiful photo's. His flare for decor was superb. Our beds were comfortable, the temperature in the house was perfect. He has a binder full of suggestions where to eat, grocery shop, and do laundry. We used his idea's and enjoyed true San Antonio cuisine. The neighborhood is delightful, we met neighbors on both sides of the house who were ultra friendly, we felt safe and protected. The location is ideal. We needed to be at the Fort Sam Houston base for Army graduation and it was easy peasy. Getting to the River walk was a short drive. In fact, all the sights and Texas BBQ we drove to was a short trek away. The highways are simple to maneuver on. WE found the people to be extraordinarily friendly. You would be crazy not to give this home a visit. WE loved it, loved our host and loved San Antonio. If our travels take us back to this glorious city we will stay at only one place. Casa Valdes!!!!

Great home, location and homeowner.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was very enjoyable. The decor/design was very modern. The backyard space was great for entertaining and hanging out. We had seven people and a baby sleep and stay here. With that said the rooms are large and comfortable. The home was very close to many amenities as well as downtown. Homeowner was prompt in getting back to me. Would definitely return.

Nice, but some issues

  • 3 of 5

Ricardo was responsive and the house was clean and welcoming. Some suggestions for future improvements include supplying two keys instead of one, toilet paper and tissues instead of the guest supplying, and hand soap at bathroom sinks. One bathroom needs a trash can and the main bathroom still has no electrical which was inconvenient. Also, it would be nice to have an extra set of towels on hand. Some of the beds, including the master bedroom had no mattress cover or pillow case covers, just the sheets, which seems rather unhygienic. Most disturbing was the very loud noises of animals in the attic above the master bedroom. It was so loud and eerie that we were unable to sleep in that room. The owner did have an inspector sent out the next day to set traps, but again it was SO loud and unsettling, that we just wanted to move, but had no other options.

Owner's Response: We are glad to know that our guest considered the house as nice, clean and welcoming. In relation to the issues reported, we have taken the following actions: We added a 2nd key for our guests. We added a trash can for the bathroom which was missing it. Only one of the beds was missing a mattress cover and we now included it. We added pillow covers besides the pillow sheets. In relation to the attic noises, we had a couple of squirrels which were using our attic as their shelter during the night. We found 2 small openings in the attic exterior siding which they were using as entrance. We covered these gaps. In relation to toilet paper, we provide for the 1st day of arrival. This is written in our contract and informed to every guest before their arrival.

5 day stay for an Air Force graduation

  • 3 of 5

The house was ok, at least we had somewhere to stay and enjoy our 5 day stay in Texas. House needs minor fix ups and needs to be kept clean. Also, we heard mice or something similar noises and running around in the attic. The house was so dusty, I'm surprised my allergies didn't act up. Other than that, house was close to alot of places including the Air Force base. I wouldn't mind going back if the minor things got fixed and the house was cleaner.

Owner's Response: We have taken the necessary measures with our cleaning team to make sure the house is impeccable like it always has been during the 3 years that we have been renting it. During these 3 years, we have received a majority of 5 star reviews from more than 30 guests and we are committed to maintain the same standards. We also ask our guests in our welcome letter that if they see something overlooked upon arrival, they can notify us and we will normally be able to resolve any overlooked situation within one hour or two. In relation to the noise of the attic, there are sometimes squirrels walking in the exterior roof of every house. Squirrels are part of our Southern Texas environment and they love to play on trees and sometimes jump once in a while to the roof of every house in San Antonio.

Good value for the price

  • 4 of 5

Overall, the property more than met our needs. The rooms are spacious, & the master bedroom is quite large, with enough space to accommodate an air mattress. (We slept 3 adults and 4 children comfortably.) The outdoor seating was a huge plus, providing a shaded area where we could relax while the kids played. While we didn't cook much during our trip, the kitchen was adequately stocked with the basics. Many of the items which guests are required to furnish were already there, left behind by prior renters: hand soap, dish soap, sponges, etc. As stated in the rental contract, we were provided one tower per guest, which was sufficient for our short stay. However, the only dish towel provided in the kitchen was a small, square wash rag.

The location is fabulous in terms of proximity to nearby attractions, and the owner did an excellent job of providing information, directions, and recommendations to nearby groceries, restaurants, and local attractions.

While the décor is comfortable and family-friendly, the house itself could use some work. Both towel hooks in the master bathroom are falling out of the wall (perhaps due to the lack of drywall anchors), so they would not support the weight of a towel. As mentioned in other reviews, the kitchen tiles near the garage access door are loose; the door is unusable, and the loose tiles were a safety issue for our 18-month old. The remodeling work is very much DIY with mostly low-end finishes - however, it is fine for a short vacation, especially at this price point.

We were a bit disappointed with the cleanliness of the home. While high-traffic surfaces had been dusted, nothing else had; some decorative items, knick-knacks, and wall-hangings had what appeared to be years of dust accumulated on the surfaces. The outside trash cans were completely full when we arrived; in fact, the recycling bin was also stuffed with trash.

A few notes to potential buyers: while the carport is technically long enough to accommodate three cars, nose-to-end, it is VERY narrow. Neither of our SUVs would fit, so we parked at the very end of the driveway, nearly into the road, without the benefit of cover. Also, there is essentially NO counter space in the bathrooms, and only one of the two bathrooms have outlets. (Ladies, that means hair dryers, curlers, and makeup are going to be very difficult.) We ended up taking down a wall mirror so we could get ready in a bedroom.

Still a great value for the price!

Owner's Response: My Family and I are very thankful for all the positive comments about the house: spacious rooms, great location, house equipment, backyard, etc. In relation to the areas of opportunity, we took the following steps: -We anchored in a better way the towel hooks in the bathrooms -We replaced the 5-6 kitchen floor tiles that were loose. As a result, now the 2nd door kitchen can be used as well. -We asked our cleaning team to perform a more detailed job in cleaning the wall hangings and wall decoration. We are planning to add an outlet in the 2nd bathroom so hairdryers can be used. We are sure that now that we have taken care of these items, out future guests are able to enjoy in a better way the amazing location of our house, our spacious rooms and the rest of our house features. We are very thankful with Alyssa for sharing all these comments.

Very comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here during our visit to San Antonio. We attended our son's Graduation Ceremony from Air Force Basic Training. This was our first time renting a vacation home. The owner made our experience very easy and very comfortable. Our goal was to have a home feel during our time with our Airmen. We were able to relax, enjoy sitting at the table and living room. The best part was being able to cook meals in the kitchen, just like home. The backyard was comfortable, we used the grill to cook dinner and then relax on the patio furniture. The home is located very close to downtown and were only 15-20 minutes from Lackland AFB. We enjoyed our time with our son and this place made it feel like home. The place was clean and the kitchen was well equipped.
