Casa „Oceanside“ was designed with love and function in mind. Cool and open during the hot summer months, but dry and cozy once the rain hits. The two storied concrete bungalow, perfectly tucked away in a lush tropical two acre garden teeming with wildlife can be, whatever you want it to be: A „surfer´s private refuge“, a „birdwatcher´s colourful paradise“, a „quiet girlie getaway“, a „honeymooner´s romantic hideout“ or a „wildlife enthusiat´s research base“. The house sleeps two persons comfortable (kingsize bed), or three at the most (additional sofa). Steps away from Playa Sombrero in the Matapalo Area, Casa „Oceanside“ offers everything you need for a lifetime experience along the jungles of the the pristine Osa Peninsula.
Being so far off the grid, we work with solar power around here. Our panels provide enough energy to power the lights, a refrigerator to keep your drinks cool and your veggies fresh, your laptop and also the B&W stereo system (iPod or iPhone docking station or cable into aux outlet). Our fresh water source is a deep well. The water gets pumped via a 12v solar pump into the tank ontop of a tower and flows back by gravity into the house. Our water has been tested by a laboratory in New York and is 100% drinkable and good for cooking. The fully equipped kitchen comes with all amenities, pots, pans, cuttlery and towels, a 4 range gas-stove, a big „Sundancer“ fridge and a breakfast countertop for 2-4 persons. The storage room that houses the solar batteries and the inverter (converting 12 volt solar power to 110v) also has a security safe for all your valuables such as credit cards, passports, cash money or cameras/phones.
A spacious living area with two sofas borders the office space with a big office table, bookshelf with plenty of reading material in German, Spanish and English and a reading sofa/day bed combo, that can easily serve as a third bed. The bathroom provides towels, hot water shower, hot water sink and toilet and was just redone with a very stylish slate floor. Upstairs you will find the master bedroom with a huge kingsize bed and a super comfy matress. A tight mashed mosquito net will help to keep insects out during the wet months. From December until May, you could easily sleep without the net. The Master bedroom is surrounded by terraces. The roofs of the bathroom and the office also serve as hangout platforms.
A big sundeck with two hammocks and wooden chairs plus table are perfect for that sundown cocktail while you watch howler monkeys up close, crazy squirrel monkeys swiftly leaping great distances from branch to branch, pairs of Scarlett Macaws flying overhead and hummingbirds buzzing close to your head. If you are lucky you will see an anteater strolling through the garden or a coati (pizote) checking for something to eat in the tropical bush. From the office roof, you can climb onto the roof of the bedroom via a comfortable ladder and gaze at the starts at night. During the summer months it is highly recommendable to throw some pillows up onto the roof and lie there for hours with a cool drink in hand, watching shooting stars, or checking the always visible Orion constellation, the beautiful Pleiades or the southern Zodiac signs. Nothing short of miraculous.
„National Geographic“ described the Osa Peninsula as „one of the world´s biologically most intense places on earth.“ Once here, you will quickly find out why. A hobby-birdwatcher from Minnesota recently counted 137 different species of birds on our property alone. Add the Riverotters, playing in our clear water river, that runs through the property, the occasional Sloth, Armadillos, Caimans, Turtles, Toucans, Aracaris, Monkeys, Anteaters, Iguanas or the Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Dolphins and Whales and you get an idea.
As for activities, they are almost too numerous to mention: Perfect Longboard- and easy learning waves for surfing, roll in right infront of the house. Grab a board, walk 80 yards to the beach at hightide and enjoy the waves with only you and a few other friendly surfers in the line-up. We also offer surf-lessons and rental boards. For the more experienced surfer, (almost) world class waves can be found in the close vicinity. Also: sea kayaking, SUP paddling, swimming, snorkeling, boogieboarding, sportfishing and boat trips are all possible. We can assist you with your trip into the Corcovado National Park too. Tidepools are waiting a 10 minute walk down the beach. Treeclimbing, jungle hikes, waterfall repelling, horseback riding, bird watching, yoga classes, massages, or just long walks along the wild and empty beaches without ever meeting another soul will make your stay a remarkable memory. Bring sandals, the sand gets very hot.
During your stay, there will be property management nearby. If you have questions, just ask. Rental Car assistance, medical attention, shopping in Puerto Jimenez, trip booking etc... We will be more than happy to help.

About Edmund Hartsch
Michelle is from Canada, grew up in Chile and has been living in Costa Rica since 1994. She is a journalist, worked as a TV host and loves to surf. Eddy is a passionate surfer from Germany, works as an author and journalist and came to Costa Rica in 1993.
Edmund Hartsch purchased this House in 1993
Why Edmund Hartsch chose Cantón Golfito
We arrived with a group of friends on Playa Sombrero in the fall of 1993. We fell instantly in love with the pristine jungle, the empty waves and the abundant wildlife. The Golfo Dulce, the blue sky and the purple clouds were almost too much. We never left.
What makes this House unique
Beauty, Privacy, Wildlife, Perfect Surf, endless lonely Beaches
Local Services & Businesses
Sports & Adventure Activities
The Best Experience!
We cannot say enough wonderful things about this hidden gem! It was such a peaceful place to relax and get away from the standard tourist route around Costa Rica. Eddie and Michelle were perfect hosts. There was some fruit and a bottle of wine waiting for us when we got there to celebrate our Honeymoon. Eddie even helped my husband change our flat tire when we got there and Michelle picked me up some meds when I got sick. The property is absolutely stunning and exactly what we were looking for. Private, unique and completely in nature. The sounds of the jungle on your first night can be overwhelming (ear plugs recommended) but you'll miss it as soon as you're gone! I was so mesmerized listening to the birds and howlers at sunrise, it's really something spectacular! The only negative about the house was that it was really hot when we were there, so my husband had a hard time sleeping without much air flow through the open bedroom. The battery fans didn't last more than a night or two.
We highly recommend a day hike into Corcovado Park, which they will book for you if you ask! The guide was amazing and spotted WAY more than we would have ever seen or heard. My husband and I are both beginner surfers, but had a great time out on their beautiful break for sunrise and sunset surfs (I did more laying on the board than surfing - still wonderful). The beaches close by are stunning and you'll find you'll have them almost to yourself. The Osa is truly special and we will certainly be back. It's obvious why Eddie and Michelle call it home! Thank you for sharing your property and creating such a memorable stay for us.

Beautiful House and Location, Lovely Hosts
We had a wonderful, restful 2 week vacation in January at Casa Oceanside on the Osa Peninsula. Despite a few days of unseasonable rain at the start, it cleared up and we made ourselves at home in this beautiful house. Both Michelle and Eddie were available to answer our questions and help us book an amazing guided tour of the Corcovado Park, wonderful massages with Flor, and just general advice. Lovely, down to earth people.
We especially enjoyed the numerous hammocks, the library (thanks, we're big readers and took full advantage!), the beautiful gardens - the flowers were amazing - as well as all the birds, monkeys and other wildlife. We are not surfers, but if you are this is a great spot as they also run a surfing school. Thank you both for the perfect escape and a wonderful place to celebrate our birthdays and our 35th Anniversary!
Oceanside is a truly amazing house with the best ever hosts that you could ask for. The house, gardens, location super exceeded our expectations. The house is truly beautiful and perfect for a couple or a family of three. We slept upstairs in the romantic white master bedroom open on all sides and overlooking the beautiful lush tropical gardens full of wildlife whilst our son slept downstairs on the sofa bed. The house has everything you need to eat in but don't miss out on the tasty tuna steaks at Martina's restaurant nearby.
We enjoyed an one day trip into Corcovado National Park with Surcos Tours and a boat trip with Josh on the gulf dolphin watching and snorkelling - both trips highly recommended - but most of all we loved just being at Oceanside - relaxing in one of the many hammocks, strolling along the deserted beach, body surfing or most of the time just listening to nature. This place is off grid so we went to bed early listening to the gentle waves of the sea and woke early to the morning chorus of the local howler monkeys. As our son said: 'Oceanside is paradise'.
Thank you Eddy and Michelle for being the perfect hosts and for allowing us to share your paradise if only for a few days. We do hope to be back one day in the meantime enjoy and look after paradise for us.
Dear fellow Travelers: Where do I start?..Maybe with the fact that we have met one of the loveliest couples ever (Eddy and Michelle)? Maybe with the fact that we were made to feel like being in our own home? Or maybe the beautiful surrounding, with a beach back yard where you are welcome to surf, or can be taught by a pro?
The house is just perfect in every way - designed with taste and simplicity, but convenient enough to cook, read, and sit on your private deck, and observe what nature has to offer - and it offers non stop, from variety of monkeys, toucans, parrots to name a few. I can go on for ever, but it will break my heart because we already miss it so...
It is a gem, and will always be a place that we will be returning to
Wonderful property terrific hosts
This house was everything I hoped for and more. Very nicely decorated intuitively designed to take advantage of natural breezes in the sleeping area upstairs. The garden and surrounding forest were beautiful and contained considerably more wildlife than we observed on our trip to Corcovado. Pizote / Spider monkeys / howlers / white face monkeys / otters in the stream you bridge over to get to the beach. Word to the wise make sure you lock up your bananas and avocados or the monkeys will help themselves while you are out.
The solar power was adequate to power the fridge-freezer. The water is potable and fresh tasting. We were there for a week and Michelle and Eddy were nice enough to have a cleaning person come freshen up the linens midway through. Grocery runs are easy 30 minute car ride into town.
Michelle and Eddy are caring and considerate hosts. Their local knowledge was indispensable. Eddy was even nice enough to book a tour for us prior to arrival at a better rate than I could have achieved on my own. They and their property are well respected among the other locals we had contact with. Make sure you hit up Martina's restaurant for lunch or dinner at least once she is a sweet heart with angels in the kitchen.
If you have ever wanted to learn to surf this is the spot. The beach out front is ideal for beginners and Michelle and Eddy offer lessons / boards. Or if you prefer there must be 20 hammocks around the house / beach area.
I have rented numerous properties over the years in various corners of the globe and count casa oceanside among the best around.
This home and location are a hidden jewel. The hosts are beyond incredible and we will be back again for certain :)
Casa Oceanside is situated on Playa Sombrero on a 2 acre piece of land, a tropical garden that has been cultivated for 20 years, but also has wild spots for the birds to nest in and high trees for the monkeys to cross. A clean river is running through it which is inhabited by otters, caimans, turtles and you see kingfishers and many types of herons daily. It is a beachfront property with lawn and coconut palms near the water. The surfable waves break right in front. You look out onto the spectacular Golfo Dulce with Panama visible in the background and Cabo Matapalo to the south. The ocean´s temperature is about 26 °C (78,8°F) all year. You can walk on the beach all the way to Puerto Jimenez in one direction if you like or to Backwash Bay and Matapalo in the other direction. The only beach bar and restaurant 'Buena Esperanza' is a 20 - 30 minute walk on the beach or a 5 minute drive by car. Corcovado National Park and Carate Beach is a 1 - 1,5 hour drive by car. 4x4 is recommended in the rainy season (May/April - Nov/Dec). Boat Trips (sport fishing or surfing in Pavones) as well as trips into the Corcovado National Park can be arranged in Puerto Jimenez. The little fishing village of Puerto Jimenez offers Supermarkets, Dentist, Hospital, Cafés, Restaurants, Internet Cafés, Travel Agents, Rental Car Services, Gas Station and a little bit of local nightlife on the weekends. From there you can also take the ferry to Golfito, fly in or out to San José.
