Casa „Oceanside“ was designed with love and function in mind. Cool and open during the hot summer months, but dry and cozy once the rain hits. The two storied concrete bungalow, perfectly tucked away in a lush tropical two acre garden teeming with wildlife can be, whatever you want it to be: A „surfer´s private refuge“, a „birdwatcher´s colourful paradise“, a „quiet girlie getaway“, a „honeymooner´s romantic hideout“ or a „wildlife enthusiat´s research base“. The house sleeps two persons comfortable (kingsize bed), or three at the most (additional sofa). Steps away from Playa Sombrero in the Matapalo Area, Casa „Oceanside“ offers everything you need for a lifetime experience along the jungles of the the pristine Osa Peninsula.
Being so far off the grid, we work with solar power around here. Our panels provide enough energy to power the lights, a refrigerator to keep your drinks cool and your veggies fresh, your laptop and also the B&W stereo system (iPod or iPhone docking station or cable into aux outlet). Our fresh water source is a deep well. The water gets pumped via a 12v solar pump into the tank ontop of a tower and flows back by gravity into the house. Our water has been tested by a laboratory in New York and is 100% drinkable and good for cooking. The fully equipped kitchen comes with all amenities, pots, pans, cuttlery and towels, a 4 range gas-stove, a big „Sundancer“ fridge and a breakfast countertop for 2-4 persons. The storage room that houses the solar batteries and the inverter (converting 12 volt solar power to 110v) also has a security safe for all your valuables such as credit cards, passports, cash money or cameras/phones.
A spacious living area with two sofas borders the office space with a big office table, bookshelf with plenty of reading material in German, Spanish and English and a reading sofa/day bed combo, that can easily serve as a third bed. The bathroom provides towels, hot water shower, hot water sink and toilet and was just redone with a very stylish slate floor. Upstairs you will find the master bedroom with a huge kingsize bed and a super comfy matress. A tight mashed mosquito net will help to keep insects out during the wet months. From December until May, you could easily sleep without the net. The Master bedroom is surrounded by terraces. The roofs of the bathroom and the office also serve as hangout platforms.
A big sundeck with two hammocks and wooden chairs plus table are perfect for that sundown cocktail while you watch howler monkeys up close, crazy squirrel monkeys swiftly leaping great distances from branch to branch, pairs of Scarlett Macaws flying overhead and hummingbirds buzzing close to your head. If you are lucky you will see an anteater strolling through the garden or a coati (pizote) checking for something to eat in the tropical bush. From the office roof, you can climb onto the roof of the bedroom via a comfortable ladder and gaze at the starts at night. During the summer months it is highly recommendable to throw some pillows up onto the roof and lie there for hours with a cool drink in hand, watching shooting stars, or checking the always visible Orion constellation, the beautiful Pleiades or the southern Zodiac signs. Nothing short of miraculous.
„National Geographic“ described the Osa Peninsula as „one of the world´s biologically most intense places on earth.“ Once here, you will quickly find out why. A hobby-birdwatcher from Minnesota recently counted 137 different species of birds on our property alone. Add the Riverotters, playing in our clear water river, that runs through the property, the occasional Sloth, Armadillos, Caimans, Turtles, Toucans, Aracaris, Monkeys, Anteaters, Iguanas or the Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Dolphins and Whales and you get an idea.
As for activities, they are almost too numerous to mention: Perfect Longboard- and easy learning waves for surfing, roll in right infront of the house. Grab a board, walk 80 yards to the beach at hightide and enjoy the waves with only you and a few other friendly surfers in the line-up. We also offer surf-lessons and rental boards. For the more experienced surfer, (almost) world class waves can be found in the close vicinity. Also: sea kayaking, SUP paddling, swimming, snorkeling, boogieboarding, sportfishing and boat trips are all possible. We can assist you with your trip into the Corcovado National Park too. Tidepools are waiting a 10 minute walk down the beach. Treeclimbing, jungle hikes, waterfall repelling, horseback riding, bird watching, yoga classes, massages, or just long walks along the wild and empty beaches without ever meeting another soul will make your stay a remarkable memory. Bring sandals, the sand gets very hot.
During your stay, there will be property management nearby. If you have questions, just ask. Rental Car assistance, medical attention, shopping in Puerto Jimenez, trip booking etc... We will be more than happy to help.
Michelle is from Canada, grew up in Chile and has been living in Costa Rica since 1994. She is a journalist, worked as a TV host and loves to surf.
Eddy is a passionate surfer from Germany, works as an author and journalist and came to Costa Rica in 1993.
Edmund Hartsch purchased this house in 1993
We arrived with a group of friends on Playa Sombrero in the fall of 1993. We fell instantly in love with the pristine jungle, the empty waves and the abundant wildlife. The Golfo Dulce, the blue sky and the purple clouds were almost too much. We never left.
Beauty, Privacy, Wildlife, Perfect Surf, endless lonely Beaches
My husband and I stayed at Oceanside for three (too short!) nights earlier this month. We could not have asked for a more perfect getaway or for more accommodating hosts. The house exceeded our expectations. It is beautifully crafted, very secure and well stocked. There was nothing we could have needed that Eddy and Michelle hadn't already thought of. The surrounding gardens were gorgeous with abundant wildlife, we would have been happy to just relax in the hammocks and soak up the nature. Eddy and Michelle were a short walk away and were happy to answer our questions, make suggestions and help us with everything from accurate, easy to follow directions to making calls to local contacts to arrange activities for us during our stay to picking up ice and beer for us so we didn't have to make the long drive into town. They really went above and beyond. It was clear that they love what they do and love making their guests feel well cared for. We certainly did. At their suggestion we wandered down the beach and found what turned out to be a fantastic little bar/restaurant with a small but excellent menu and friendly, lively service. The beach was beautiful, the forest lush and alive and the people all very welcoming. We had an amazing time. We will always remember it and hope to make it back to Casa Oceanside.
I'd like to keep this place a secret - but you couldn't ask for a more charming house, kind and chill hosts, and the best surf break in Cabo Matapalo! Perfect for the experienced surfer and his (very) beginner partner! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the house Michelle and Eddy so lovingly built. Watching the surf on "The Bench" was a highlight and created a memory we return to when we close our eyes on our busy daily lives. Thanks M&E, we'll see you again soon!
We spent the last 4 days of our Costa Rica holiday at this lovely little house,
everything was perfect, great location and lovely hosts, wish we could have stayed longer.
Thanks so much Michelle and Eddy!
I stumbled upon this listing and thought it was too good to be true – a beautiful house that was available during our vacation time – what was the catch? Well, the only “catch” was realizing it was on the Osa Peninsula and not the Nicoya Peninsula, where most travelers consider going. However, in reality, this was a HUGE bonus! We fell in love with the remoteness of the area and lack of commercialism normally found in more touristy areas. The property is exactly as it’s pictured and described, but more so. Michelle and Eddy are super helpful, accommodating, and just wonderful people to be around. If we had a problem or a question, they were around to immediately help. The area, although a 6 hour drive or a 45 minute flight from San Jose, has more than enough activities to keep anyone looking for something to do busy – we spent a week and should have spent two. We spent two separate days hiking in the Corcovado National Rain Forest (“Ifi” from Osa Wild can arrange the logistics – Michelle & Eddy can get you in contact with her) where we saw some unique wildlife. Michelle also arranged a morning horseback riding session at a nearby ranch where the guide took us through a rain forest, to a waterfall, and to the beach to run the horses. We got SUP paddling lessons from Eddy one evening – which was fantastic! And we enjoyed plenty of local restaurants that were a short walk or drive away, in addition to cooking in our own kitchen. The property was clean and well-maintained – no air conditioning for those who have to have it – but that’s ok – we loved the open air and ocean breeze that cooled the house. We slept on the roof under the stars one night – that’s how wonderfully inviting the house and environment is. This is not the place to do work via high speed internet – leave that at home and unplug to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. The only thing that took me by surprise was the 12 km dirt road from Puerto Jiminez to Casa Oceanside. It was one bumpy ride. If you rent a car, make sure it has good suspension. This place is perfect for a romantic getaway and enjoying the Osa Peninsula and all it has to offer. The icing on the cake was Michelle and Eddy’s welcoming hospitality and the Osa Peninsula locals – all were super wonderful and a joy to get to know.
The surfers beach house is absolutely divine, and we are so glad we stayed! The location is excellent, it's totally private, right off the beach and nestled in jungle, with wild life all around. The house itself is stunning and looks like it should be in an architectural magazine, plus it is functional in really smart ways. The Osa jungle is a hot and damp place, but this house stays pretty cool and dry because of how its built. Plus the balconies! The pictures don't do it justice.
In the high season it's a short walk to a restaurant/bar that is a treat to visit. The only downfall of our stay was having to leave! Eddy & Michelle are excellent hosts- they helped us hook up taxis and other necessities, were kind, helpful and laid back. We feel so happy to have met them and stayed in their beautiful home!
Casa Oceanside is situated on Playa Sombrero on a 2 acre piece of land, a tropical garden that has been cultivated for 20 years, but also has wild spots for the birds to nest in and high trees for the monkeys to cross. A clean river is running through it which is inhabited by otters, caimans, turtles and you see kingfishers and many types of herons daily. It is a beachfront property with lawn and coconut palms near the water. The surfable waves break right in front. You look out onto the spectacular Golfo Dulce with Panama visible in the background and Cabo Matapalo to the south. The ocean´s temperature is about 26 °C (78,8°F) all year. You can walk on the beach all the way to Puerto Jimenez in one direction if you like or to Backwash Bay and Matapalo in the other direction. The only beach bar and restaurant 'Buena Esperanza' is a 20 - 30 minute walk on the beach or a 5 minute drive by car. Corcovado National Park and Carate Beach is a 1 - 1,5 hour drive by car. 4x4 is recommended in the rainy season (May/April - Nov/Dec). Boat Trips (sport fishing or surfing in Pavones) as well as trips into the Corcovado National Park can be arranged in Puerto Jimenez. The little fishing village of Puerto Jimenez offers Supermarkets, Dentist, Hospital, Cafés, Restaurants, Internet Cafés, Travel Agents, Rental Car Services, Gas Station and a little bit of local nightlife on the weekends. From there you can also take the ferry to Golfito, fly in or out to San José.
