Pacific Grove House Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 5

'I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' (John Steinbeck: A Life in Letters). John Steinbeck wrote these words to a friend about this charming house he called home in the 1940s.

This cottage was featured in Country Living's article "You'll Never Guess Which Classic American Author's Cottage is For Rent." http://www.countryliving.com/life/a35903/homeaway-cottage/

The Space

This cottage has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. It has been renovated to pay homage to the period and history of the property.

This darling home, known as The Steinbeck Cottage, has a beautiful living room with a tent cathedral ceiling. It's focal point is the fireplace, richly adorned with carvings of birds and flowers. It has a queen sleeper sofa, a love seat, two reading chairs and a flatscreen TV.

There is a large bedroom, accommodating a queen bed, a sitting area with a twin sleeper sofa, flat screen TV and a cozy electric fireplace. There is a fully stocked kitchen with everything you need to create great meals. The dining room has a farm table and is surrounded by floor to ceiling picture windows, overlooking the garden and offering peaks of the bay. The beautiful bathroom features white subway tiles in the shower and blue Moroccan lantern tiles on the floor. The front yard offers an outdoor sitting area with a fire pit for conversation and warmth. The cottage has cable TV, a DVD player and wireless internet.

The cottage is approximately 900 square feet. It is original architecture from the 1920’s and has short doorways throughout the cottage. Taller guests will need to mind their heads when passing through the rooms.

It is one of three cottages on the property and next to The Writer's Studio and in front of The Traveler's Cottage.

Interaction with Guests

While The Steinbeck Cottage is one of the three cottages on the property, it offers plenty of privacy and a dedicated outdoor area.

For larger groups, The Steinbeck Cottage can be rented with the other two cottages on the property, The Writer's Studio (VRBO property #485366), and The Traveler's Cottage (VRBO property #464633).

The Neighborhood

Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A.,” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S.,” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove.

You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty.

Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built.

Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March.

Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill.

Getting Around

The Steinbeck Cottage is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away.

There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area.

Other Things to Note

- Our cottage is licensed with the city of Pacific Grove.

- There is a two-night minimum stay requirement for all bookings.

- Check-in time is 4:00 pm and check-out time is 11:00 am.

- There is a firm no smoking and no pet policy.

About Kevin & Vicky Delaney

We are Kevin and Vicky. It’s nice to meet you! Here’s a little bit about us…

This is Kevin. I was born in San Francisco, lived in Ireland when I was young, but San Jose has been home for most of my life. I’m an avid reader, enjoy writing, and I love history.

This is Vicky. I was born in Vietnam and I immigrated to the US with my family when I was 2 years old. I work in high-tech, love baking and traveling, and can be found at the gym regularly.

Together, we love exploring new things. Whether it’s new foods, places to visit or experiences, we love the adventure of life. Most of all, we love time with each other, our kids, family and friends.

Kevin & Vicky Delaney purchased this house in 2012

Why Kevin & Vicky Delaney chose Central Coast California

Pacific Grove is a charming town with wonderful restaurants, a beautiful coastline and the historic Cannery Row. And there’s plenty to do – sailing, whale watching, hiking, kayaking, cycling, and wonderful coastline pathways to stroll between the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Lover’s Point. Pacific Grove also has the historic literary appeal of being the home of John Steinbeck, American author and Pulitzer Prize winner.

What makes this house unique

Besides being charming and beautiful, the cottages are distinctly unique having once been the home of author John Steinbeck. There is a rich and wonderful history to these 100-year-old cottages.

When Steinbeck resided here he formulated the plot of The Grapes of Wrath, and wrote several books including The Sea of Cortez. This is the home he shared with his second wife, Gwyn Conger, who would become the inspiration for the lead antagonist, Kate Trask, in his epic novel, East of Eden. In a letter to a friend, Steinbeck wrote of the cottages, “It is a pleasant little house, and we miss it… You’ll find you get a lot of thinking done in that house.” ' (from John Steinbeck, A Life in Letters).

We are excited to share this wonderful piece of history with you and know you will enjoy your stay.

Relaxing stay in historic gem

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in this sweet cottage was one of our best experiences with VRBO. The entire home was cozy, clean, and outfitted with everything we needed. Comfy blankets were in every room for lounging, watching movies (a great selection was on the shelf), reading (Steinbeck and others were in the den), and napping. We will definitely stay here in future visits to the area. The house is walking distance to the aquarium and Cannery Row. An ideal location in a quiet neighborhood with a view of the Bay.

A dream for Steinbeck lovers and those who love dreamy accommodations.

  • 4 of 5

The Steinbeck Cottage decor is absolutely charming. It feels like you are residing under a canopy tented ceiling, and the decor is stunning. The residence is very clean which to me increases my level of comfort with a property. Parking for this propert is very easy, right outside on the front street which is not ridiculously busy. This makes bringing your bags in easy and convenient. All of the major and small appliances that we used were in great condition and working order. The bathroom is cute and well maintained, the shower head height may be a bit low for tall guests but it is manageable. Part and parcel for the charm of this property. The location was a short drive to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannary Row, and Carmel By The Sea. It was close to grocery stores and pharmacies. The owners, Kevin and Vicky were excellent communicators from the initial questions regarding the cottage to our arrival they answered our phone call or texts immediately. I would certainly do business with these owners again.

New favorite place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

From the thoughtful details in every nook and cranny, to the kitchens stocked with every necessity, to the quiet coziness of the rooms, to the unexpectedly charming outdoor space, this cottage was perfection. We rented all three cottages for our family and felt instantly at home among the books and mindful furnishings. Accommodations were white-glove clean, linens were high-quality and welcoming, and the customer service was personal, attentive and hospitable. We had several visitors and every single one wants to come back to stay. We will be there again and again with our two children. Could not ask for more.

Everything was as listed or better. The photos don't even do it justice. Conveniently located in town near groceries, shopping, beaches and tourist fun, but quietly tucked in a peaceful neighborhood. I can't emphasize enough how wonderful it was.

Five stars......easily one of the most enjoyable stays ever. Located close to all that you can want in pacific grove-monterey. Very profesionally run by the owners. Clean, comfortable, and overall really unique property. We rented both the writers studio and the steinbeck cottage. Really grateful to stay in such a historic location. Literary Leisure

  • 5 of 5

Very interesting combination of a unique architectural old structure with tentlike rooflines and many nooks and crannies, yet all the modern conveniences to make your stay comfortable. Very easy to work with and attentive owners. Location is nice and close to downtown Pacific Grove restaurants and the Monterrey. Aquarium. We stayed four nights, just two of us, and there is plenty of room for more. Kitchen is a throwback to the early 20th century but quite functional. You will not find a place with more character and quaintness, not to mention the association with Steinbeck. Thoughtfully, there are DVDs of East of Eden and Cannery Row, both of which we watched, and a book of his letters. Good value for the cost.

Great find

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at the Steinbeck cottage. Everything is so cute and the cottage is very comfortable. It's like walking back in time. The cottage is lovingly maintained and restored. It's a convenient location for exploring Monterey. Short walk to the aquarium and shops and restaurants. Plenty of all day street parking.
