The Queen Belmont Retreat is located

in the heart of Charlottesville's trendiest neighborhood, the Queen Belmont Retreat is a freshly renovated 2 story West wing of the home, perfect for a weekend vacation. Joan Schatzman, who lives in the East wing, the unofficial 'Mayor of Belmont' and a master carpenter, restored this 1880 house (originally the C&O engineer's home) and large garden herself. An international traveler, Joan has shaped her guest rooms into just what she would like to find: high quality linens, feather pillows and fine lambswool mattress covers make beds so inviting that you might not want to leave. But Charlottesville offers too many enticements to keep you indoors: our World Heritage site university (be sure to catch one of the student led tours of Jefferson's Academical Village), Monticello, Montpelier, Ash Lawn, music festivals, wineries, cideries and breweries tours, hiking trails and proximity to the Blue Ridge, kayaking and canoeing, antiquing. . . There is something for everyone to enjoy in our area, which consistently tops the '100 Best Places to Live and Visit' lists.

The QBR has 2 bedrooms, 1 with a queen bed and 1 with twin beds and a Juliet balcony . There is a shared bath between them, with a beautiful window view of Monticello Mountain and Mount Alto and Joan's gardens. Downstairs is a cozy salon where you will find a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker for your convenience. Down the hall is a full bath room.

The Queen Belmont is LBGT welcoming and is pet friendly (older small dog in residence). Larger outdoor parties may be held in the spacious garden (bonfire area and extensive vegetable, fruit and flower gardens), with prior discussion. It is a charming, sunny and safe alternative to a hotel chain, in a walkable, quiet neighborhood. You will be minutes away from 5 acclaimed restaurants and bars, 3 small provisions shops and a short stroll to the Downtown pedestrian Mall and the free trolley to UVa Grounds.

The Retreat's namesake, the late Queen of Belmont, is still present in woodcut prints around the house. The staircase up to the bedrooms showcases an art gallery of the owner's artwork, available for purchase. There is a private entrance and plenty of on-street parking, and the QBR provides Wifi and smart TV. Due to the age of the house, the rooms are not universal access and there are 2 sets of stairs. Coffee is provided. Guests will have the run of the wing.

The Queen Belmont and premises are smoke free.

About Joan Schatzman

i bought the property in 1992. Over the years I slowly renovated the house and grounds doing a major project every year. What was once a grass yard is now a mature garden designed planted and maintained by me. I wanted year round produce and flower blooms.No mater what time of year it is I can cut flowers for my table or pick veggies for my dinner. A bee hive pollinates my 9 tree apple orchard, vegetables, flowers and fruit bushes. I 'rob' the honey every June. Inspired by Thomas Jefferson's Monticello gardens I created grassy paths for a parkland walk around the perimeter, the slower you go the more you will see. Twice a year i have an annual garden party the first Sunday in May and third Sunday in September.

Why Joan Schatzman chose Belmont

In 1989 I moved on to Douglas AV across the street from 204 Douglas. 'If it ever comes up for sale I will buy that big old farm house on a generous double lot.' In 1992 I closed the deal. The very first thing i did was move my garden to my new home. I cut windows into walls that had none to flood light into every room. I've added a screen porch, decks, patios and a fire pit. My goal was to make my home as comfortable, cozy, and self sufficient as possible.

The best thing about my house and guest wing is a slice of beautiful cozy quiet in the heart of the city. Seven restaurants are a one min walk to the top of the street. A door on the west wall opens to the balcony over looking Douglas AV. There is a writing table and chair, comfy chair with end table and lamp.

Great location in Belmont. Owner very friendly. Pet friendly. Had to keep dog on leash as she sells organic produce from lot, which is understandable. Comfortable for 4 people. Easy to get to restaurants in Belmont and 10 minute walk to the Mall. Would stay again.

Great home, close to everything!

Joan was such a wonderful host and we loved staying at her property! It was very well kept and comfortable and walking distance to everything we wanted to do. Joan had great suggestions for us in the area and was such a pleasure to interact with. We would definitely stay here again the next time we are in Charlottesville!

We loved our stay!!

We have always loved the Belmont neighborhood and we were looking forward to our weekend getaway. Joan's house did not disappoint! Just a lovely home with beautiful character. The house was very comfortable. Great beds, and showers - which is very important to me ; ) We especially enjoyed being able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. So close to awesome Belmont restaurants and the downtown mall. We loved the Italian restaurant Tavola right at the top of the road. We would definitely stay again. Thanks so much for sharing your home Joan.

Joan's home was lovely. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The location was fantastic- very close to the cute Belmont area. Joan was a wonderful hostess as well, sharing the products of her beautiful garden with us!
