We built Villa Les Ensemberts when our twin sons (now 30) were born. Emmanuel, a cartoon animator, shares his life between Kilkenny, Ireland, London and Denmark. Jonathan, an IT engineer, has created and is developing his own start-up in Paris: trusk.com (it is the Uber of small removals). I lost my husband in February 2012. After a career teaching English in Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles, I am now retired and teach the refugees French in Paris.
Owner purchased this Villa in 1991
Why Owner chose Sainte-Marie-de-Ré
We fell in love with Ile de Ré in the summer of 1989, our twins' first summer. Two years later we managed to buy one of the last seafront plots of land on the island. We had villa Les Ensemberts built in 1991, with my husband designing it and I in charge of interior decoration. The villa has been the family's summer place ever since and is constantly being refurbished, repainted and maintained in a perfect state, a challenge for this beachfront villa that was severely battered by the Xynthia storm in February 2010 and continues to be hit by storms every month of February. You will love the smell of the sea and light breeze every morning when you open the shutters of Villa Les Ensemberts!
What makes this Villa unique
Villa Les Ensemberts is literally on the beach /cliff, the views, sunsets, are fantastic. The heated swimming pool is a delight. The location on the Southern coast means it is protected from the winds. The secluded spot allows complete privacy. AN ISLAND OF FOUR SEASONS In September the tide continues to rise and ebb twice a day. Those who have the bright idea to visit out of the season never regret their decision: island life goes on with shops and services remaining open all year round. In autumn, visitors can admire golden sun-drenched vineyards and witness the grape harvest first-hand. In winter, the beaches empty to make way for horses and walkers wrapped up warmly against the wind.At Christmas, the oysters taste even better when they come directly from the nearby oyster beds. In spring the air is still cool when the first chairs reappear outside the cafés.

Lovely villa in amazing location
Really lovely large villa with unbelievable views to the sea. Excellent place for a large group with children. Easy cycle to la Flotte and st Martin almost all on cycle paths. Very highly recommended
Super location beachside villa
We had a most enjoyable spring stay at the villa with six children and six adults. The layout is suited to the family with a granny wing and family annexe either side of the heated pool. The facilities provided like table tennis, table football and bikes(extra) were superb for introducing young children to new skills. An amazing collection of toys were hidden in various drawers and the overall sense of being lived in and not pared down for rental was very welcoming. The owner and managing agent could not be more helpful.
The Villa was everything we had hoped for. The layout was perfect for our large family of ten adults, giving comfort & privacy to all. The ample garden was lovely, leading right down to the sea where we played boules in the evenings as the sun went down. The swimming pool was gorgeous & a really good size & quite warm enough considering it was October & the electric cover was a really nice addition too which seemed to help keep it super clean. The table tennis room was a huge success & the ample dining options were ideal for some lovely family meals. The location was great for cycling & walking. La Flotte & Saint Martin only a short drive or 15 to 20 minutes (gentle cycle) on the bikes. We had a really wonderful & memorable holiday at Les Ensemberts & hope to return again very soon.
Thank you so much for your review Cathy: it is nice to hear that even in early October you had such a great time. You are welcome to stay again. Kind regards. Catherine
Wonderful home on a delightful island
We enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home on Ile-de-Ré so very much. It was all the right things in all the right ways. We felt so at home. We made good use of the pool, the BBQ, the table tennis table, the beach, the bicycles... The house is very comfortable and well equipped and has wonderful flow and connection between the outside and indoor spaces.
Catherine, our host, and Romain who provided concierge services were both so helpful and pleasant to deal with. The area around the house is peaceful and calm. There is a charming market, boulangerie and other necessities in La Noue - an easy 10 minute bicycle ride from the house.
I would thoroughly recommend Les Ensemberts and I hope to return. Thank you, Catherine and Romain for a wonderful holiday.
Thank you so much, Julie. All owners dream of receiving such a review! I hope you can make it again to Les Ensemberts some time in the future. You are welcome any time!
Luxurious comfort right next to the sea
The house is truly lovely and has everything a guest could possibly need. The position is wonderful and we long to return to enjoy the pool and garden right by the sea in better weather.
Perhaps some of the beds were a little too small; we do tend to need our beds to be 190cm wide. However, the master bedroom was extremely comfortable and the many bathrooms and toilets was marvellous
I would love to bring my grandchildren to stay here with the huge number of toys and the table tennis is a joy.
Madame you have thought of just about everything. Thank you so much for your attention to detail and we loved the new restaurant you recommended . The weather was obviously unfortunate but it has not stopped us wanting to return.
Thank you so much for your kind review ! I hope you can make it again sometime in better whether. I am sorry to say we had gorgeous weather all September after you left!
We have just returned from the most wonderful holiday in the villa. It is absolutely oustanding. From the moment you walk in and gasp at the view to the moment you set off off, the villa is outstanding.
Morning cycles to the beautiful village square for breakfast, crabbing on the rocks, building sandcastles on the deserted beach, swimming in the glorious pool, sundowners at the end of the garden, cycle trips to the beautiful ports for superb meals. What more could you ask for?
We stayed with 3 families and easily has enough room.
Lastly, as with previous reviews, we found all of our dealings with Catherine and Romain the agent to be a pleasure. Everything done as promised with a smile.
Thank you so much for the kind encouraging words ! Hoping to meet your requirements next year as well ! Kind regards. Catherine
Airport La Rochelle – Ile de Re (LRH), lies just outside La Rochelle on the French mainland, and is connected to the Ile de Re by a 3km toll bridge. EasyJet, Ryanair and Flybe provide direct flights to Ile de Re Airport from Bristol (BRS), London Gatwick (LGW), Southampton (SOU), Manchester (MAN) and Dublin (DUB).
The Ile de Re is a glorious island of nature, culture and safe beaches just off the Charente-Maritime coast in western France.
The island is known for the magnificent climate, safe beaches and calm ambiance.
The property is a perfect base from which to investigate the sandy beaches, salt marshes and vineyards that have made the island famous as a holiday retreat in the sun.
Things to do on holiday in Ile de Re: The natural beauty of the Ile de Re has been protected by strict planning controls keeping all Ile de Re properties and buildings under two stories high.
Holiday properties on the Ile de Re tend to be low-lying whitewashed apartments with green-coloured shutters and terracotta roofs.
The finest beaches on the island are found to the south of the island, where the sand is soft, and there are plenty of idyllic spots to set your towel.
The northern beaches are rocky and flat, with very shallow waters perfect for oyster and mussel cultivation.
Ile de Re surfing holidays are great fun. The shallow beaches of Le Bois Plage and La Couarde are battered by huge Atlantic breakers, perfect for surfing. Ile de Re is home to a number of surf schools providing both lessons for children who have never tried the sport before to refresher courses for those with a few waves under their belt.
Water-skiing, wake boarding and kite surfing also thrive, and there are some exceptional places to go sailing, take a lesson or hire a yacht and discover your own spot of paradise on the Ile de Re.
There has always been a strong connection between the Ile de Re and horses, and that continues to this day. There is a range of excellent stables on the island, as well as a maze of magnificent bridle paths, taking riders to some of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island.
Walking holidays are also very enjoyable.
After a long day on the beaches or in the hills, there are three spa centres in which to get pampered. Spas specialise in thalassotherapy, the use of the maritime environment for the benefits of your health. Whether you are feeling under the weather or not, an afternoon in a thalassotherapy centre couldn’t be more relaxing!
Places to visit on holiday on Ile de Re: The island's capital, St-Martin de Re is a stunning fishing port in the north of the island. Surrounded by 17th century fortifications, St Martin de Re has a glorious atmosphere, maintained by the street café culture and seaside location.
Weather on Ile de Re : during the long summer months, temperatures average over 30°C (July and August). For the rest of the year, there is a mystical feel to the island, as holidaymakers disappear, despite average temperatures remaining above 10°C throughout the year.
Other Activities: the bustling Protestant city of La Rochelle on the mainland.
