Overview

About the property

2 bedroom + Loft + 1 Bathrooom

Three Bears Cabin is a quintessential storybook Tahoe cabin designed and built by famed Tahoe architect Burt Anderson (it is rumored that he even lived in this house at one point).

This cozy cabin is perfect for 1 or 2 couples (4 adult maximum) or a family of up to 5 for your summer or winter vacation on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. It is located 3 miles south of Tahoe City in the quiet neighborhood of Pineland, on a well-maintained road that is mostly traveled by local residents (no through traffic). You'll feel comfortable having the kids and dog playing in the yard around the house, knowing the car traffic is at a minimum here.

You'll enjoy a fully-equipped cabin with plenty of off- street parking, a large southeast facing wrap-around deck with outdoor dining and BBQ areas and a 6 person hot tub. Inside, an alarm system, mud room with ski racks and boot & glove dryers, full size washer and dryer, mountain decor and architecture, 39' flat screen TV with High-Def cable, TiVo DVR, Blueray DVD player and Apple TV are all available to make your stay feel like home. There is a second TV+DVD player in the loft, making it the perfect spot for the kids to settle in and watch a movie before bed. Secure 50MB wireless internet access is available for all your electronic devices. Central heating will keep you warm and cozy, and a freestanding gas stove in the living room adds extra warmth and ambiance. A recliner sofa in living room is ideal for settling in and watch the game or a movie. A fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom, and all bedding is provided to make your stay simple and relaxing.

The house is located directly across the street from Ward Creek, and the lake itself is located less than 1 mile away. Popular activities include fishing, boating, swimming, paddle boarding, kite boarding, kayaking, canoeing, sun bathing on the beach, etc.

Take a leisurely stroll to three great restaurants: Sunnyside Resort, Firesign, and Spoon. A ski/snowboard rental shop (West Shore Sports), and a mini-mart/deli/liquor store (Sunnyside Market) are all less than 1 mile away from the cabin.

A half-mile walk will take you to Kilner Park, where you can find beach volleyball, lighted tennis courts, swings, sandbox, jungle gym, and the biggest spiral slide in Tahoe! And just across Highway 89, you'll find the beach!

In winter, a shuttle bus conveniently stops directly in front of the house every 30 minutes for pick-up and drop-off at Alpine Meadows' Sherwood lift, which is only 2 miles/5 minute drive up the road. Imagine the convenience of not having to get in the car to get to your ski lift! Cross country skiing, back country skiing, and snowmobiling is accessible right out of the back door. Family-friendly Homewood Ski Resort is only 3.5 miles away and world renowned Squaw Valley is just 20 minutes away.

In summer, the Tahoe Rim Trailhead is conveniently located 1/2 mile away for your mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts. Less than 1 mile away, 15 miles of paved bike path makes for great family fun with commanding lake views. The bike path is also used for roller-blades, jogging, walking or access to the Truckee river for fishing and rafting. For those looking for more of a challenge, try biking up to either Alpine Meadows or Squaw Valley ski resorts from the bike path along Hwy 89.

Tahoe City is a short 3 miles drive where you will find all the amenities expected in a small mountain town: lake-side fine dining, shopping, coffee shops, bars, grocery & drug stores, ethnic food restaurants, movie theater, yoga studios & day spas, fitness clubs, banks, golf courses, bike/ski/snowboard rentals, river rafting, fly fishing, boat rentals, etc.

For additional nightlife options, gambling casinos and live concerts can be found in Crystal Bay, located at the California-Nevada boarder, 10 miles (20 minutes drive) north of Tahoe City. If this cabin is not avaiable during the dates of our Tahoe vactation please consider staying at our other property VRBO# 630558. It is also a cute 2BR+1BA Tahoe cabin located in the Timberland neighborhood on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.

About John Distefano

If this cabin is not avaiable during the dates of our Tahoe vactation please consider staying at our other property VRBO# 630558. It is also a cute 2BR+1BA Tahoe cabin located in the Timberland neighborhood on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.

What makes this cabin unique

There are three excellent dining choices about a mile of the house, all highly visible on Hwy 89, that are all right across the street from each other.

Sunnyside Resort offer high-end lakeside dining, Spoon offers family style dining, Firesign Cafe is a great breakfast and lunch spot, and Sunnyside Market and Deli where you can pick up deli-style sandwiches and basics (i.e. milk, eggs, bread, beer, soda, ice cream, etc.).

There are other options about 3 miles to the south on Hwy 89 around Homewood many, many more about 3 miles to the north in and around Tahoe City.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Three Bears cabin was a perfect choice for our ski trip. Off the bat, the cabin's set up accommodated a late arrival and multiple car parking on site, huge pluses for travelers with late flights into Reno and multiple vehicles not needing to worry about snow plow restrictions on the streets. The cabin is close to all the north Tahoe resorts and accommodates storage of ski gear (mud room has ski racks and plenty of hooks for jackets). The interior was very comfortable for our group of 5, and heating, appliances (which were all modern), hot water all worked perfectly. WiFi was flawless and hot tub set up was a cinch. John checked on us but really everything was set up perfectly in advance and no additional needs were required. House rules and check out requirements were all reasonable.

Notes:
Tahoe City is only five miles to the Squaw Valley turn-off, which is home to the 1960 Winter Olympics. Tahoe City also has public beaches, a marina, and a downtown area that is charming and filled with local shops, restaurants, and other commercial services. Tahoe City has many local events and many look forward to the seasonal Farmers’ Market, Free Beach Movies, and Sunday afternoon live music concerts on the beach. In the winter, many consider the SnowFest week of activities one of the best events of the entire year in the Tahoe City area. Tahoe City’s close proximity to Lake Tahoe recreational activities such as boating, hiking, biking (dirt and paved trails), tennis, golf, skiing, shopping, and restaurants makes this a great area for those that enjoy being outdoors, and getting away from it all. Perfect cozy cabin for a small group.

  • 4 of 5

Fantastically equipped with everything you need for a 2-4 person group. Beer bottle openers around the hot tub, nice. Easy to use gas fire place, just flip the switch and cozy is in full effect. Well thought out notes for guests indicating how to use the appliances and hot tub. The cabin has a stacked washer and dryer with easy to use controls-great for washing the mountain gear before you repack your luggage. The location is great. Only 10-15 minutes to nearby mountains. The only negative thing I can say is we really wanted to use the Apple TV and the remote was missing. We looked for 30 minutes then contacted management. When we inquired with management about the missing remote we were told to "play checkers instead". The guy was just joking but that was the end of our conversation and they never followed up to provide a solution. We have several 5 star vacation rentals in the San Diego area and this was disappointing to us and I felt we should be able to expect better. Overall a great place to stay.

Adorable cottage that stood up well to the "snow-copalypse"!

  • 4 of 5

This is a small but really cozy and nicely appointed cottage. Despite the completely extreme weather of feet and feet of snow that fell during our week, it remained warm, dry and with full service from water, power, internet etc. We were almost completely snowed in but John did what he could to get us help with plowing etc.

Nice, secluded cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at John's cabin with our little son and my parents for a winter weekend. The cabin is sufficiently sized for 4 people with 2 small kids or fewer, and the location is very quiet and cozy. Still, it's not too far back in the woods - we were there during a winter storm and happy that the plow trucks came through frequently.

The description and the pictures are very accurate and complete.

I would and likely will stay there again.

Amazing cabin in an ideal west shore location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at John's cabin this summer - the house is clean and comfortable and features lovely 1950s Tahoe architecture and design. It's not a large place but it's perfectly sized for a family or 2 - 3 couples. The bedrooms are comfortable, and even the fold-out sofa in the loft is comfy. The amenities were surprisingly great for a cabin - new washer/dryer, everything you could need for cooking, TV, nice clean BBQ. There were even white noise machines in the bedrooms and the stereo worked with my iPad! (these never work in hotel rooms). The deck was perfect for eating dinner outside and the hot tub was clean and worked well (plus it is professionally maintained each week which was great to see).

For those not familiar with Tahoe's West Shore, the cabin is located in a classic neighborhood called Pinelands, which is low traffic and ideal for walking or biking (we were pushing a stroller). From the cabin, you can walk or bike along Ward Creek to Alpine Ski Mountain or to Paige Meadows, and it's a short drive from some of the best spots along the lake (Sunnyside, Chambers, Sugar Pine Point, Tahoe City). I suspect this cabin could be even more fun in the winter and we're looking forward to returning during ski season. Thanks John!

Enjoyable stay at the Three Bears Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a pleasant stay at the Three Bears Cabin conveniently located near Tahoe City earlier this month. Everything was clean and in order upon our arrival. As an active family that enjoys being outdoors, we especially liked having use of the cabin's mud room to keep our snow gear organized and out of the way. The inside of the cabin was comfortable and well laid-out, and the presence of a high speed internet connection was a plus. We were lucky to have some new snow during our stay, so having the snow-covered wooded area behind the house to hike and play around in added to our enjoyment. John was pleasant to work with and responsive via email to our questions during our stay. A "just right" cabin for this family.
