|Minimum Stay||4 - 10 nights|
Mi casa es su casa when you visit Casa Esplendida in quaint and quiet Los Barriles, Baja California Sur, Mexico. You will be 4 miles north of Los Barriles and a 2-3 minute stroll from the tranquil Sea of Cortez.
Elevated and close enough to not only see passing whales but close enough to hearing them breathe is a very special treat. Momma and baby may even perform together right before your eyes. Dolphins cruise in close and the mobula rays are often present. When they are numerous, the rays sound like rapidly popping popcorn, the sound echoing across the still water.
Listen to the soft waves washing onto the beautiful sandy beach below and the Sea rouded rocks clattering in the surf. Drift away on your king size Mexican tempurpedic like memory foam mattress or let our comfy hammock embrace you.
After several years of exploring Southern Baja (and several other countries) to find our “perfect” location to build our secure private paradise, we purchased two lots side by side and built Casa Esplendida in 2004.
Sweeping panoramic views of the entire Bahia de los Palmas from the infamous Punta Pescadero (where Hollywood elites such as John Wayne and Bing Crosby came to fish) to the north and Punta Colorado 180 degrees to the south. You can swim, fish, snorkel, kite, SUP, beachcomb and kayak, all from the uncrowded sandy beach.
When you stay at Casa Esplendida, you will enter into casual luxury, including your own private large kidney shaped solar heated infinity edge pool and a 4 person double jetted relaxing hot tub. Both have incredible infinity views that drop into the beautiful blue and turquoise Sea of Cortez.
2200 SF m/l of open spacious indoor living with 1600 SF m/l of private beautifully landscaped terraces and lots of room to roam on the 1/2 acre. You'll find mango, papaya, orange and banana trees. If some of the trees are in season, Francisco may bring you fresh fruit for for your breakfast smoothie.
Comfortable chairs, tables, lounges and a custom double hammock are strategically placed for premium enjoyment of your vacation time. Feel like a dinner party? Plenty of room for that too, inside or out.
Our casa is clean, comfortable and secure with plenty of secure parking and two fully gated entrances complete with intercom and remote entry. There are slider controlled adjustable fans in every room.
The great room boasts a 16' ceiling with an exquisite recessed lighted mural, painted by Iliana, one of our famous local artists. You will find Iliana's work throughout the property, including the welcoming entry.
The recessed cedar custom entertainment center has a 42'' plasma HDTV, DVR, satellite TV with many channels in HD (very rare here), Bose DVD player, and a Marantz surround sound system that extends into the master bath and office. Secure DSL wireless internet is provided.
A wall of screened sliding doors opens onto your outdoor living areas. The pool, hot tub and oh yes....those expansive water and mountain views. You will see wildlife, windsurfers, kiters, SUPers, kayakers, fishermen, sail boats and motor boasts along with our many colorful and songful birds. Total relaxation is found here. The views over Bahia de las Palmas are more active than some as we are positioned to see the fishing fleets heading out early in the morning and returning around 3pm. Upon their return to port, they will display flags which identify the fresh catch of the day. In the evening, you will see the lights from our neighbors in La Rivera. Perhaps you may be dazzled by a full moon rising out of the Sea, cutting it's shiny path right to your door.
Many mornings, you may be treated to an outstanding East Cape sunrise. Get your coffee, find your seat, sit back and enjoy the show. Before your eyes, a gorgeous scene of bold and beautiful colors slowly comes to life then fades quickly into soft pastels and eventually to beautiful bright blue sky and relaxing warmth. It is truly an awe inspiring sight to behold.
While you are enjoying the show, many birds will be frolicking in the tall palms on the property and calling to one another.
The kitchen is complete with stainless appliances, mexican cedar cabinetry, four burner gas cooktop, 14' concrete island and two sinks, both with garbage disposals. There is plenty of room for more than one cook as you prepare your catch of the day or local fresh seafood which can be delivered right to your door! You can also get fresh tamales, burritos, empanadas and strawberries. For dining out, Los Barriles boasts many fine restaurants.
There is a triple reverse osmosis filter system with spouts on the main kitchen sink and in the double door refrigerator, complete with an ice maker. You will find plenty of spices in the pull out cabinet next to the oven.
The spacious master suite is hidden behind triple shoji doors. A screened slider opens onto the pool and hot tub. Rest peacefully on the king size memory foam bed or watch TV on the flat screen. A second bedroom with a comfortable queen bed and another full bath are on the North end of the casa. A large office has a futon with queen blow up air mattress.
Our efficient housekeeper will clean for you as often as you like. We can also arrange for transportation to and from the airport or tours with our driver Homar.
We are pleased to help make your vacation all you expect it to be when you stay at Casa Esplendida.

Really enjoyed our stay. The home is very comfortable and the views are stunning.
Being both tired as well as directionally challenged I managed to get lost on the way to Casa Esplendida, which, I now suspect was for a very good reason. By the time we found the right road we were frazzled, and just the tiniest bit grumpy... and that’s exactly when Casa Espendida works best. Upon opening the front door we forgot everything, I mean it, absolutely everything and drifted through the living room's open floor plan, replete with an amazing ceiling, and out to the patio where we were welcomed by the soft sounds of the surf and the sweeping views, oh yes, and chocolate and wine! We woke up each morning to the sunrise, drank in the view and basked in the warmth and comfort of this beautiful house. If you are looking to get away, this is the place, look no further! Each morning we enjoyed breakfast on the patio while whales breached in the distance and the hummingbirds zoomed around. Every afternoon we made our way down to the (spot on!) Recommended El Gecko for some outstanding food with unbeatable views of the water and the adventurous kite surfers. We would then scheme and plan, over amazing margaritas, just how early we could retire and move down to Los Barriles. (Once the margaritas wore off we realized we still had a long way to go until that day :-) but knowing that Casa Esplendida is here is a comfort, we look forward to coming back to enjoy Chris and Debbie’s amazing slice of tranquility. Thank you so much for sharing your home, and for such an unforgettable week, we were restored, revived and completely enchanted with your home and town! Sara y Josh
First, let me say, it is a conundrum to write this review. The more I rave about Chris and Debbie’s “ Casa Esplindida” the harder its going be to find an available date for our next visit. Nevertheless, my wife and I feel privileged to have stayed in their home this summer and we want to show our appreciation by writing this review for Chris and Debbie.
Before writing this review, I looked up the English translation of “Esplindida” and among the synonyms of Splendid and Magnificent, I came across this quote: “Endowed with a unique excellence” Their home is indeed that. It is impeccably beautiful, clean, and well maintained. My wife and I have stayed in many rental homes throughout the world and this was the first home that did not feel like a rental. It was as if Chris and Debbie had just left and asked us if we would stay and watch their home while they were away. Perhaps it was their artwork, décor, or landscaping. I am not sure but it definitely did not feel in any way like a rental.
When searching for a vacation rental, we have found that pictures often lie and make a home seem better than it really is. Although the pictures on their web site are great, they do not do their home justice. For example, in their pictures, you won’t see the three dimensional tiled fish around the infinity edge of their pool, you won’t see the hand painted tundra in ceiling lit up at night as if you were looking at the night sky, you won’t feel the comfort of their king size bed, and you won’t see the awesome views while standing in the double shower of the master bedroom on suite. This home is an architectural dream and exquisitely unique to say the least.
When you read their description of the home and Los Barriles, it is totally accurate and not exaggerated in the least. It has been twenty five years since we were here last in Los Barriles and little has changed…a little bigger and a few more homes but still the quaint “Old Mexico” feel. You will feel and be safe here ! It is not like mainland Mexico! The local Mexican people here are very friendly, courteous, and humble. You won’t get stares being the foreigner. You will get smiles ! One last note on the home: Francisco and Teresa take care of the home and grounds for Debbie and Chris. They are only there if you need them. They are the epitome of the local Mexican people as I said previously, friendly, courteous, and humble. Thank you Debbie and Chris for making our 25th Anniversary such an Awesome vacation.
The house was beautiful and very clean. The grounds were very well manicured and immaculate. The pool was great - perfect temperature. The location of the house was ideal, quiet street with privacy yet close enough to town to make a quick run in or spend the day eating and shopping. The beaches in the area are nice, and not crowded like many other places. The people who live in Los Barriles are very friendly. My wife and I and 3 kids enjoyed the vacation very much and intend on returning. The owners were gracious and helpful in planning our trip. Thank you for a great stay - we highly recommend Casa Esplendida for a relaxing vacation in the sun.
We were so fortunate to have the opportunity to start the New Year in our favorite "get-away", which of course is Casa Esplendida. We so enjoyed the solitude, privacy and ammenities. We spent two weeks this trip which gave us plenty of time to discover the beauty and culture of Los Barriles. The Saturday Market gave us a taste of the local foods, art and music...an absolute "must do". Can't forget the fresh fish & home made tamales that were delivered to our door....what a treat! We loved the expansive outdoor living area, which from any angle, provides you with the most spectular views of the Sea of Cortez...we shall return.
What a blissful oasis Casa Esplendida is. I felt like I was part of the sea with the infinity pool and an immense tile deck that served up glorious sunrises. Being up a little bit on the hillside gave our group spectacular views, and an easy sea breeze. I layed in the hammock for hours reading a book, dozing off, just in heaven relaxing, and I don't relax easily! And, the casa was spotless, I love that. I would return again and again. Gracias los Barriles, Baja California and Casa Esplendida!
All the best that Mexico has to offer comes together in Los Barriles. A combination of superlative weather, natural beauty, culture and slower pace of life make this the perfect place to vacation. If you like Mexico and are looking for something more personal than the mega-resort feel of Cabo San Lucas, you'll love the small town atmosphere and sense of safety and community you find here in Los Barriles.
The Mexican state of Baja California Sur occupies the lower half of the Baja California Peninsula from the 28th parallel to the southern tip or “Land’s End”. It is bordered by the state of Baja California to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Sea of Cortez, to the east. Los Barriles is located on the eastern coast in an area referred to as Cabo Este (East Cape) about halfway between Cabo San Lucas and the charming capital of La Paz. Both those cities host international airports, the nearest (SJD) being less than an hour’s drive from Los Barriles.
The amazing diversity of the landscape has given rise to equally amazing and diverse flora and fauna. Between the rocky coast on the Pacific side and the flat sandy beaches of the Sea of Cortez, you'll find Cardón filled deserts, ancient mango groves, and conifer covered mountain ranges. It is estimated that there are over 125 species of plants found only in this region.
This area is extremely popular with bird watchers who seek out Baja California as it is home to six endemic birds. Although many North American Birds can be found in Baja California there are six birds that can be found only in Baja. These Birds are the Cape Pygmy Owl, Xantus's Hummingbird, Gray Thrasher, Belding's Yellowthroat, Baird's Junco, and Cape Robin.
Of course, the two great bodies of water provide constant access to a wide array of sea life. Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the “aquarium of the world.” Whale watching is popular here and while you’re on the water you are also likely to see manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, and whale sharks.
With less than 10” of rain a year, Los Barriles easily qualifies as desert. However, during the fall it is not uncommon to get a good downpour that truly brings the desert to life. Temperatures average between 63º and 84º Fahrenheit making it comfortable year-round.
Shortly after the discovery of southern Baja by Hernan Cortez in 1535, the missionaries arrived. A series of Jesuits, Dominican and Franciscan padres left a trail of rustic and beautiful missions leading up the peninsula. Many of these churches have been lovingly restored and are still active today. Rich mineral deposits also contributed to the development of Baja Sur and brought some interesting people to our remote locale. Now the local economy is fueled by tourism, especially our unparalleled sports fishing, though organic farming is gaining popularity and you can find wonderful mangos, dates, and avocados grown in the nearby town of Santiago.
Los Barriles has a population of roughly 5,000 about half of which are locals and half expatriates here full or part time.
English is commonly spoken but there are lots of opportunities to learn the local language with classes and private tutors.
Electricity is provided by the municipality and staying in touch is not a problem. Local phone service is readily available as is high-speed Internet access that supports voice over IP phone service. Highway 1 runs the full length of the peninsula and since it’s completion in 1972 has been constantly upgraded. You'll also find a full-size grocery store, fresh tortillas at the local tortilleria and if you didn't have any luck on the water, you can buy fresh fish delivered right to your door. Dining options include everything from fish tacos under a shady palapa to gourmet Italian cuisine with linen table cloths. Two banks with English speaking help, 2 gas stations, a medical clinic, a dentist, hardware stores and veterinarian are just some of the services.
The pace of life is relaxed here. You can often stroll the beaches of Los Barriles without encountering a soul or head into one of the local hot spots for some action. If you like the outdoors you'll enjoy the easily accessible and safe beaches for swimming, snorkeling, SUPing, Wind surfing, kiting or kayaking. As mentioned earlier, birding is popular as is hiking, exploring on ATV’s, mountain biking or horseback riding. Los Barriles is known for it's exceptional wind surfing and kiteboarding conditions during the winter months. And, of course, you can take advantage of the world-class sports fishing and surf casting for which we are most famous.
Los Barriles offers the perfect combination of infrastructure and remoteness. Here you can find a comfortable home base for your Baja adventures or an elegant retreat for family and friends. It’s all here. You decide how far you want to leave the world behind.
