Beautiful Oasis

  • 5 of 5

We were in town for a wedding and rented this beautiful house for the weekend. There were 6 of us total, including two children under age 4. We all had a fantastic time! We had zero issues with the house, everything worked well. We enjoyed breakfast on the first floor veranda looking out over the hillside of vines and watching the resident birds and bunnies. The house truly had the feel of a Tuscan home with very high ceilings and high end finishes. Now we are hoping we'll be able to return for a regular vacation someday!

Nice villa although a couple notes

  • 4 of 5

Overall this was a nice villa.

THE GODD: There are 2 larger bedrooms upstairs with king beds and separate bathrooms for each room, 1 smaller bedroom downstairs with 2 twin beds and a bathroom. This worked well for us since we had 3 couples here for the wedding. Our villa had a modest porch, some of the others were quite expansive. We had a view of some of the vines and that was pleasant.

THE BAD: bugs! There were constant fruit flies and house flies, perhaps due to the nearby vineyard. It was not unbearable, just a minor annoyance - I probably drank half a dozen from my wine glass over the course of 2 days. We got some apple cider vinegar and put it by the sink which trapped dozens. Also, the owners had electric fly swatters (guess we should have known that was a hint ;-) ) but I must say the electric fly swatters actually became fun.

THE WARNING: We were here with several others for a wedding at Montaluce. Together we rented 4 villas. We got our security deposit back, but I know at least one other did not. I know the owners complained that they did not clean it well enough, however my wife and I personally helped in the cleaning. I'm sure everyone has their opinion, but I'm just letting you know apparently getting your deposit back is not automatic.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Debbie, first off, we were very embarrassed to learn of the fruit fly, bug problem and sincerely apologize. It turned out that previous guests had done a lot of cooking, and apparently had a lot of fruit left out on the counters instead of keeping in the fridge. Unfortunately, fruit flies are so small and usually only seen when they find food or drink. Our excellent housekeeper, Debbie, was not aware of the problem or would have notified us as well as taken immediate steps to address herself. The fly swatters are provided because some renters leave doors and/or windows open to enjoy the wonderful mountain air...only to realize they are also sharing with the flying insects which also enjoy the vineyard and other appealing aspects of nature. We wish you had let us know when the problem was realized instead of after departing as we would have taken immediate steps to assist in eliminating. Our housekeeper lives close by, and we are there on weekends and I would have come personally to address (usually within minutes). Regardless, when I learned of this, I researched and ordered electric fruit fly/flying insect traps (I avoid using toxic insect poisons in our villas, especially in the kitchens where our guests will be preparing food) and installed in each kitchen before the next renters arrived. They have proven very effective (and safe) and will also take care of any potential future issues. As for the damage deposit being kept on the villa you did not stay in: Thanks for helping them clean up, but they apparently didn't tell you about the very nice floor lamp they had broken (but not reported), or the broken pull down window shade in day bedroom, broken disposal due to screw dropped inside, excessive mud/dirt tracked into living room from patio door, large amounts of chocolate under sofa?, sticky residue (wine, soda, ?) all over floors in kitchen, dining and living room areas, or 4 stained and soiled comforters, and overall excessive cleaning required which warranted our house keeper to charge us double the usual cleaning fee - none of these reported to us by the guests, nor questioned when we kept the deposit. This is the first time in over 3 years we have kept the full damage deposit which was more than justified. I have pictures, and reasons above were filed with VRBO.

This is a gorgeous house. We felt transported to Italy!! There is much attention to detail in the decor and the amenities. The surrounding grounds are beautiful and we highly recommend this villa. Also, make sure you dine at the Montaluce winery restaurant - great views and fabulous food.
