A delightful ten days. We were first time visitors but will be back to both the island to this magical place perched high on the vertiginous slopes above a limitless ocean.
Driving motor cars on the wrong side of the road has always made me anxious but doing it on some of the roads hereabouts was a sort of aversion therapy.
Brian looked after us well and the odd minor snag was rapidly and good humourdly sorted. Everyone we came across was friendly and smiling.
We came for the walking and discovering and we will be back for more as soon as we can.
It was pleasure having you and Sue stay at Casa Serena.
We look forward to your return.
Brian & Catherine
We stayed here for the second time and it was perfect again. The apartment is very clean and comfortable, everything you need was available (coffee, tea, oil, spices etc.). Also, you get a welcome present consisting of a bottle wine and some fresh fruits. Worth mentioning was the breathtaking view! 😍
You can reach the next supermarket by your rental car in 5 minutes, where is a beautiful beach and lot of restaurants too.
Brian and his wife are very friendly and helpful and you can always have a smalltalk. 😊
We are looking forward to see you and Madeira again in 2 years!

Hi Andy & Kathrin

We rented an apartment at Casa Serena for two weeks, but decided to leave after nine days. The apartment was very clean and the view is fantastic, but we found it quite poorly planned with insufficient lights (no lamp above the kitchen sink and only one bedside lamp), poor heating, which we were advised not to use, and a tricky hot water boiler. The only comfortable furniture were the plastic chairs in the balcony.
More important the nearby restaurant, Engenho Velho, and shops mentioned in the description we read were closed and had been for quite a while. We had counted on going out for dinner at night, but driving to Calheta in the dark seemed perilous for someone not used to hairpin curves and steep and narrow roads, so we cooked supper ourselves almost every night.
This could have been OK, but the kitchen lacked basic equipment such as trivets, sharp knives and cutting boards. There was no dish drainer and the frying pan was useless.
Most of the information brochures in the apartment were more than 10 years old and the TV-set probably dates back to 2004.
The trouble is that the description of the apartment perhaps did too. We can see that you have now updated it.
Dear Birgitta & Jan Askeberg,
Thank you for your review, I am a bit confused with your comments especially the word misleading.
Before you left you put a very nice review in our visitors book, also telling us your were leaving early because you wanted to see the east side of the island, so you decided to find a place in the east as Jan was not enjoying the driving in Madeira.
In answer to your comments
Insufficient Lighting There are seven lights in the living area including one over the sink which is in front of a window.
Heaters We have two heaters in the living area, this can be needed to take the temperature up a few degrees in the evening at certain times of the year.
We certainly did not tell you not to use them, but did ask you to switch of before going to bed, also if the apartment was unattended for safety reasons, unfortunately you ignored my request.
Not sure what you meant about hot water boiler as it works automatically.
Seating We have two sofas, three chairs at the inside table ,two at the breakfast bar and two out side, so quiet a choice!.
Shop & Restaurant, the shop is 200 metres up the road from Casa Serena this has never been closed.
The restaurant ( hotel ) has been closed for a short period of time ( under new owner ),also there is a good restaurant at Loreto a short but steep walk.
Road to Calheta Beach is of good quality and would cause not problem for the average driver.
Kitchen fully Equipped chopping board was in the kitchen, knives have been sharpened ,but frying pan is in good condition, there is a built in draining board for the dishes.
Information in Apartment we leave information about lavada walks in the apartment as this can be useful to future guests also about the inland in general.
TV Yes the TV is old and is due for replacement ( soon) ,but as many guests often say to us , the view from the balcony is our TV while we are staying at Casa Serena.
I do not understand your comment on the end of your review, we can see that you have now updated it
I feel that the description is correct to the best of my knowledge, and what you see is what you get.
The last thing I say to new guests at the end of the meet & greet is if there is anything we can help with, please come to our door and ask, unfortunately, you choose to do nothing.
Casa Serena really lives up to it's name and the photos can't convey just how lovely the accommodation and the setting are. On arrival we were given a truly warm welcome by Brian and Catherine. Although they live on site they are not intrusive and always ready with advice and information, nothing was too much trouble and one gets the impression that they sincerely enjoy what they do. The facilities were immaculate, I have often had to clean holiday accommodation before I felt comfortable, but not so here! The kitchen has enough equipment for the dedicated cook. The view from the balcony was stunning and so breakfast each morning was taken there. It was thrilling to watch buzzards wheeling and to hear an amazing dawn chorus accompanied by the cockerels! There is a well-stocked supermarket in Calheta, just a short drive away. Take a phrase book as the locals appreciate attempts with some Portuguese and a few of the shop assistants spoke no English. There is also a little local shop within walking distance. We were left wine and fruit as a welcome pack and Brian and Catherine had gone the "extra mile" by getting some basic items of shopping at our request. We hired a car which we felt was essential to seeing as much of the island as we wanted to in our limited time. The roads can be hair-raising but just take care and allow plenty of room on the bends! If you make the journey to Sao Vicente then the Restaurante Cavello does an amazing omelette, chips and salad for a very reasonable price. We went twice! If it's chilly, eat upstairs and enjoy the view. I can't recommend this accommodation and location highly enough and Brian and Catherine are to be commended for their attention to detail. I hope we can return one day.
Thank you so much for your comments on the standard of your accommodation at Casa Serena and some of the interesting places you visited while on holiday in Madeira..
It is the icing on the cake when people return home and take the time to comment on there experience while staying at Casa Serena, the one important thing for us,is that our guest are leaving after a enjoyable holiday.
Many thanks for your review and I am sure this helps others to make the right choice when booking a holiday

Lovely apartment, very helpful owners
We stayed for three weeks at Casa Serena, Jan 17th to February 6th.
The apartment was superb, very clean and well equipped. Brian and Catherine were extremely helpful with local knowledge. The weather was poor and around us several landslides cut off the main routes to Funchal resulting in having to use the mountain roads, a bit hair-raising at times. Absolutely essential to have a hire car but make certain you check it our before driving off, especially tyre pressures.
We love levada walking but this was also a bit tricky with slippery conditions and mud slides.
We enjoyed good local resaurants,( make a point of going to the "look-out point" just outside Arco Calheta, best coffee on the island, and stunning views.
If you are planning a trip to Madeira we would heartily recommend Casa Serena as a base for exploring the island.
All in all we enjoyed ourselves, but if we returned we would probably opt for March/April.
Mike and Carol Langstaff
Thank you Mike & Carol, for your lovely comments about the apartment.
We are glad you came to escape the very cold winter weather in the UK. Here the weather was a bit mixed ,but there was always some sunshine around for you to enjoy a little relaxation in the garden,(18-21C ).
When in Madeira over the winter, if you choose the higher lavada walks it will be cooler as they get up to 1800m ASL, so best to use the lower lavadas which provide some fantastic walks with scenery to complement whole experience.
We have another main road opening soon this will give you a choice of four different ways to travel round the island or go to Funchal, but you can not beat the old roads ,which are very quiet, to get the feel of the island
These two tourist approved spacious fully equipped holiday rental apartments, in the sunny south west of Madeira, located on the hillside with a fantastic view of the sea and the village of Arco da Calheta with its many banana plantations The apartments are 70m from a local viewpoint, 100m away from the nearest coffee bar.Located above is the village of Loreto with a well- stocked supermarket and a Italian restaurant , the village of Arco da Calheta is a 15 minute walk where you will find a post office, cafe bars, chemist and varies shops.A five minute drive will take you to the village of Calheta with its golden sand beaches and a marina.
