Our property was passed down by my parents who always dreamed of having an ocean front home where our family could gather and special memories would be created. Several years ago, we decided to build a new, open plan home (completed in 2013) on the property and this is the result. It's been fun decorating our home with a few pieces of furniture that have been passed down from one generation to the next. Enjoy our home and the tranquility of Kapoho!
Dale purchased this House in 1983
Why Dale chose Kapoho

Most relaxing vacation ever!!!!!!
The property was amazing! From the moment we arrived, we were in love with the location, the view and the accommodations. The house was clean and had everything we needed but the highlight was the snorkeling and the turtles that we saw daily in the pond. Each night, we sat on the dock and saw three to four turtles in the pond while we enjoyed the evening noises (frogs, birds and waves crashing). It was so nice to just be able to get up and snorkel and swim in the calm waters of the bay and not have to worry about driving anywhere. What a beautiful place to unplug and relax!!! We had such a great time that we booked our return trip before we even left! Mahalo for a great trip, Dale!
Great fish and turtle viewing
We were four adults plus a 6-year old child. This house suited us perfectly. It is steps away from a protected lagoon so swimming was easy and fun. The water is warm and full of sea life. There were plenty of snorkels, masks, floaty devices, to take to the water. One of the best feature shows is an outdoor shower with hot water located right next to the back porch. Perfect. Big ceiling fans in every room kept the air moving and comfortable. The house is In a good location for visiting Hawaii Volcano National Park and other points of interest on the Hilo side of the island. The owner was responsive to questions before our trip and a very thoughtful host. We all had a great week.
The Ocean Is Your Swimming Pool.
The house is lovely: clean, simple, has everything you need. But the location is unbelievably great. Swim and snorkel in calm water right out the back door. Sea turtle in the fish pond. 10-minute walk to open ocean to watch the sunrise. But know that it's remote. While it's in a neighborhood, the community is 10-15 minutes from the nearest stores, restaurants, etc.
Lovely Place to stay. Can't wait to return.
House had everything we needed, especially the rice cooker! Used it every day. We were here 10 days, and rained 7 of those days, but we didn't care because we had a lovely house to stay in and had everything we needed. Swimming and snorkeling was awesome. The most fish I have ever seen snorkeling in Hawaii and the water ous warm.
Loved our stay!!
The house is clean, nice, well-equipped, comfortable (including the beds) and Dale is very helpful (perfect for our extended family of 6), but it's really all about the nature in the backyard that makes it incredible (and the beautiful backyard itself is great too).
We snorkeled every day in the warm water (despite the daily rain) and saw lots of amazing fish (there was a bit of an oily type sheen in the water that, from what I read, was caused by waters of different temperatures mixing...the warm water is so great though...it's worth the slight haziness in areas and I don't know if that haziness is there all the time or was only there because it rained so much). We saw honu (turtles) every morning and evening right by the fish pond. My 7 and 9 year old daughters were thrilled! We also went on a great walk from the house looking for the Champagne pond and ended up walking through a lava field that went to the ocean with a little black/green sand area (and saw lots of birds and frogs and cool houses).
It was also a great location to explore the east side of the island. We took a day trip to Hilo/Akaka Falls/Honomu Goat Dairy Farm (if you like baby goats, don't miss this!). We also took a day trip to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (snorkeled in the morning at the house and then went to the volcano in the afternoon/evening)...so incredible!!
Initially, we flew into Kailua/Kona, stayed on that side a few days, and then drove south to Kona Joe's coffee farm for a tour, then to the Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park, then to the Green Sand Beach and then to the house...that was a long, but beautiful drive and a fun adventure. We arrived at the lock box location late to pick up the keys and thought that it was closed, but it's just the business center behind the lock box area that closes early...the lock box area is open 24 hours, so we stressed out and ended up calling Dale for help. Also, be sure to put the gate opener on the front mirror of your car prior to reaching the gate...the sensor is about 12 feet before the actual gate, so if you wait to put the opener on your mirror like we initially did, the gate won't open.
My only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer! Thanks Dale!
Loved staying here
For a day trip, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. See the explosive lava eruptions captured on film at the Kilauea Visitors Center then drive on down the chain of craters road to see the lava flowing. For the adventurous, drive down on Hwy130, park then hike for 5 miles to see the active lava flowing.
