About Dale

Our property was passed down by my parents who always dreamed of having an ocean front home where our family could gather and special memories would be created.

Several years ago, we decided to build a new, open plan home (completed in 2013) on the property and this is the result. It's been fun decorating our home with a few pieces of furniture that have been passed down from one generation to the next.

Enjoy our home and the tranquility of Kapoho!

Dale purchased this house in 1983

Why Dale chose Puna District

If you are looking for a quiet, oceanfront home to relax, this is it! Create your special memories by coming to our home and enjoying what the Big Island has to offer.

The Most Amazing Place We've Ever Stayed (and we travel a lot)

  • 5 of 5

There is nothing like this place-- anywhere. We are a family of 4, with two older daughters. We love to travel and explore the outdoors (hiking, running, snorkeling). We much prefer nature and the outdoors to resorts and tourist attractions. We picked this place for the secluded setting and backyard that we fell in love with online. When we arrived, our expectations were MORE than exceeded- they were blown away. Dale was wonderful from the very start, staying in communication with us as we arrived at the place and responded very promptly to any questions. And the place was very clean and comfortable, with everything you need. (I noticed one review commented on the hard beds-- this was not the case for us-- I think he may have added a pillow top to the master bed, as it was quite comfortable). But the real gem of this place is the setting and the backyard. Your own private geothermically heated bay in your backyard. Perfect snorkeling (with sea turtles and a variety of tropical fish!) A private gazebo overlooking the bay to rest and relax, eat meals, etc. The sound of frogs and birds at night as you fall asleep. A gated community with gated entrance- feels very safe and secluded. Nothing compares. It was the perfect location for exploring Hilo and the area north of Hilo, as well as Volcanoes National Park (including biking to the lava flow!) The rainforest and vegetation in this part of the island is outstanding. We stayed in a nice, resort condo in the Kohala area after staying at Dale's wonderful place, and it was like culture shock for us. From relaxed and one with nature to the "artificial" Hawaii. If we knew that when we made our plans we would have stayed at Dale's home longer! If you want to be near the touristy stuff or fine dining to eat out every night, this is not your place. But if you love nature and want to experience real Hawaii, this place is perfect! We will definitely come back if we get to visit Hawaii again.

Unforgettable memories in tranquil paradise

  • 5 of 5

I'm not one for superlatives, but WOW. Turtles, tropical fish, frogs and more in a beautiful setting w/ few to no mosquitoes. Our 3 yo was over the moon the entire trip. The house is great and well equipped for marine adventures. Every day was filled w/ memories I'm working hard to preserve . We are well traveled, but this was an unparalleled vacation in paradise. Thank you so much for sharing your home! Like many others, we're hoping to return. Thank you!!

True paradise; snorkeling oasis; turtle haven

  • 5 of 5

The pictures on here just doesn't compare to what the house and views actually are. The kitchen window looks out to the gazebo and snorkeling location. You'll never be more relaxed washing dishes! The master bedroom has the same view! The master bath has a door that leads onto the back deck. Simply amazing. Two other bedrooms with twin beds are well equipped and comfy. The kitchen has everything you'll need. There's snorkeling supplies and beach towels for you to use. They even give you soap to wash your clothes. There were always about half a dozen turtles by the back steps. Geckos are also abundant!

Dale gave us tips to viewing the lava flows and other suggestions for that side of the island. I highly recommend A'kaka Falls and Rainbow Falls, Kapoho Tide Pools (even when raining it's amazing), Champagne Pond, Hilo Farmers Market, Japanese garden in Hilo for lunch and a stroll, Punau'u Black Sand Beach, and Volcano Nt'l Park. Kehena Beach is lovely if you don't mind clothing optional. Gorgeous beach. End of road along the ocean where the old black sand beach was located has a cute store and eating spot. I believe on Wednesday nights they have local vendors with food and wares, live music and dancing, and a full bar. It's a hot, sticky, kind of gathering that is not to be missed if you're a child of the 60's or 70's or feel you should have been. I hate large crowds, but that is a whole lot of fun!

Only downside: beds are hard and not real comfy and living room furniture is a little on the uncomfy side also. HOWEVER, we WILL be back and it pairs in comparison to all the other pluses there are.

This was truly paradise for our family. My son's family never seemed happier. Our granddaughter was never so hyped up than she was there. We could not get her out of the water. It was perfect in every aspect.

Dale - what a treasure to spend time there. This was our 4th stay in Kapoho and this will be the place we return to. The others just were not as special. So grateful that we found this place on VRBO.

Owner's Response: Aloha Kelley and thank you so much for taking the time to write a descriptive review of my home and surrounding area. I'm so glad you and your family had a wonderful time. I will try to obtain a mattress topper for the queen mattress in the master bedroom for those who do not like firm mattresses. I love return visitors so please come back again . Mahalo, Dale

A quiet place to relax and enjoy life

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay here. The neighborhood is so quiet and peaceful. We fell asleep each night to the sounds of the frogs and the ocean. We snorkeled in the backyard. We saw sea turtles and crabs along with all the reef fish. The place was so great we had to drag ourselves away to see the lava or hike in the mountains! The kitchen is well stocked for cooking. The only thing missing was a dishwasher, but that wasn't a big deal to us. The washer and dryer was nice. We loved all the windows to be opened for a nice breeze. The gazebo was a wonderful spot to eat while watching the geckos and birds play. The house was well stocked for any occasion. There is extra snorkeling gear and beach towels. There was even a welcome basket that included macadamia nuts which we LOVED and ended up buying more during our trip. Dale was super responsive and helpful throughout the whole stay. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a relaxing Hawaii vacation. This place is close to the warm baths, tide pools, lava tree state park, volcano national park, and the viewing area for lava flowing into the ocean. Next time we come we will have to take the boat tour to see the lava flowing into the ocean.

wonderful

this is a special spot, serene, beautiful, magical....spent a lot of time exploring the nearby kapoho tidepools, naturally heated by underground volcanic activity. hint--go at high tide for easiest snorkeling.
