Flooding may and does occur in North Hilo and the Big Island. Please use extreme caution when near, swimming or crossing any water ways. 4x4 or jeep is recommended for exploring back road areas on the island and to get to my place. 4x4 is required to access Waipio Valley, Green Sands Beach and Mauna Kea. Book a cheap car and ask for a jeep when you arrive to get good rates on jeeps. Aloha and be safe !
Iv enjoyed the Big Island now for 31 years. Now its time to share my paradise with those who want to see.
Keith Robinson purchased this house in 2001
The most beautiful and private location on the Hamakua Coast I could find.
The Sunrise or Full moon rise out of the ocean from the upstairs King bed is the most peaceful romantic view you will ever see ...
Where to start? Our first day we arrived earlier than expected and we told Keith that we were not checking in, but we just wanted to make sure we could find the place for our 4pm check in. Keith was very gracious and let us leave our bags at the house. Unfortunately there was construction going on, sawing and hammering. My husband and I went to explore the island and got back to the house around 6pm. Keith then went through the check in information which was very thorough. Lots of rules. Everyone is asked to remove their shoes. My husband noticed the fire pit on the deck and asked how to turn it on. Keith then told us that he charges $5.00 per day to use it. The next day as I was taking a shower, the construction worker was about 50 yards from the house and was able to see me taking a shower because there were no curtains on the bathroom window. One night the generator power got low, and I turned it on to recharge it. I fell asleep and in the morning Keith approached us on our way out and was miffed that we had inadvertently let it run out of gas. He berated us like recalcitrant children and told us that had he been in Kona it would have been a three hour trip to replace the gas, and he would charge us for the gas. First of all, we are not children, we would have noticed there was no power and checked the generator. Finding it without gas, we would have filled it up. There would have been no call to Keith. We gave him $10.00 for three gallons of gas that cost 2.71 cents per gallon. We have rented houses in other countries and have been responsible enough to take care of things. Keith was on the property for our entire stay, and his wife came on the weekend. Usually, the owner gives you a tour, explains the rules and gives you your privacy. This was to be my 60th birthday trip. It was not relaxing, and hardly enjoyable, especially with people walking around and working all day. I must admit, the property was beautiful and it would have been much more pleasurable with privacy. Please know that there are now 3 other cabins that can be rented out during your stay. If you are looking for seclusion, look somewhere else.
What an adventure! We stayed as a family of 4 for 4 days and wish we could have spent more time at this out of the way paradise! The view alone is worth the trek out to the homestead. Definitely recommend a vehicle with 4WD or high clearance, but well worth it if you can get to this gem. This is a great respite between Hilo and the North Side and a good mid point if you are heading up to Mauna Kea. The description is off the grid and that's accurate, but don't be scared off because all the modern amenities exist in this quaint home. Oh and did I mention the private waterfalls? Yes- the cold mountain streams run alongside this property and provide access to a couple of fairy easily accessible swimmable pools with waterfalls. With two teenage boys we found it very relaxing and everyone enjoyed the hospitality that our caretaker and owner showed us. Definitely recommend staying here if you want peace and quiet and a central location between Hilo and Waimea.
My wife, 8yr old daughter and I stayed here for a few days in August 2014 it was great (except for the mosquitoes). The cottage is powered by generator and the only time you really notice is when taking a shower trying to get the temp right. The house was very nicely done inside I think the fridge could have been colder. We had a great time with the horses and peacocks. the deck was great (again except for the bug bites), swimming the waterfall pools was great. Keith was a great host and very helpful. There was other guests in the small cabin but it's like having neighbors. If you like the outdoor style with a nice view and great hiking, swimming this place is great. There are some nice site to see nearby and food at the local diner was great as well. My daughter loved playing darts every day and feeding and petting the horses.
Stayed in the main cabin for six nights and loved the unique characteristics that you can’t find in other vacation rentals, including horses, onsite waterfalls, natural swimming pools, and peacocks. We had intense rain for the first few days, which necessitated a Jeep 4x4 to get in to the property through the back roads (an adventure in itself), but the rain also created the most robust and exciting waterfalls just steps from the house. Hiking through the very private waterfalls and streams was our favourite experience in Hawaii, a true testament given we were on a three week vacation and created many wonderful memories throughout. The owner, Keith has a contagious passion for and extensive knowledge of the Big Island, making him as much of an attraction as what you’ll find in any guide book - so make sure you take him up on his sight-seeing suggestions. We had an amazing day of fishing out of Kona and caught a baby blue marlin (happily for me it will live to see another day). Keith also pointed us to the most gorgeous beaches on the island, which are not marked on the maps that you’ll get from the car rental agencies or airlines. The house is lovely, kitchen up-to-date and provides spectacular views throughout. It’s an off-grid home, which delivers seclusion and will teach you a bit about generator living and on-demand water heating. Would definitely return and recommend to all of our friends!
I'd be happy to come back, and maybe next time even bring a group of friends. The cabin is about 30 min. north of Hilo (If you're coming from Hilo I'd recommend you do your grocery shopping there before you leave the town). Wide open space, nice breezes, complete with the company of chickens, peacocks and horses, as well as orange, avocado and starfruit trees (also mango but it wasn't the season). Lots of exploring to do with a bunch of nearby waterfalls. There was another couple staying in the smaller studio cabin on the property, but the place still felt pretty private. Keith was an excellent host, easy to communicate with, and we had a blast hanging out with him on his fishing boat in Kona. I'd absolutely recommend the place, especially if you love being in a country setting.
