About Mary McDonald
My name is Mary and while I grew up and went to school in southern California, I moved to the Bay Area in my early 20's and never really looked back. I bought the Elmwood house and cottage 20 years ago and have lived there ever since. Before I retired, I took the opportunity to reimagine my garden space to better accommodate visiting cottage tenants while maintaining a private area for myself. I have a 6-year-old granddaughter and year-old grandson who live nearby and I wanted a space they would enjoy being in, too. I have a small studio in my part of the garden where I enjoy dabbling in art projects. I am a huge lover of the Elmwood area of Berkeley. The tree-lined streets are shaded in the summer and ablaze with color in the fall. There is a vibrant mix of UC Berkeley students and families in the shops and restaurants nearby and I appreciate being able to walk to do my errands or take BART. The walk score of 94 says it all.

A wonderful retreat
The property is absolutely true to its listing. Everything needed was there.
The location is perfect for access to down town, the university, food and supermarket.
Mary ( and her son while she was away) were responsive to queries with zero fuss.
Couldn't have found a better place to stay for what we needed.
Mary's Elmwood Cottage
We loved our stay at Mary's Elmwood cottage. My husband and I were visiting Berkeley to await the arrival of our first grandchild, and we couldn't have been happier spending our days in Mary's gorgeous, sunny, and charming cottage. It is a beautifully-designed space filled with natural light, and it seems to capture the essence of Carmel, Nantucket, and our beloved Elmwood all rolled into one. It is cozy, comfortable, (that bed!) and beautifully appointed with thoughtful details throughout. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking essentials, the bookshelves were filled with interesting books and artwork, and the private patio was a quiet and lovely retreat. The property is beautifully landscaped, and the cottage overlooks Mary's gorgeous garden. The location is in a lovely neighborhood in the heart of Elmwood and around the corner from wonderful cafes and shops.
Mary is a lovely, beyond accommodating, and most gracious host. She treated us to delicious homemade strawberry rhubarb jam and a lovely bottle of wine upon our arrival, and she made us feel most welcome during our stay. We cannot wait to come back.
Quiet well appointed cottage with a lovely garden area.
Loved being able to walk to restaurants, grocery stores and numerous shops on College Street.
Thank you, Nancy!
Our Winter Respite
This was the 4th winter that we spent 3 months in Mary's cottage. Life couldn't be better for us there. It is our perfect place to get away from Seattle's rainy, cold, windy winter. We will return next winter.
Thanks so much, Bill and Jeanne!! You are always welcome here!
Very enjoyable stay.
My husband & I spent 5 days at the cottage recently and really enjoyed our stay. Charming cottage with a beautiful garden outside. Mary is available if something is needed but not intrusive at all.
My son lives nearby and I am hoping to return soon.
Thanks, Diane! Hope to see you again soon in Berkeley!
Idyllic Cottage in Charming, Convenient Neighborhood.
My husband and I loved staying in Mary's cottage and would recommend it in a heartbeat. Located on a lovely block just around the corner from Elmwood's best spots, the cottage is part of a larger property that's beautifully landscaped and serene. There were really excellent scones waiting for us, and plenty of Keurig coffee (Peet's!). The cottage was thoughtfully designed, well-appointed, and immaculate. It was also stocked with great books, toiletry products and kitchen basics. The bed was incredibly comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. This would be a great place for a solo writer's retreat or couple's getaway, or a point of operations for a small family. We're grateful to have found it.
Location, location, location! Ideally situated halfway between the UC Berkeley Campus and the Rockridge BART Station, this cottage has easy access to all that College Avenue has to offer residents and visitors: restaurants from moderately priced ethnic eateries to Zagat-rated fine dining to prepared food take-out and pizza; wine shops and delicatessans; a butcher and greengrocer; a French bakery with the rustic baguette voted best in the Bay Area. There is a movie theater and bookstore, lots of shops and boutiques. The Walk Score of 94 says it all!
This is a convenient location for visitors to the UC Berkeley campus as well as for vacationers in the Bay Area. With the Rockridge BART station less than a mile away, trips to explore San Francisco are fast and easy.
