About LAURA BUTSCH
We are a family with our permanent home in St. Louis and had been skiing at Durango Mountain Resort (AKA Purgatory). We fell in love with the Durango area and people in the town. We had searched many areas in the west for our vacation property: Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and California. Durango was the right fit with many outdoor activities all year round. Rafting the Animas River, fishing in the San Juan, touring Silverton, Telluride, Pagosa Springs, and the Mesa Verde Cliff Dwellings is wonderful. The local restaurants are some of the best in the U. S. with a wide variety of international flavors and the best French bakery anywhere. There are many ski resorts within a 1.5-2 hour drive. Purgatory is only 30 minutes.
LAURA BUTSCH purchased this Cabin in 2013
Why LAURA BUTSCH chose Durango
Genuine historic log cabin with huge rock fireplace on 13 acres and National Forest all around is what attracted us to this particular property. It was a rehab project, that we have spent 18 months working on. There are brand new hardwood floors, a completely renovated kitchen, lovely bathrooms, lots of log furniture, antlers, deer hides/heads, leather, and some Ute Indian/tribal influences in the decor.
What makes this Cabin unique
Views are AMAZING! You can see the Animas Mountain in front of the home and rows of mountains in the back. Turtle Lake is just across and down the road. Turtle Lake Valley is one of the most beautiful in La Plata County. Enjoy the large decks, sunroom, side porch and landscaped yard. Hiking trails are out the back door! Our private trails connect with the Log Chute Trail System and the Colorado Trail. The Durango Boulder Garden borders our property, as well as the National Forest. If you are planning a wedding, reunion, or special event, it is a perfect spot, with open areas, woods, mountains, decks, and a large cross in the rock garden. Our neighbor to the east is a photographer and neighbor across the road is an event planner to help you plan the perfect ceremony. EVENT SITE FEES APPLY!! (Minimum is $200 for 4 hours; Maximum is $500 for 10 hours. Limit of 75 persons.)

Best snowy cabin in the mountains
Took the fam to Durango for spring break and a play in the snow. Pleasantly surprised with the wonderful cabin and the awesome remote quiet location while only a few minutes from town. We explored around the property, had a snow ball fight, enjoyed the warm fireplace and the lovely cabin. Laura was super helpful and supportive and quick with any questions we had not only about the house but also restaurant suggestions in town. The lack of electronic distractions was very refreshing. Don’t worry. There’s plenty of board games and other things to do.
The snow was exactly what we needed and the train was just like I had remembered it as a kid. I think we’ll plan to return for a summer trip next time and stay here and explore all the ATV and 4x4 trails in the area. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.
Fantastic mountain getaway!
Very comfortable and cozy cabin that feels like it is very secluded yet is just minutes from town! I would definitely recommend this place for families as our kids had a blast!
rustic, warm, plenty large for us, good beds, out of town, quiet, hiking nearby
There were 10 of us, and we had a good time being together for Thanksgiving. We took all our food with us. We slept on all available beds, including the cot in the outbuilding. We did go hiking, and we drove into town one afternoon to stroll around. The only question we had about the property is this: where is the stereo equipment mentioned in the house description? We couldn't find it! Toward the end of our short stay there, there were some problems with plumbing, but the owner was responsive. Such a relaxing place and lovely countryside.
Thank you so much for submitting this review and for staying with us. I appreciate your comment about the stereo, which had been clarified in the details as an “I Pod portable speaker.” (Somehow it disappeared over the summer... One of the hazards of owning a rental property.) I have now removed that from our amenities. I very much appreciate your calling this to our attention so that future guests may not be misled. We truly try to remain an unplugged cabin in the country where families can come together for games, reading, conversation, and enjoying nature.
This property is beautiful! Beautifully decorated and the setting is amazing and peaceful.
This is such a beautiful property. We really enjoyed not having internet and TV so we could really unplug. Loved the hike right behind the house and the kids had a blast on the tire swing. While secluded it is still really close to town. Was great to have easy access to the grocery store and local restaurants. This property doesn’t have AC so take whatever measures you must if you need it to be cool to sleep. We were here in mid July and it was toasty. The owners are incrediblely nice and responsive!
Thank you for staying with us and submitting your review. Indeed, it was an unusually hot and dry summer. Typically, it cools down to the high 50s or 60s at night, making for perfect sleeping weather. It is typical in Durango to not have central air conditioning. However the cool nights didn’t happen this year during several weeks in July. We will be purchasing window units for next summer!
Our family really loved this cabin!
Our family travels to Durango quite often and we always stay in a different cabin. This cabin is beautiful, peaceful, comfortable and clean! The sleep hut was a huge hit. Enjoying coffee early in the morning on the deck was my favorite time of the day. We certainly found it hard to leave but when we did the bagpipes someone was playing off in the distance was a nice farewell! I would recommend this cabin in a heartbeat and the owner, Laura is a delight to talk with and is very easy to reach if there is a question. I can't wait to go back!!
Amazing property to spend time with family and unplug from technology.
This property was perfect for our family reunion. We climbed the mountain behind the house a few times, had a fire in the fire pit every night...our teenage boys loved the bunk house. Very rustic house...with lots of space. There is no WiFi and very little cell service and although we were worried it was nice to be unplugged. And as a bonus there were two dogs from neighboring houses that visited us and played with the kids and hiked with us! We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to have our family reunion.
Near Mesa Verde, Pagosa Springs, the Durango-Silverton Railroad (most scenic in the USA), Colorado Trail, Cascade Falls, Trimble Hot Springs, Durango Mountain Resort (open for activities all year!), Ziplines, Animas River and whitewater adventures, and everything outdoors!!!!!!
