Luis Gomez, a Yucatan Peninsula native, arrived to the small town of Cancun in August 1982, a place of white sands, turquoise beaches and opportunity. Always a dreamer and entrepreneur, Luis’s first business was a restaurant and bar, then a boutique, an ice cream shop called Los Pinguinos (The Penguins), and finally, in 1984 he launched his own Editorial Company, Dive Mexico, dedicated to the production and distribution of postcards, tourist guides, books and souvenirs.
In the year 2000, Luis bought land in Puerto Morelos and began his dream of building a home away from home, beach resort and dive center.
With the help of his girlfriend Isabel Maria, and his son Robert who both got their PADI Divemaster certification, “The Diving Lodge” finally opened its doors in 2012.
It seems that it is an on going piece of art, as Luis is relentless with every detail and always enhancing and adding new decks, art and his personal touch as you can see in most rooms.
In 2013 Luis’s daughter Briana and his son Robbie began to add to the amenities of The Diving Lodge by creating a yoga and meditation space, a bar and lounge, and a beach-front shop called, The Sand Traveler’s Boutique.
Changing the approach from vacation rental to bed and breakfast, brother and sister are eager to provide guests with an unforgettable vacation experience.
We could not have been happier with our stay at the diving lodge. Luis and Isabel were very gracious hosts! They did everything possible to accommodate us and make us feel welcome! We left the diving lodge after five days and went to tulum. We genuinely wish we'd stayed at the diving lodge! We will absolutely return to stay here again!
Incredibly quiet and relaxing considering the area it's in - between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which are anything but quiet!
The small town of Puerto Morelos about 10 mins down the road by car (1 hr walk along the beach) is exactly my kind of town. Plenty of tourists mingling with the locals, but they are an older group and pretty laid back. There are still a half-dozen or so real bars in town, all within a 2 block radius and a nice assortment of music on the weekends and some during the week as well. But it's still super quiet and chill.
There are just a handful of "cabins" on the property and it seems that there is a good chance you might have the place to yourself. The layout is awesome and super inviting. Didn't use the pool very much because it was pretty chilly. But the cabins are super ventilated and they were cool and relaxing without the AC (very important for us) all day long.
If you have a bigger group (4 or more) or there are other people around, then the staff will serve a Mexican breakfast. We had it for the first 3 days and it was incredible. Highly recommend it!
This place is the opposite experience of the mega-all-inclusive-resorts found throughout the area. Don't come here if you are needy or expect to be catered to. But if you want peace and quiet and an authentic Mexican experience, this is where you should be.
The only downside is that you pretty much need a car. I guess you could catch a bus or taxi if you walk 10 mins down the road to most places, and I would consider that next time depending on what sites I wanted to see in the area. Speaking of which Fox and Hertz rental cars at the Cancun airport are both horrible. Someone said Enterprise is better.
We have been home for just over a week, and have had a chance for our wonderful Mexico experience to sink in. First of all, you couldn't ask for more gracious, accommodating hosts than Isabel and Luis. We were very excited and a bit anxious about this trip - excited because of all the reviews for this property / anxious because we'd never been to Mexico and we were renting a car. We had a loose schedule with several dives planned, but the day before we left, Robbie emailed us to let us know that the marina would be closed the first three days of our trip - oh NO!! But, when we got the the Diving Lodge, Luis suggested we do a cenote dive (COOL!) But the cenote we were going to was Dos Ohos (uh...wasn't that the one featured in the Southwest Magazine article I read on the way down?? Sounds popular/crowded 😒 Turns out, we got there AFTER the crowd!! And it was lovely and amazing! My two teen-aged boys, my niece-in-law, and I took the Discover Scuba class on Tuesday - AWESOME EXPERIENCE! Then, snorkeling on Wednesday. The thing was, we were a group of 13 coming from all parts of the US. Some days we weren't sure what we were doing until the day we did it - we would talk with Luis and Isabel that morning and it would happen. This was such a unique experience. I have friends who have stayed at all inclusive resorts in Mexico and one comment that sticks in my mind..."Like a cruise ship on land." I DEFINITELY didn't want that. This felt like we were experiencing Mexico. The sun rises were breathtaking - delicious coffee and pastries - followed by luscious fruit and a wonderful breakfast all with beautiful blue water steps away. It was paradise!
We had a wonderful 8 days with this family....breakfasts were delicious and catered to us, diving was AWESOME, the place had hide away spots, outdoor cooking, outdoor stunning, swimming, funky eating areas....we did cenotes, snorkeling, diving and sight seeing!!! They showed us so much love!!!!
Can't say enough good things about the property and the owners. Isabel and Luis were very welcoming hosts even though we arrived very late at night. The villas were spotless and beds very comfortable. Isabel even baked a delicious banana based heart shaped cake in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary. A special place with exceptional hosts!
Our stay was at the very beginning of December (2016) and we had an absolutely fantastic time. I rarely write reviews, but Isabel and Luis and their beautiful lodge were so wonderful I felt like I needed to!
The weather was perfect, low to mid eighties during the day, sunny, and cooled down a bit during the night for good sleeping weather.
We stayed in the C a s i t a d e l M a r and it was exactly what we were looking for. Big beautiful bedroom, comfy large bed (this is a big deal for my husband as he is tall and gets headaches if the bed isn't of good quality), nice sized kitchen, good bathroom, and a large wrap-around screened in porch for eating and relaxing. We tend to "eat in" more, so we cooked quite a lot and found everything we needed for utensils, pots, etc. Another thing we had been worried about was air conditioning for the bedroom, not knowing how hot it would be at night. The air conditioner upstairs was perfect and cooled the bedroom wonderfully.
The location of the lodge is a bit out of town, but this is something that we preferred. We wanted some peace and quiet, but didn't want to be too far away, and this location was just exactly what we were looking for. It's located nearby a few smaller resorts, so there was beach traffic and fun things to see, but was far enough away to have some nice and quiet beach time. The beach itself was perfect, very clean water and sand, and our hosts always had chairs and cushions ready for sun-bathing. The pool is right at the edge of the property, so you can sit and look out at the ocean while you swim, just beautiful!
The "common space" of the lodge is decorated in true beach style and is in fantastic condition. With a pool table, sitting area, bar, games, etc. It is all open (though could be closed for rain), so you could hang out in lighted areas at night, great for groups or just a couple like us.
Finally, our hosts, who really made the trip for us! Isabel was always checking in on us and making sure we had what we needed, she even made us some yummy baked goods! Luis was a great host as well! We felt that they had the perfect mixture of making sure we were taken care of, but also letting us do as we pleased. We've been many places before and have learned that you can have the best location in the world, but if your hosts aren't great it ruins the whole thing. Luis and Isabel were spectacular, and we would definitely recommend them to anyone!
