Luis Gomez, a Yucatan Peninsula native, arrived to the small town of Cancun in August 1982, a place of white sands, turquoise beaches and opportunity. Always a dreamer and entrepreneur, Luis’s first business was a restaurant and bar, then a boutique, an ice cream shop called Los Pinguinos (The Penguins), and finally, in 1984 he launched his own Editorial Company, Dive Mexico, dedicated to the production and distribution of postcards, tourist guides, books and souvenirs.
In the year 2000, Luis bought land in Puerto Morelos and began his dream of building a home away from home, beach resort and dive center.
With the help of his girlfriend Isabel Maria, and his son Robert who both got their PADI Divemaster certification, “The Diving Lodge” finally opened its doors in 2012.
It seems that it is an on going piece of art, as Luis is relentless with every detail and always enhancing and adding new decks, art and his personal touch as you can see in most rooms.
In 2013 Luis’s daughter Briana and his son Robbie began to add to the amenities of The Diving Lodge by creating a yoga and meditation space, a bar and lounge, and a beach-front shop called, The Sand Traveler’s Boutique.
Changing the approach from vacation rental to bed and breakfast, brother and sister are eager to provide guests with an unforgettable vacation experience.
The Diving Lodge is a very special place, and far exceeded our expectations. Luis and Isabel, the owners and dive masters, really know how to make people feel welcome, comfortable and special. We brought our entire family of 11 to the lodge. We booked the entire lodge for our three grandchildren, ages two and half to four and half, their two sets of parents and our 20 and 30 something single sons. Each family had their own private casita for sleeping and napping but the sweet spot was the beautiful pool and hot tub, known to the grandkids as the big pool and "tiny" pool. The white sand beach was literally, steps down from the pool deck, and the warm waters of the Gulf was a mere 15 feet from there.
We had the lodge prepare all of our meals, and they were truly delicious. All food was fresh, and authentic regional cuisine. Breakfast started at 8 with coffee and pastry followed by a wonderful warm and different entree everyday. Breakfast and dinner were served in their very comfortable, dining room where everyone also enjoyed the pool table. Lunch was generally served outside at the "boat" table, a fun use for an old sunfish. We planned both lunch and dinner menus in advance of arriving and were never disappointed. Isabel went out of her way to accommodate our family members who are vegetarian.
I have been diving since high school but had never taught our children. The Diving Lodge offers an adventure dive training program, and all four young men participated. The instruction was excellent, and then we did two tank dives on the beautiful reef. Snorkeling was great too.
We had nothing but compliments from all our kids on the accommodations, food, beach, pool, diving and, of course, our wonderful hosts.
The Diving Lodge property, itself, was exceptionally clean, well maintained, and the casitas were quite comfortable.
Isabel and Luis are fantastic hosts, and deliver the GOODS at the "Diving Lodge" in Puerto Morelos. We will return - and they are just 30 minutes from the Cancun airport but a million miles from the hustle and bustle.
If you love diving, being a bit away from a great town, and privacy, this is the place for you. There are 4 villas, plus the Gomez residence.
- great beach, with few passers-by
- ability to get scuba training on-site
- can arrange for scuba or snorkel trips from the villas. (WOW! The high point of our trip!)
- near Puerto Morelos, which is a great beach town with lots of great restaurants.
- long, sand road
- if you are driving, it looks like you are going down a service road, which zigs and zags all over.
- 45 minute walk, 10 - 15 minute drive to town.
We would definitely stay again!
This year we decided to plan a large family vacation, (4 generations). We wanted to head somewhere warm, with a sandy beach and oceanfront if possible. We found this amazing dive shop and villas on VRBO and thought it sounded great, but couldn't have imagined it would be as wonderful as it was! Each of our families had their own private villa. There was a spacious outdoor kitchen for us to cook all of our meals, a dining room and rec area with pool table and hammock, not to mention a private pool and we were literally steps away from the beach. THIS PLACE IS OUTSTANDING!!!! Isabel and Louis were the best hosts and treated us like family. We had the best breakfasts every morning with authentic mexican cuisine. They even catered a special meal daily for my sister who is vegan, which was totally unexpected and incredibly thoughtful and delicious.
We never felt unsafe and it was great that we were able to let our kids run around outside within the complex and swim all they want. This is an incredibly private property, with incredible views and accommodations.
Louis, Isabel and Gerry took us on an incredible snorkeling tour to explore the coral reef, which was nothing like we've ever seen! They also helped us arrange other excursions and helped make reservations for some local popular restaurants.
I highly recommend the Dive Shop at Puerto Morales. We are already planning our next trip next year to come back to this secret gem.
We booked this vacation as a four generation spring break get away from the Seattle area. We had 11 people in our party and booked 4 villas. This is a private get away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun to the beautiful quaint village of Puerto Morelos. The Dive Lodge is right on the beach, it is truly paradise. Isabel and Luis treat you like family. They cooked breakfast for us every morning. Took us snorkeling and arranged deep sea fishing and dinner reservations in town. It was hard to leave and go back to reality. We hope to come back soon. You owe it to yourselves to book a vacation get away at the Dive Lodge.
My college-freshman daughter and I flew from opposite coasts of the US to meet for her spring break, and our main goal was to relax on a beach and not see any other American college students on their spring break. We were extremely happy at The Diving Lodge. Isabel, Luis and Elvira were so friendly yet respected our desire for solitude, and the grounds and buildings were gorgeous. We were stunned that we were the only guests during our 4 day stay.
We were trying to be on a bit of a budget, and we took an ADO bus from the Cancun airport to the stop at the highway. We easily found a taxi, but the driver was not familiar with The Diving Lodge and couldn't really figure out where it was from the directions we had. A phone call solved the problem, and Isabel told us later to tell taxi drivers it is just past "Ocean Coral y Turquesa" and this proved very useful information for future cab rides. When we arrived, they asked us to switch rooms to the Casa del Sonador, as there was some minor construction in front of the Casita del Mar which we had booked. The room was perfect, and had a full kitchen we used for breakfast and the one dinner we ate there. (Isabel made us a wonderful "welcome" breakfast the first morning, and there are more meal options for larger groups.) We had a great snorkeling trip with our very competent guide Gerry (again, just the 2 of us, and our own guide-how great is that?). And my daughter got her cat fix from the resident cat Misty.
The town of Puerto Morelos was just what we were looking for--several good restaurants, some shopping, and fairly quiet. We also enjoyed walking the streets of the "real" town, the part just off the highway a mile or 2 inland from the ocean.
The only negative I can think of is that it is fairly far into town--and although the information posted online is very clear about this distance, 200 peso cab rides into town to shop or eat can add up. Twice we walked along the beach into town, which is pleasant, but it is an hour. In hindsight, I wish we had considered biking into town; the bikes were right there in plain sight, I just didn't think of it. But this distance from town is a small trade off for an empty tranquil beach.
We highly recommend The Diving Lodge. The place and people are wonderful. You won't be disappointed.
What a fantastic trip. Isabel and Luis are gracious hosts and Robbie spent extra time ensuring we knew how the costs were broken out, because a portion of our group had to leave early. The Lodge surpassed our expectations and we found that no matter where you look, their attention to detail was evident. We were attending a wedding at a neighboring "all-inclusive" resort and could not have been happier to return to the peace of the lodge, with sounds of the surf and breeze to nod off to. We found the walk from town (~1 hour) to be refreshing especially after dinner and drinks. The breakfasts prepared by Elvira and Isabel were wonderful. We did some preliminary shopping and prepared other meals on our own in the well equipped outdoor kitchen. Fortunately, we took advantage of a mid-day snorkeling trip and would highly recommend it. Numerous brightly colored fish, coral, and even a sea turtle made this short excursion a highlight of the trip.
Can't say enough about the warmth of the hosts, and the Incredible value the Lodge offers. We are already looking for another excuse to visit, next time for more than 4 days!
