About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I am a Michigan native and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. My family spent summers in Charlevoix, but now my four children are grown and spread across the country from Virginia to Washington. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Charlevoix

I have been a homeowner in Charlevoix for over twenty five years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history and character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

Notes:
The house will accommodate five in beds, however I do not recommend more than four adults. The second bedroom located upstairs is small with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional full-size sleeper sofa in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading, looking out the picture window at Lake Michigan, or gazing at a blazing fire.

Just the two of us after 50 years

  • 5 of 5

Our 4 children wanted us to do something BIG for our 50th wedding anniversary. A special trip with our four children and grandchildren to San Antonio. San Antonio holds many memories for us, being on the Riverwalk, Mariachis serenading us at Mi Tierra restaurant. Or a big party in Chicago where we are from and have so many family and friends.

But it hit me, we started out just the two of us. that's what I wanted. something for just the two of us. I remembered seeing the Hobbit House. I thought it looked perfect online.

But it was more than perfect in person. It was magical, like a fairy tale. Every detail made me smile. the small kitchen with its just right pots, pans, which we never used. The furniture in the living room, which we used alot, two comfortable recliners in front of a unique fireplace. The perfect bedroom, with the beautiful wall picture of two birds. Lovebirds. The bed and pillows were not too soft, not too hard, perfect. The color of the blue ceiling and the orange creamsicle walls was like an illustration in a childrens book. We probably spent more time in the house than we did exploring Charlevoix. A fairy tale house. I loved the whole experience. And what a perfect house it was for our 50th wedding anniversary.

A Thanksgiving Holiday in a Magical House

  • 5 of 5

We spent the Thanksgiving holiday in Half House. For all the years we have driven by the little house, it was delightful to get to stay in it. It is small but you have everything you need and the quick trip across the street to Lake Michigan was so convenient. It is so easy to walk to restaurants and shopping you don't need your car. We can't wait to go back again.

One of a kind home!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at this home and we will be back again. We have rented many rental homes and this is one of the best. The owners obviously take pride in their home and do not just use left-over furnishings from their primary home. The new fridge and couch are adorable. The home is so cozy and the location is the best - you can walk downtown and to the beach. The little movie theater in town is adorable. If you rent this home, you will love it. There is nothing negative that I can say.

A Wonderful Weekend at a Magical Home

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay at this fabulous home (and we will be back!) It was immaculate and had all of the comforts of home. We also brought our 5 year old black lab. She absolutely loved her surroundings. I believe that some of the people taking pictures of the home were amused that our dog was sitting in front screen door protecting "her" home.

We loved sitting in the front of the house and look at the beauty of Lake Michigan. We also felt like "stars" since this was a tourist attraction. We met many wonderful people , that specifically came to Charlevoix to see "The Mushroom Homes" . Many of these people did not realize that someone could actually rent this great place. If you have the time, the owners have a DVD on the history of The Mushroom Homes and the builder Earl Young.

Bill was very responsive to our queries and would not hesitate to recommend this enchanting home.

Very cute and cozy little place

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and daughter in law stayed here with me for our annual wine tasting weekend. It was a very nice and cozy little place to stay. We loved the fireplace and the feel of staying at home. The main queen bed was very comfortable, while the twin beds upstairs were not, girls had sore backs after sleeping. But it was nice to have our own kitchen to use and all of the appliances. The shower had great water pressure, a little short on the size but it's a small house! The price was very pricey but it was once in a life time experience.

Owner's Response: Jill, thank you so much for the five-star review! I honestly have never slept on the beds upstairs. No one has ever mentioned it before. I’ll give them a try on my next visit. ~Bill
