About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I was raised in Michigan and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. My family spent summers in Charlevoix, but now I live in Texas and my four children are grown and scattered across the country from Virginia to Washington. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this Cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Charlevoix

I have been a homeowner in Charlevoix for over twenty five years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located directly across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this Cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history and character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

The second bedroom located upstairs is small with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional full-size sleeper sofa in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading, looking out the picture window at Lake Michigan, or gazing at a blazing fire.

A special trip with our four children and grandchildren to San Antonio. San Antonio holds many memories for us, being on the Riverwalk, Mariachis serenading us at Mi Tierra restaurant. Or a big party in Chicago where we are from and have so many family and friends.

But it hit me, we started out just the two of us. that's what I wanted. something for just the two of us. I remembered seeing the Hobbit House. I thought it looked perfect online.

But it was more than perfect in person. It was magical, like a fairy tale. Every detail made me smile. the small kitchen with its just right pots, pans, which we never used. The furniture in the living room, which we used alot, two comfortable recliners in front of a unique fireplace. The perfect bedroom, with the beautiful wall picture of two birds. Lovebirds. The bed and pillows were not too soft, not too hard, perfect. The color of the blue ceiling and the orange creamsicle walls was like an illustration in a childrens book. We probably spent more time in the house than we did exploring Charlevoix. A fairy tale house. I loved the whole experience. And what a perfect house it was for our 50th wedding anniversary.

We went 1st week of April and got hit with a snowstorm on Tuesday, but we stayed snug and warm in the house and they came & cleared a path for us Wednesday morning after the storm was over. We had a fire every night--great fireplace. Loved, loved, loved the view out the front window looking out onto Lake Michigan. Close to town. Walked to Boulder Park everyday for a stroll on the beach and my daughter found lots of Petoskey stones. A short drive to many different wineries. We cooked several meals here and found everything we needed to fix a meal. The only thing I didn't think to pack that they didn't have was a hair dryer. It was a little weird at first to have all the cars stopping to take pictures of the house, but we were used to it by the end of our stay. Would definitely stay here again! Enjoyed it very much.

Our family absolutely loved this house! It was the perfect cozy get away we were looking for. It is a truly unique place to stay with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, easy access to the beach and to downtown Charlevoix. Our stay was in February and our family had a wonderful time exploring the ice on Lake Michigan, hiking the snow covered trails of the nearby recreation area and seeing the blue ice mountains on the shoreline for the first time despite being life long Michiganders. The home owner was accommodating, easy to communicate with and thoughtful in making sure we were prepared for our stay in his beautiful home.

                                                                  Camilla L.Farmington Hills

Staying in an Earl Young "hobbit house" was a fun experience. The house is full of character and Young's signature stonework, including the fireplace. (Owner provides firewood and fatwood kindling.) The kitchen is tiny, but well-equipped, including a dishwasher. Wi-Fi worked great. The location is an easy walk to "downtown" Charlevoix , the beautiful public library, and other Earl Young homes in the area. The house overlooks Lake Michigan, although in the summer trees and other foliage might obstruct the view. The house sleeps 4, but it is VERY tiny and better accommodates two unless all four of you REALLY like each other!

This little House is cute, cosy, and charming.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at the half house. It’s the perfect size for a couple or small family of four. Within a walking distance of Charlevoix shops and restaurants by far enough for peace and quiet. The view out across the lake and lighthouse is a huge bonus. We will be back.
