About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I am a Michigan native and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. I have lived in Texas since 1984, and spent summers in Charlevoix with my family. Now my four children are grown and spread across the country from Virginia to Washington. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Northern Michigan

I have owned a home in Charlevoix for over twenty years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history & character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

Notes:
The house will accommodate six in beds, however I do not recommend more than four adults. The second bedroom located upstairs is petite with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional queen sofabed in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading, looking out the picture window at Lake Michigan, or gazing at a blazing fire.

Enchanting!

  • 5 of 5

Great stay at the Half house. Best for short and small people due to low ceilings, small doorways, steep stairs (to upstair bedroom with 2 twin beds.) Beautiful view of the lake and great location - perfect for walking everywhere. Equipped with everything a guest needs.

Absolutely charming! A dream come true!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed in many hotels, villas, bungalows, and even a castle but this is by far my favorite place I've stayed yet. It used to be West Baden was my number one now this little hobbit house is my number one. First of all I am short so for once in my life I felt like I fit literally inside of where I was staying even down to the shower being the correct height for me as well as the doorways and the roof itself being the appropriate height for me. Secondly from the beautiful fireplace to the gorgeous shabby chic decor, you just can't ask for a more charming home away from home. The house is also equipped with all the amenities you would expect to have it your own home including plush towels and a comfortable pull out couch to watch TV or just look across the street to beautiful Lake Michigan. I can't say enough about this little hobbit house what a fabulous experience it was to stay inside of it.

Cozy get-a-way

  • 5 of 5

My wife, baby son, and I tucked away for the weekend in this cozy architectural gem. Don't be fooled by the size! We made gourmet meals in the well-equipped kitchen and ate by the gorgeous fireplace each night. Beautiful view of frozen Lake Michigan and a short walk from downtown Charlevoix. We also got a kick out of people rubber-necking to catch a view of the house. We highly recommend a visit to this magical spot.

Very relaxing with all the right amenities

  • 5 of 5

Spent a long weekend in the house, and it was perfect weather for relaxing in front of a fire. It was also fun to read up on Earl Young and then go for walks looking for his (or his daughter's) designs around town. One warning though - be prepared for many people to stop on the street to photograph this house and the thatch-roofed house next door. I am hoping those people took some wonderful shots with me photobombing them through the picture window.

Bill has the house equipped with every amenity you can imagine, but we ended up just sitting and talking or reading and going for walks around town. We came in February - I can only imagine how nice it would be to stay here in the summer! :)
