About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I am a Michigan native and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. I have lived in Texas since 1984, and spent summers in Charlevoix with my family. Now my four children are grown and spread across the country from Virginia to Washington. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Northern Michigan

I have owned a home in Charlevoix for over twenty years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history & character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

Magical little cottage with a surprising use of space.

What a delight! Bill Thom has thought of everything! The kitchen was well stocked, as were the bathrooms, and even condiments in the refrigerator. Four of us stayed there very comfortably. We even made a fire in the beautiful fireplace. There are lots of closets with all sorts of helpful amenities in them. We used the outdoor furniture every day as they face a beautiful view of Lake Michigan through the trees! It was a quick walk to downtown, which is a wonderful place! There are washer/dryers, dish washer, iron/board, 2 TV's, free wifi, books to read, stationary with a picture of the house to send family, extra chairs for outside.....even horse shoes and kites to fly on the beach!! The neighboring home is incredible... A renovated version of the original Earl Young family home. I would highly recommend this property for anyone needing to get away to someplace beautiful! Thank you Bill

It was a unique house and a great location to spend a few days in northern Michigan.

  • 4 of 5

Both the mushroom house and the history of Earl Young were very interesting. The location was within walking distance of downtown Charlevoix and Michigan Beach. The sunsets from the beach were magnificent. The house itself was small but clean and comfortable. I would recommend the property for a short stay in Northern Michigan. The only disadvantage was that our friends, who stayed in an equally unique Mushroom House a few doors down from this one, paid only half the rent that we paid.

A home so charming that a Leprechaun naps on the roof

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in this home slightly before peak season, when the days are warm, but the Lake breezes are cool, and the nights are chilly. It's such an honor to stay in one of Earl Young's home (and I would say certainly one of the most representative of his style). I was concerned when I learned that the primary heat source was the fireplace, but quickly found that a fire warmed the entire home quickly. You can't beat a location with a public beach access across the street and all the downtown shops and restaurants within walking distance. I would (and already have) recommended it to friends.

An amazing weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Half House is a wonderful place to stay in Charlevoix! Not only is the house one of the most recognizable of the Earl Young homes, but it is as adorable inside as outside. The location is perfect, being one block from the city beach where Petoskey stones abound, and only 4 blocks from downtown and the incredible restaurants that Charlevoix offers. We will be back, next time for a whole week!!

Love this fairytale house!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this adorable fairytale home for a weekend getaway. This house is a fantastic getaway for a couple or small family. Everything you need is included in the house...bring your own food and enjoy a peaceful and magical weekend in this fairytale home. Downtown is charming and accessible via walking or short drive. And the Lake Michigan views are breathtaking. I'd highly recommend renting this fairytale piece of history. Cheers!

The house will accommodate six in beds, however I do not recommend more than four adults. The second bedroom located upstairs is petite with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional queen sofabed in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading, looking out the picture window at Lake Michigan, or gazing at a blazing fire.
