About the property

2 Br, 1 Bath Off Grid Log Home On 60 Acres, Surrounded By National Forest

This well constructed log home is off grid, but features a fully equipped kitchen with propane appliances, a full bath with a shower/tub combination, and propane lights throughout. Electricity is available if needed using solar energy and a propane generator. The living area features a wood stove, dining area for 6 and big cushioned benches with great views, along with a couple of recliners to relax in front of the fire. There is a big porch with endless views, equipped with an outdoor table, rocking chairs and Adirondack chairs for relaxing. A deck next to the porch has a bench and is a great place for outdoor grilling. The Master Bedroom has a King Bed; the second bedroom has two twins, and the living room area has cushioned long benches that can accommodate additional sleepers if needed. There is no TV or WiFi in the home, but the cell signal is very good, so portable hot spots are fine. (Hot spots are also readily available in town at various locations). The house sits on 60 acres, surrounded by National Forest, within a couple of miles of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Area. Four Mile Creek runs through the narrow valley just below the cabin. With no other homes anywhere in sight, you have wonderful views of the Collegiate Peaks to the west, Buffalo Peaks to the north, and the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the south. A few miles down the road towards town, the Four Mile area offers miles and miles of jeep roads and some singletrack. There are hiking and mountain biking opportunities right out the door of the cabin. Wildlife sightings are frequent. In spite of the wonderful feeling of isolation, the town of Buena Vista is only about 15 to 20 minutes away -- with restaurants, bars, and other services. Buena Vista is well know for its whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Arkansas river, as well as for endless hiking and mountain biking trails in the Collegiate Peaks area to the west of town.

About Debbie Farrell

I have lived in the Buena Vista area for about 14 years, having moved here from big cities on the East Coast to enjoy the wonderful mountains. I love to travel, but every time I come back to this valley, I am more convinced that there is no better place to live. It is absolutely beautiful here, with the '14ers' of the Collegiate Peaks towering over the 8,000 foot valley, snow-capped for a lot of the year. We enjoy tons of sunshine with Colorado blue skies. Since I love all the things you can do in mountains (trail running, hiking, skiing, showshoeing, biking), this area really has it all for me.

Debbie Farrell purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Debbie Farrell chose South Central Colorado

While I have a lovely home on the west side of the valley (with great mountain views), I fell in love with this property when I happened upon it on a trail run one day. The views are so expansive and the feeling of having it all to yourself so strong, that I still feel like I exhale the minute I step out onto the porch. One day I'd like to build on the property, but in the meantime, I thought I would offer others that special feeling that I get every time I spend time at the cabin.

What makes this cabin unique

I don't even know how to convey how special this property is. A couple of times, I've had barbecues during the day at the cabin for my friends from the area. I find that people stay until the sun goes down because they don't want to leave the porch. (The photo above was a recent birthday party up there.) It's also a great feeling to just stroll out of the cabin down to the creek or across the road up to the (local secret) mountain bike trail along the ridge line.

Secluded cabin with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

This cabin truly is unique and we were blessed Debbie opened her home to our family. We couldn't have been more pleased to get away for a week and used this secluded cabin as a landing spot for several day hikes in this beautiful area.

Beautiful location for a rustic, spacious, clean log cabin

  • 4 of 5

First, the property is great! We were looking for a cabin in Buena Vista away from it all and with a brilliant view. I don't think there are many that fit this criteria in the area. And to top it off it was a great, clean cabin.

Impressive view, log cabin, off grid but with all the amenities expected for a vacation rental! Hot water, solar power, battery backup with automatic generator, propane fridge, forced heat (not really needed, but convenient)

I have a 5yo and 2yo and they had a blast! We all enjoyed the view at breakfast and dinner. This cabin was great for us.

there are a few (but inconsequential) cons just to be complete w the review:

-tankless hot water heater made it difficult to keep consistent shower temperature for the kids, so we took a bath instead.

- just 6ish miles from downtown Buena Vista, but the dirt road made it take longer. But we'll worth the trade-off for exclusive property with brilliant views.

- You can get great AT&T signal if you turn your phone to prefer 3g. 4g worked inconsistently even with full bars. I was able to stream HBO on this.

Will go again. Did I mention the view is spectacular?

A magical mountain haven

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was the perfect, restful paradise for our recent Colorado visit. We were impressed with how private it truly is--the cabin is surrounded by wilderness and gorgeous views in every direction. You can't even see another structure except the barely-visible lights of Buena Vista proper far off at night. I've stayed at more expensive/exclusive properties in nearby areas before and don't think they hold a candle to this place. We hardly noticed the cabin being off the grid--outlets in every room made it easy to charge mobile devices and the propane lights were simple to use once we got the hang of them. The kitchen was well outfitted with everything we needed for fabulous meals enjoyed on the porch (including the easy-to-set-up grill for burgers one night). Debbie's instructions made everything simple to find and use. I was only able to get phone data from Sprint on one far corner of the porch, but my partner had no issues with his AT&T data. While the road to the cabin would be fine for a regular passenger car, we were glad to have a 4-wheel drive car so we could also enjoy some of the surrounding rougher roads in the Fourmile BLM/USFS land, including a drive to the nearby Davis Meadow hike, which provided spectacular views of the collegiate peaks (and an exciting run-in with a moose on the trail!). It was also easy to get into Buena Vista and Leadville to explore other local attractions. Between the location, building, amenities, and ease of use, this really is the best vacation rental property we've ever had the privilege of staying at. We already miss the stunning stillness, quiet, and beauty and can't wait to return one day soon!

Hiking, Mountain Biking, ATVing, Fly Fishing, and Hunting opportunities abound in this area. The Cabin is less than 2 miles from the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness area. On 60 acres, surrounded by National Forest, there are no other houses in sight of the cabin, but you are still only about 15 minutes to the town of Buena Vista, with restaurants, bars, a good grocery store, liquor stores and other services.
