Overview

South Central Colorado Cabin Rental Photos and Description

2 Br, 1 Bath Off Grid Log Home On 60 Acres, Surrounded By National Forest

This well constructed log home is off grid, but features a fully equipped kitchen with propane appliances, a full bath with a shower/tub combination, and propane lights throughout. Electricity is available if needed using solar energy and a propane generator. The living area features a wood stove, dining area for 6 and big cushioned benches with great views, along with a couple of recliners to relax in front of the fire. There is a big porch with endless views, equipped with an outdoor table, rocking chairs and Adirondack chairs for relaxing. A deck next to the porch has a bench and is a great place for outdoor grilling. The Master Bedroom has a King Bed; the second bedroom has two twins, and the living room area has cushioned long benches that can accommodate additional sleepers if needed. There is no TV or WiFi in the home, but the cell signal is very good, so portable hot spots are fine. (Hot spots are also readily available in town at various locations). The house sits on 60 acres, surrounded by National Forest, within a couple of miles of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Area. Four Mile Creek runs through the narrow valley just below the cabin. With no other homes anywhere in sight, you have wonderful views of the Collegiate Peaks to the west, Buffalo Peaks to the north, and the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the south. A few miles down the road towards town, the Four Mile area offers miles and miles of jeep roads and some singletrack. There are hiking and mountain biking opportunities right out the door of the cabin. Wildlife sightings are frequent. In spite of the wonderful feeling of isolation, the town of Buena Vista is only about 15 to 20 minutes away -- with restaurants, bars, and other services. Buena Vista is well know for its whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Arkansas river, as well as for endless hiking and mountain biking trails in the Collegiate Peaks area to the west of town.

About Debbie Farrell

I have lived in the Buena Vista area for about 14 years, having moved here from big cities on the East Coast to enjoy the wonderful mountains. I love to travel, but every time I come back to this valley, I am more convinced that there is no better place to live. It is absolutely beautiful here, with the '14ers' of the Collegiate Peaks towering over the 8,000 foot valley, snow-capped for a lot of the year. We enjoy tons of sunshine with Colorado blue skies. Since I love all the things you can do in mountains (trail running, hiking, skiing, showshoeing, biking), this area really has it all for me.

Debbie Farrell purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Debbie Farrell chose South Central Colorado

While I have a lovely home on the west side of the valley (with great mountain views), I fell in love with this property when I happened upon it on a trail run one day. The views are so expansive and the feeling of having it all to yourself so strong, that I still feel like I exhale the minute I step out onto the porch. One day I'd like to build on the property, but in the meantime, I thought I would offer others that special feeling that I get every time I spend time at the cabin.

What makes this cabin unique

I don't even know how to convey how special this property is. A couple of times, I've had barbecues during the day at the cabin for my friends from the area. I find that people stay until the sun goes down because they don't want to leave the porch. (The photo above was a recent birthday party up there.) It's also a great feeling to just stroll out of the cabin down to the creek or across the road up to the (local secret) mountain bike trail along the ridge line.

How do you write a good review for something you'd prefer to keep a secret! : ) If your looking for some quiet mountain time without roughing it, this is the place. Great views, great accommodations and arguably the best feature; no t.v. If getting away to unplug is your goal, this is the place.

Don't Stay Here

  • 1 of 5

Dirty place. We planned to spend our honeymoon here and what a disappointment it was to find the house completely covered in dust, dog hair and dander. The place smelt like a wet dog. The windows we covered in a dirty film, the master bedroom had dust and trash under it and my new husband and I were forced to sleep n separate beds on our honeymoon. We were booked for 9 days, however, we were left only four towels, wash clothes and hand towels. No extra sheets were left for us to change the sheets. The house was covered in cob webs and dead bugs. Under every table was dust and dog hair. The septic tank is leaking raw sewage on the back hillside. Each morning we were delighted to find rat droppings on the stove.

The housekeeper don't throw away left items left behind so you will find rotten food in the fridge.

When asked for our deposit back we were told that we broke a shelf in the fridge and we would have to replace it. She doesn't come up often so the property is only maintained by a hourly cleaning company, so it's easy for the maids to do a unacceptable and blame you the renter for any damages.

The front porch is a accident waiting to happen. The porch is falling and the house is losing its foundation. DANGEROUS

STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE...... I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE

Owner's Response: I will try to respond to most of what is included in this review. I use a cleaning service -- which I have used for two years with very few and only minor complaints. I check periodically on their work -- although I was out of the country for three weeks before this stay, so I had not been up there right before the stay. Tenants who were there before and after, however, wrote very good reviews and were satisfied with what they found. The cleaning staff leaves left over condiments (ketchup, mustard, pickles, margarine) in the refrigerator, none of which should have caused the refrigerator to smell- and which most tenants appreciate having. I gave this tenant the benefit of the doubt that the cleaning was not up to standard and made an appropriate adjustment. There are plenty of extra linens stored at the cabin -- all it would have taken is a phone call and I could have told her where they were. I provide contact information so people can easily reach me, so I'm not sure why she opted to not let me know of her issues on arrival or during her stay. The septic tank was inspected and emptied two months ago. The foundation and the deck are not collapsing. There are not now nor have there ever been rats in the cabin. We do occasionally get mice which is normal for log homes in the middle of the National Forest. We generally look carefully for where they may have gained entry and then seal it appropriately. We did not, however, find any evidence of mice in the cabin after this stay. In summary, I would suggest that potential tenants read all the reviews and then draw your own conclusions.

We loved this cabin the views were amazing!!! We enjoyed coffee in the rockers each morning watching the sun come over the mountains, and all you could hear were the birds. So peaceful and relaxing!! The cabin was the perfect place to relax and my girls loved the chipmunks and the hummingbirds. We would love to come back and are telling all our friends thank you!

Awesome

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was just as expected and the views were even better than expected. We spent time during the day climbing some of the 14ers and to come back to this rental was just what we needed after a long day hiking. We sat on the porch and relaxed and took it all in. Overall great experience.
