About Jerry Gundersen

We are a writer and an apparel designer, we are parents to kids and dogs, and we love to share our beautiful spot on the planet. We like hiking, biking, boating, picking mushrooms and blackberries, cooking, reading and good conversation.

Jerry Gundersen purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Jerry Gundersen chose Puget Sound

It's perfectly situated with a view of Puget Sound, Blake Island and the one and only Mount Rainier. It's a quiet place for reading, writing and dreaming, and a fun place for active sports, too.

What makes this cottage unique

Spectacular scenery, wonderful walks, nearby shopping, eating and entertainment, including a historic movie theater from 1936. Attending an event at The Manor House? Stay in the guest house, which is a short walk down the beach.

Awful

  • 1 of 5

Place had been won in an auction for out of town parents and brother of a groom. But no one had checked the place prior to our arrival although it is host family's duty to do so. It was inappropriate for three people to stay there. The beds were children sized. There was no privacy. The thin sliding doors provided no quiet. There were inhospitable weird signs all around saying Don't do this, don't do that which made one uncomfortable. We finally got another room at the best Western and want our money back. The walk down to the beach had dog poop all over it. The pool was off limits although it was right in front of the unit.

Owner's Response: The weekend in question was a charitable donation from us to support the local land trust, and the auction winner booked it for these guests, so it appears the complaint to the "host family" relates to that, not to the owners. Our detailed description and pictures clearly show the space. Bunk beds are standard twin size. The pool isn't in front of the cottage; it's at the main house and due to liability issues, we can't offer it to guests; this is spelled out in the rental agreement. If by "weird signs" you mean asking folks to recycle and conserve, and to use provided makeup wipes instead of towels, then welcome to Bainbridge. We regularly clean up after the dogs, but must have missed something. This guest inappropriately asked if one of their party could bunk in the main house, a huge imposition. We tried to work with them, suggesting they take the mattress out of the bunk and close the 4" thick pocket door for privacy. It was impossible to refund a donated weekend, so they'll have to let that go. They left a huge mess in the place--spilled food, filthy dishes, garbage on the floor, unsanitary rubbish next to the trash can in the bathroom. The personal nature of this "review" says more about the guest than the space. Our many 5-star reviews tell a much more accurate story.

Great space, gorgeous property, sweet people!

We wanted to see the sights in Seattle, but we didn't want to stay in the city. This was perfect! Seattle is a 30 minute ferry ride away. We left the car on the island and walked on the ferry. It was great not to have to worry about dealing with parking in Seattle. We could escape the hustle and bustle of the city at the end of the day and enjoy the relaxed pace of island living. We arrived at the guest house to find a gorgeous bouquet of flowers and cherry tomatoes from the garden. A welcome basket contained wine, chocolates and a novel written by the owner! The guest house is a find! It is extremely well appointed. Great furniture, appealing decor, comfortable beds, great towels and bedding, very warm and inviting! We felt at home right away! The space is very efficient and well planned out. Even with 5 of us staying there, we never felt that we lacked space. This place is private and secluded. A path to the beach meanders through the garden. On the beach, we saw whole shells, agates, jelly fish (that don't sting), ferries, and boats passing by. We enjoyed sitting on beach chairs and soaking in the sun while the boys used paddle boards that owners offered. We took a short walk on the beach to a quaint little community that had a working movie theater built in the 1936, a bakery, restaurants, and shops. The owners' home is nearby. They were such gracious and welcoming hosts. They introduced themselves, encouraged us to use the beach side fire pit and brought us the makings for s'mores! Pretty sweet! We would not have changed a thing! This is a gem and we can't wait to return!

Cool Property & Location

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed for 4 days and the location was great. The walk to the beach was literally 1 minute away from the front door... if that. Jerry, our host, offered the use of the paddle boards and also for the fire pit. We didn't take advantage of either but it was nice to have them available for our use. The place is just down the road from Lynnwood Center and there are some good restaurants there... Hammy's Burger and Treehouse Cafe that we both tried were good. So, the location is great and the place was great too.

Perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very clean, efficiently designed and well stocked. And, so peaceful in a beautiful private setting. We lacked for nothing. We enjoyed walking the beach to eat or get supplies---only about 1/2 mile. Would definitely return!

Came with high hopes, left with full hearts.

The photos and description of this place don't do it justice. Words and pictures simply can't capture its magic. Just getting there is an adventure. You leave bustling, construction-riddled Seattle behind the moment the ferryboat pulls away from the dock. Grab a coffee and look out the window at the mountains surrounding the Sound. A short time later, you drive off through a sweet little hometown street lined with shops and restaurants (a favorite--Restaurant Marche) and then down to Point White, which is the most scenic drive you can imagine. (Note: The owner's welcome packet has plenty of detail and explicit directions.)

The cottage is in a lovely private garden with a gravel path leading down to a beach with what is probably the best view in the world--beautiful Puget Sound and a dead-on view of Mount Rainier in all its snow-capped majesty. There is a fire pit with an umbrella and seating, perfect for an evening fire (there's a shop on the corner where you can grab what you need for Smores).

Inside, it's wonderfully equipped and spotless--one huge, airy, modern room with a queen bed that slides in and out to make a sofa, four built-in bunks with a wall to close them off for privacy, a dining/kitchen/prep area with a view of the garden. We loved the simplicity of it all and really appreciated the extra touches--beach towels, tons of books to read, games and toys, art supplies, and writing supplies.

There was a Welcome Basket waiting for us, filled with gourmet chocolates and a good bottle of wine, and a vase of fresh flowers on the table. What a great find. I hope we can come back soon!
