About Jerry Gundersen

We are a writer and an apparel designer, we are parents to kids and dogs, and we love to share our beautiful spot on the planet. We like hiking, biking, boating, picking mushrooms and blackberries, cooking, reading and good conversation.

Jerry Gundersen purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Jerry Gundersen chose Puget Sound

It's perfectly situated with a view of Puget Sound, Blake Island and the one and only Mount Rainier. It's a quiet place for reading, writing and dreaming, and a fun place for active sports, too.

What makes this cottage unique

Spectacular scenery, wonderful walks, nearby shopping, eating and entertainment, including a historic movie theater from 1936. Attending an event at The Manor House? Stay in the guest house, which is a short walk down the beach.

Came with high hopes, left with full hearts.

The photos and description of this place don't do it justice. Words and pictures simply can't capture its magic. Just getting there is an adventure. You leave bustling, construction-riddled Seattle behind the moment the ferryboat pulls away from the dock. Grab a coffee and look out the window at the mountains surrounding the Sound. A short time later, you drive off through a sweet little hometown street lined with shops and restaurants (a favorite--Restaurant Marche) and then down to Point White, which is the most scenic drive you can imagine. (Note: The owner's welcome packet has plenty of detail and explicit directions.)

The cottage is in a lovely private garden with a gravel path leading down to a beach with what is probably the best view in the world--beautiful Puget Sound and a dead-on view of Mount Rainier in all its snow-capped majesty. There is a fire pit with an umbrella and seating, perfect for an evening fire (there's a shop on the corner where you can grab what you need for Smores).

Inside, it's wonderfully equipped and spotless--one huge, airy, modern room with a queen bed that slides in and out to make a sofa, four built-in bunks with a wall to close them off for privacy, a dining/kitchen/prep area with a view of the garden. We loved the simplicity of it all and really appreciated the extra touches--beach towels, tons of books to read, games and toys, art supplies, and writing supplies.

There was a Welcome Basket waiting for us, filled with gourmet chocolates and a good bottle of wine, and a vase of fresh flowers on the table. What a great find. I hope we can come back soon!

We enjoying staying at the guest house very much! The house is very comfortable and clean. We spent time relaxing on the beach, enjoying the spectacular view of Mt. Rainer and watching the ferry boats go by. Very relaxing!!

Lovely guest house by the beach!

  • 4 of 5

This is a cozy little place for a weekend getaway (or longer); a stone's throw from the beach, hiking trails, and local eateries & shops. The cottage has everything you need for a short stay, very clean, and great customer service from the owners. They even provide a little welcome basket w/ goodies-my son loved the chocolate and I loved the wine....plus the delicious owner-roasted coffee! The Marketplace in the Lynnwood shopping center is really great for a breakfast stop.

beach + forest + mountains

  • 5 of 5

We experienced the ultimate in comfort and hospitality.

Where do I start with the raves? With the digital "welcome packet" sent by the host, filled with clear directions, tips and witticisms? Or with the beautifully carved rustic sand dollar sign showing where to turn in to the property? Maybe it's the fairy lights glowing around the doorway, or the clean, modern design of this unusual cottage. It has heated floors and unique angles, a work of art in itself. The decor is simple and chic, a combination of antique and new.

There was a welcome basket with books, wine and chocolate (what else does one need?), and all the essentials--more books, local area guides, maps and suggestions for local hiking from beach to forest and back again, writing materials, toys and drawing materials, board games, beach towels, a Bose speaker for your device, Netflix and Amazon Prime on the big screen, and many other thoughtful touches.

The amenities are abundant and luxurious--efficient kitchen/prep area with all the basics (no oven), fluffy towels and robes, a plug-in spot for charging, magnifying mirror, luxury soap, shampoo and conditioner, plenty of closet space, high-end bathroom fixtures, washer and dryer, iron and ironing board... And that's just the interior. Borrow the owners' double bike or stand-up paddleboards and get on out there!

The real charm of this place is that when you step outside, you're in a lovely garden with a gravel path leading to a magnificent beach--a long, low bank with a dead-on view of Mount Rainier. You can walk along the beach and view blue heron, scoters, sea lions, otters, eagles, kingfishers, leaping salmon...and then you come to a fun new playground for the kids and Pleasant Beach Village, the playground for adults, with its movie theatre, bars, restaurants and shopping.

clean, modern, comfortable, scenic

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place with great amenities and many extras--wine, books and snacks, cut flowers, popcorn maker, fluffy towels and robes. Best of all is the neighborhood--a garden walk down to the beach, and a beach walk to a really fun area called Pleasant Beach Village. Incredible hike and bike trails just steps away. Glorious dead on view of Rainier.
