About Jessica Whittington

I am a commercial lawyer from Northern Ireland. My partner is Zacharias Petrakis, a specialist stone mason/builder from Pano Elounda. For the past 7 years I have split my time between Crete and the UK. Zach and I restore and build properties in the area, mainly for non Greeks. We now live in Pano Elounda in another restored village house. I have four children all presently working or studying in Ireland, London and Scotland who love coming out to stay in the Kato House in the summer, as do many other members of my large family who come from all parts of the world here to meet up.

Jessica Whittington purchased this house in 2001

Why Jessica Whittington chose Lassithi

My entire family fell in love with this house when I saw it. For us it was a rare chance to buy a traditional house with modern comforts, close to the village centre but still with a quiet village feel and wonderful view. We had loved Elounda for years but didn't want a standard new build. We lived in the house for a few years before we finished the one we currently have and have loved it winter and summer. Zacharias was initially against buying the house, He didn't like the lack of on street parking, Greeks don't walk! But even he has come to love it and he has added some wonderful features, including the elliptical stone fireplace, which in winter can be enjoyed from both the living room and the kitchen. The latticed wooden ceilings inspired him to do the same in other restorations.

What makes this house unique

I love this house and I have lived in it.When I decided to rent it in 2010, I wanted all my guests to enjoy it too. This is a much loved original family home and I hope that shows. Having been a tourist myself for many years for me the priorities are cleanliness, comfortable beds, a well stocked kitchen ( with large fridge and washing machine) and lots of hot water and towels! Because we are on hand, our guests know that any problems will be sorted very quickly. I don't think there is a comparable traditional house for rent in the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

In spite of the photos you can see what a lovely, restored little house awaits. No matter where you sit you can have a gorgeous view and there is lots of seating so everyone can have their dose of sun, shade and, when necessary, protection from the wind. We, out of sheer enjoyment of the views, forgot to go on any big trips! We also couldn't manage all the trips Jessica recommended but two important ones we didn't miss: visiting the fish taverna Kanali, where one sits in a gorgeous place and eats delicious plates, and going to the Hope which was in the neighbourhood, 10 minutes away, where we passed an evening here or there with fresh Meze. In the surrounding area there is everything you need with enough Kafenions here and there to get a little coffee. We parked our car in the nearby olive grove, Jessica looked after us very well when we arrived and with basic food stuff in the fridge for us. That's never happened to us before- super! The kitchen is fully equipped, the beds are tip quality and the outdoor furniture complete and clean, what more would you want? More holidays, our week was much too short and we will come again! Because of that we almost don't want to give this recommendation in case it will be all booked up next time!

Wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with a group of friends for a week. We are in our early 30s and were looking for somewhere to stay that was quiet but within easy access of restaurants and bars - the house was perfect for this! The house has several different outside areas, allowing you to make the most of the amazing view. It was very clean, with all essentials available and very nicely maintained. Elounda is also lovely, relaxed but plenty of things to do and great food! Would absolutely recommend others to stay here, and I will definitely plan to come back!

We were here for a week and it was excellent. It has idyllic views of the bay and of distant pink mountains, the cottage is rustic, comfortable and charming. And the town itself is great fun. Brilliant holiday.

Our honeymoon in this romantic house was amazing!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I arrived in the sunny Elounda church car park at 6pm to be greeted by Deborah. We were shown to the stunning romantic house at the top of the village, overlooking the beautiful bay. I couldn't wait to get inside the little gate as I knew there was a breath-taking view just waiting to be admired. I wasn't disappointed. We just stood there in silence for a few moments and let it all in. There was a lovely welcome pack with wonderful local delights & the essentials (wine!!). We sat out watching the lights twinkle loving the whole feel of the house and the place. The next morning the sun rose over the hill across the bay and woke us up with a glorious bright shining light. The master bedroom is upa tiny spiral stairs with it's own en-suite and ample cupboard space. We went out to the balcony to the stunning morning sunshine and again beautiful views and spectacular colours and shades of blue everywhere.

We spent 10 days in this gorgeous romantic hosue, loving every minute of it. We fell in love with Crete, with Elounda, with the people, the local historical sites (Lato is so close), the mountains, the quiet beaches (we had them to ourselves a few times). We will definitely be back and we strongly recommend it. We had a car and the road up to the house is a little small, but we live in rural Ireland so we are used to this! Thank you for a wonderful honeymoon with amazing memories. Orla ....Mrs Ward!

Idyllic!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to stay in a typical Greek house with the pace of life to suit and Kato House ticked all the boxes. The facilities are excellent and we loved the quirkiness. The views of Elounda and the Spinalonga peninsula are spectacular! An idyllic Greek Island holiday.

Great house for a girlie week away!

  • 5 of 5

This is a delightful property with stunning views over the sea and mountains. The house itself was fabulous. Lots of quaint nooks and crannies and lovely balconies on each level. The bedrooms were spacious with very comfortable beds and the house in general was extremely well equipped. My friends and I enjoyed some wonderful walks through the mountains and the views were breathtaking. We were a group mature women who wanted a holiday that offered more than beaches and bars and we certainly found it in Elounda.

Wonderful holiday in a charming home.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week in this unique property where you're not far from the wonderful hustle and bustle of Elounda but far enough away to enjoy some peace and tranquility. I know we were there out of season (just) but very few people seemed to venture into the labyrinth of tiny streets that comprises Kato Elounda and those that did, did so with respect and wonder. No boxy apartments or villas up here. Now we're home we long for the view from the main bedroom window, sunrises were beautiful....every day! Ok, so the house is a climb up uneven ground but even the unfit can do it gently. We loved it and would recommend it highly. The house itself has everything you could wish for and I'm sure if it's not there, Jessica will put it there for you. Nothing is too much trouble and we really appreciated the introduction to the house, from the initial pick up and drive up to the house to get the lay of the land, to the really useful information sheet provided, telling you everything you need to know and more besides. We had hired a car although you don't need to do this and we were shown where to park this and walk up to the house. If you hire a very small car and you are feeling brave, it's possible to get closer. Elounda is very self contained with a huge choice of cafes, bars and restaurants. Jessica's recommendation of Kanali Restaurant should be followed up, we had a lovely meal there. Also The Carob Tree in Plaka is well worth a visit, we went twice. If you are going to Spinalonga, go early and go from Plaka, which is about 4km along the coast. The crossing is quieter from there and doesn't seem so commercialised.Plaka has some charming shops, 'The Green Shop' is just lovely. Elounda gets very swollen with visitors bussed in to visit Spinalonga, no doubt thanks to Victoria Hislop. The Eden Bar in Elounda has great service, a brother and sister set up, both really friendly and super efficient.

We also visited Agios Nikolaos and whilst great for shopping, it wasn't as intimate as Elounda. Another day we took a drive all the way around the bay to Muchos. We had sat and looked at the view for nearly a week and it kept inviting us to go and take a closer look.... we're glad we did, some of the views are spectacular.

We'd highly recommend this property to you, it has charm and character that you rarely see in rented holiday accommodation.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Moira for that really all encompassing review, it is great when guests who are new to the area like it so much. It was lovely to meet you both- the outside light on the terrace has now been installed! I do hope you come back sometime.

Notes:
Air-conditioning in the second floor bedrooms only. Downstairs has floor fans. The property is not suitable for young children or older people due to the nature of the inside stairs and low balcony walls. Parking is on street and is limited in high season, the street itself is very narrow and driving up it is not for the faint hearted! Easy parking is always available below the church, approx 200 metres away. Kato Elounda is on a hill, so the downhill walk to the village is an easy 7 minutes, the uphill walk home is a lot more taxing! Car rental is not essential, but you have to be fit enough for the hill. No taxi access. We are local owners and are more than happy to provide lots of information about almost anything. This house is very suitable for those wanting to experience both Greek village life and the good tourist facilities of Elounda,Previous guests have been families with teenage children, couples and girls only activity holidays.
