Most famous surfing beach in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
In front of the Villa is located the most famous surfing beach in Nicaragua. The beach has several views, each of unparalleled beauty. You can enjoy from the Villa the magnificent view known as the Majahual's Rock. To the south in the infinite you can see the mountains located in Costa Rican territory. Many people enjoy swimming in these crystalline waters.
Each evening you can enjoy a beautiful sunset
The highlight of Villa Tortuga is definitely the sunset view. The house is great and the beds very comfortable. The taco shacks and casual restaurant at Playa Maderas are an easy walk and very convenient to have so close by. The house has all basic supplies like sheets, towels, soap, etc. but is lacking a bit in the kitchen. It could really use some staples like oil, salt/pepper, coffee, etc. The pots, pans and knives can use updating as well. Drinking water is supplied. Ricardo and his staff were very attentive and helpful in arranging specifics. This house is more remote than we originally thought and we opted out of renting a car. The most affordable way into town (SJDS) was to take the shuttle truck leaving from Playa Maderas about 3 times a day. Times are posted at the beach. Cost was only $3 each way or $5 roundtrip. The only drawback was the last trip back from town left before 5pm. For private transport it was $30 one way. The trip into town takes almost 30 minutes on a bumpy road. We were a group of women and never felt at risk. 24 hour security on site at the house ensured privacy as well. The pool was kept clean and the daily maid service was definitely adequate. Wifi was hit or miss. This may be because of the high winds, but we were constantly kicked off Wifi. The water in the shower never got hot, but due to the warm weather we didn't mind taking cool showers. Having a phone that works in Nicaragua is recommended. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience and would highly recommend this house for anyone looking for an adventurous place to relax and enjoy the surrounding area.
This place is awesome! The location could not be any better, it's a 1 minute walk to the beach (which you get to yourself most of the time), the views and sunsets are to die for, and it's only a 10 to 15 minutes drive to San Juan del Sur and the drive is really not that bad. It's pure heaven for children (and adults too!) as they go from the beach which has awesome rock pools (saw angel fishes, tons of star fishes to name a few) to the jacuzzi (which is more a small pool than a jacuzzi, it's actually quite big). The house itself is really nice and has everything you need: we cooked everyday and the kitchen has all necessary items, bedrooms are spacious and A/C works really well, great water pressure in the bathrooms. The staff is very helpful with a guard 24/7, pool is kept really clean, any issue is fixed right away and Ricardo was perfect at answering emails very promptly and even greeted us when we got there.
We got lucky to have monkeys visiting us one evening, this was awesome. You will see a lot of different creatures from praying mantis to skunks! Welcome to paradise.
Yes, there is no WiFi but why would you need it in a place like this? My son, who is always attached to his iPad and his online games didn't ask for it once, way too busy with the beach, the Jacuzzi, the animals. Book without hesitation. Highly recommended!!!
Villa Tortuga is a safe, relaxing, well-equipped, conveniently located, and gorgeous spot perched just above the beach, where the relaxing sound of breaking surf is never far away. But what truly makes this rental special is the personal attention every step of the way from the property manager Ricardo and from the security and housekeeping staff. Ricardo promptly responded to initial inquiry and any and all questions thereafter. He made transportation from Managua airport simple/comfortable and went out of his way to show us the town, beaches, restaurants, nearby properties, and monkey trail and to help us grocery shop. The staff was uniformly courteous/friendly and promptly attended to anything that needed doing (e.g., cleaning the pool, replacing the bottled water) and kept the grounds/house clean. They were attentive without being the least intrusive. I am a "hard grader" (hence only four stars) and I would recommend the rental to anyone.
The villa itself is decent-sized, easily sleeping 7 in three bedrooms, with a fourth room with a TV and sofa on the top floor. Bottom floor is open concept with a sitting area, dining area, bar area, and reasonably well-equipped kitchen. As the pictures show, there are multiple decks and places to sit; a VERY clean pool attended to daily; a two-minute walk to Playa Madera and five separate beach restaurants (one with free wifi); and a shuttle bus to take you to/from San Juan del Sur (it's NOT walkable). Other beaches are also walkable. Surfing is the big activity (lessons available), but there are also kayaks for rent on nearby Playa Marsella. Also expect mesmerizing sunsets nightly and a steady breeze that made A/C unnecessary. The other villas are close enough for big groups to rent multiple villas and interact, and yet offer complete privacy from one another if you are renting only one.
A couple of drawbacks: there's no internet on the property and cellular service is not particularly strong. The kitchen knives need sharpening. The road in/out requires a 4WD vehicle (but you can take the shuttle bus, too). Needless to say, you need to keep an eye on your belongings, but no more so than in any American city.
But each of these is a VERY minor point in the big scheme. We will definitely return and bring others with us, and you can't go wrong with Ricardo -- he's a dream host. Lastly, for those to whom it matters, this is a "gay-friendly" place, who welcome all with the same care/courtesy.
My family and I just got home after spending a week at Villa Tortuga (and then 4 days in Granada). Our time at Villas Playa Madera was absolutely unforgettable. Just about every day we walked to the beach for breakfast, played with the kids on the beach all morning, then headed back to spend the afternoon in the pool and the hammocks. Follow that up with some grilling while watching the sunset, and you have a perfect day. All that's left is to jump in the comfy beds and turn on the ice cold AC for a great night's rest.
The staff were incredibly helpful and professional. We felt completely safe and secure even with the remote location.
We will never forget the views of the Pacific (even all the way to Costa Rica), the time spent dancing in the living room, listening to the birds and monkeys in the jungle, our walks to the beach, and relaxing in the pool which was perfect for our 1.5 yr old and 3.5 yr old.
I cannot wait to return to Villa Tortuga. I'm already planning to return next year.
Book this home with absolute confidence. You will not be disappointed.
We spent the second week of November 2013 at this lovely place. The location is outstandingly beautiful and the beaches were clean and deserted. Every evening there was a wonderful sunset. In the villa all of the equipment (refrig, AC, etc.) was in good condition and worked well. The daily cleaning and jacuzzi service was fine. The majordomo who checked on us daily was excellent! He managed everything perfectly, in spite of the language barrier (we are from Germany and US/Texas) and was one of the big reasons why we enjoyed a relaxing stay. We recommend this location to all of our friends.
Playa Maderas is a social beach still with an original nicaraguan vibe. You can go to rustic restaurants on both sides - swim - surf - ride a horse - or just lay back and enjoy the sun. Neighbors work all together and you will get different experiences and special feeling of a cooperating community. Our villa is beachfront with the best location, in the edge of a forest with trails and howler monkeys.
