About John Reardon

I grew up in Northampton Massachusetts, a town with countless beautiful old homes and lots of woods. I spent countless days in my youth building tree forts never knowing that those 2 dynamics would intersect at this point. Upon arriving in San Diego with an interest in building and purchasing real estate, I became immediately interested in the largely neglected Victorian buildings in this area of town. This property became a labor of love for me many years ago and I hope that legacy will be carried forward by my 3 sons. My wife if Japanese, so our family often divides our time between 2 very different worlds, both with much to offer.

John Reardon purchased this condo in 1991

Why John Reardon chose San Diego

It is our hope that our guests will appreciate the attention to detail and uniqueness of design that has been incorporated into every aspect of this property.

What makes this condo unique

This property is strategically located close to most of San Diego's most popular destinations. It's central location and proximity to a newly revitalized downtown, airport, beaches and parks affords our guests the best possible experience while visiting San Diego.

Convenient location, clean property, and great city.

Enjoyed the fire pit, BBQ, and the orange tree in the back yard. 1.3 ish mile walk to Gas Light District or a cheap Uber ride away.

Clean, convenient and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable queen bed (sofa bed needs an upgrade), clean room with thoughtful details. BeShock Ramen on Market Street is excellent (walk down Broadway instead of Market as there is a lot of transient issues south on Market). There was a strong perfume smell in the room when we arrived but it lessened after a few days. Would be nice to have Kleenex provided and a book in the room with the house rules and restaurant recommendations :)

Owner was a accommodating in letting us leave our luggage for a few hours before our plane and checking in with us during our stay. We'd stay again!

Owner's Response: Downtown San Diego is experiencing another major building renaissance with as many as 20 cranes dominating the city landscape. These projects have displaced a portion of the homeless population which is typical in almost every American City these days. News reports over the past few months have highlighted this recent phenomenon which is impacting many areas of San Diego including the Beach Communities. The City Council recently addressed this issue by allocating millions of dollars towards a fund intended to provide viable solutions. We are located well above downtown on the slope, but at least for the time being, the homeless population is more noticeable than usual when walking through downtown. Thankfully, San Diego has a very low crime rate when compared to almost any other major metropolitan area and it is believed that this issue will begin to subside over the summer.

Absolutely Recommend

  • 5 of 5

I think I'll be repeating much of what has already been written about this property. The description and pictures as noted on VRBO are representative of the property so there won't be any surprises.

Owner/Staff: The owner, John, was terrific before and during our stay. Very helpful and responsive. His staff always friendly.

The Unit -- on the ground floor with its own little sitting area outside, quiet, bedroom a good size with lots of closet space, high ceilings. TV and Netflix. The internet was very good the entire 13 nights we stayed. Kitchen has all you would need to cook.

Location -- we loved that we could walk to many attractions; or driving to major attractions was easy and quick. For example - 15 minute walk to Gaslamp District; 25 to 30 minutes to the waterfront. From this you can walk to Seaport Village, USS Midway, Maritime Museum, Waterfront, etc. It took us less than 10 minutes to drive to Balboa Park and the Zoo. We went to a football game and that was also a10 minute drive. Petco is also do-able as a walk. You can walk to restaurants/bars as well. I'd recommend Hodad's on Broadway for a burger - about a 20 minute walk.

John provided 2 summaries of excursions -- the one to Torrey Pines / Mount Soledad was great as it provided a local's helpful hint about parking at the Gilderport versus the Park -- we avoided tons of parking issues at the Park.

Parking at the house: we never had an issue with parking. If not directly in front of the house, always closeby. Didn't have any security concerns.

General - yes, you will see a few homeless individuals if you walk but we never had any problems. Only 1 or 2 approached for money, and they were polite and did not give us any reason for concern.

Overall - We really enjoyed our stay at this property and in this unit. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it; and no doubt will recommend it to our friends who are thinking of visiting San Diego.

Cute and clean

  • 5 of 5

The location is great and the apartment was very cute and clean. The apartment isn't large, but it's very comfortable. Including the extras, there were 6 pillows for the beds and an extra blanket and comforter for the pull-out (sheets already on it). The apartment had everything we needed, felt safe (we were 3 young women), and parking was very easy. Regarding what some reviews said about the homeless population - we never saw any homeless people near the property. 5-6 blocks away there are some areas where numerous homeless people have tents set up, but it's not right by the property and was never a problem at all.

It was easy to get to different areas - Gaslamp, Balboa Park, and Coronado were all short trips. Even La Jolla didn't take long to get to - but it did take about 45 min coming back at rush hour. For exploring different parts of San Diego, it felt like the perfect home base. The property was great, and I'd definitely go back again. The outdoor space was really cute, we just didn't use it because it got too chilly at night in December.

Impressed!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time to stay at a VRBO and we were a bit skeptical especially not knowing the San Diego area, but much to our surprise we were impressed by the process and how easy it was to book our stay. Once we arrived to our location, again, we were afraid that we had made the wrong selection simply because it was downtown, but again, we were impressed on how clean our unit was and the proximity to downtown was awesome! Our unit was so cute, comfortable, well maintained, extremely clean and it was stocked perfectly with the necessities for our stay. It was so nice to have a coffee pot, coffee, and creamer available for morning coffee which we enjoyed every morning. The owner, John, checked on us, to make sure everything was going well. We were relaxed and felt right at home. The Victorian home has separate private units and it was SO safe and enjoyable. I highly recommend staying here; I know we will stay here again on our next trip to San Diego. The owner is not a person that is lurking around to make sure all is going well, he just emails you to check on you for anything that you might need. Thank you John for allowing us to stay there and enjoy our stay in the great city of San Diego with it's friendly and accommodating people. And, our Uber service was phenomenal! Again, thanks from Tom & Sylvia in Texas!
