Private Mid Century Resort
Mid century modern masterpiece by Kazumi Adachi built in 1958. Over 200 editorial and celebrity photo shoots for Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Clare, GQ, etc. and dozens of commercial shoots have taken place at this house over the past 15 years. Most recently: Cindy Crawford, Adelle, Zooey Deschanel, and fashion house Celine. Many of the worlds top photographers and art directors have lavished this home with praise referring to it's 'timeless soul', 'zen like quality', and one in particular said it was like 'your own private island in the city!' This home epitomizes indoor/outdoor living.
Located in famous Beachwood Canyon (where stars such as Bogart, Gable and Chaplin had their 'secret' homes), this very private property abuts over 600 acres of the largest urban park in America, Griffith Park . Horseback riding at the famous Sunset Ranch is only a ten minute walk down the trail. The other trail leads directly to Lake Hollywood or you can hike to the Hollywood sign and Griffith Park Observatory.
At nearly 1/2 an acre, It is a much larger property than one normally finds in the hills. The 3400 sq. ft. house is sited on its own flat pad on a ridge directly under the Hollywood Sign with views in all directions. Walls of glass surround the free form pool, which looks and feels nearly identical to Sinatra's Palm Springs home. Furnished with original and important pieces, this home is for the very sophisticated art and nature lover who values privacy and architectural integrity in both materials and design. The public places are suitably grand for entertaining while large suites provide sanctuary. The en suite bathrooms are phenomenal. Stellar views of downtown Los Angeles all the way to Long Beach from the pool area.
Wonderful central location: just a few minutes to Hollywood nightclubs and restaurants, theaters and major venues like the Hollywood Bowl or Greek theater; 15 min. to downtown; and 10 min to all the major studios in either Hollywood or Burbank. If you want to step back in time for an authentic Californian sophisticated modern experience, look no further...
Hi, I am an Architect, restauranteur and surfer, I grew up in Los Angeles at the Beach yet was always drawn to the hope and history of old Hollywood. After studying architecture at UC Berkeley, I moved back to Los Angeles and found myself a career in Film production and development. Never content with one career, I restore architecturally significant homes, have owned for 16 years one of the oldest bars in Hollywood and try to make sure to surf everyday!
Ian purchased this house in 2002
As significant as a Lautner or Neutra, I purchased this Kazumi Adachi designed house because it was like an architectural oasis in the middle of the wilderness and yet 5 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. I didn't think a property like this existed in the hills as it is a 'Palm Springs' style home on a large flat pad -- in fact it is almost a copy of Sinatra's Twin Palms estate in Palm Springs. This was also where Hollywood stars like Bogart and Gable had their 'secret' homes and the ghosts are still here! But it isn't all glamour and parties; to the Chumash Indians, this area was sacred and I could feel the land and mountains calling to me.
This home was designed for a wealthy couple who had fallen in love with Japanese architecture so they hired a Japanese American modernist architect. This is his largest home and quite certainly the best. It is a design with very few walls and an indoor/outdoor quality that fully exploits the climate in Southern California. Another benefit is that the air is good up here! And you can actually see stars at night! As an architect, I felt the house needed me to undo some wrong-headed remodels over the years and return the house to it's original integrity. This has been a painstakingly slow (and expensive!) but joyous journey. Maintaining the integrity of its 1958 vintage design and making the proper material choices has been a passionate endeavor since the day I bought this property. The siting of the house is magnificent -- private and flat (no stairs in the hills is a rarity). There are two master suites with only the best king size beds and en suite bathrooms that will take your breath away. All the rooms are large and flow into one another and the three large patios/lanais. The concrete floors and veneered walls and large glass sliding doors convey a sense of strength, authenticity, and minimalist beauty that does not feel brutal or industrial in any way. It is truly like living in an art piece. John Lautner once told me (personally) that 'great architecture will change your life' and this house is proof of that wonderful statement.
The house was amazing, and the owner and his concierge were so accommodating, and helpful. It was a perfect family vacation.
The house is very nice, with a lot of character. It was very clean on arrival. It also has beautiful views and the Hollywood sign is just above.
The owner handled the rental in an extremely professional and friendly manner, and I couldn't be more pleased.
I recommend this property and give it two enthusiastic thumbs up!
the house was exactly as it looked in the pictures--maybe even better! the fact that you could see the Hollywood sign from multiple points in the house was beyond amazing. not pictured are the insanely awesome lemon trees in the backyard and the unbelievable sunset views you'll get standing there while breathing in the citrus. try it with the window in the master bath open and the egg-shaped pristine white tub filling up from a waterfall-like faucet in the ceiling as the skylight floods the bath with rosy glow. heaven.
ian and crystal were so responsive and so flexible and nice. every person who stayed in the house with me now wants to rent it for their next getaway! hiking, pool, BBQ, relaxing, and that sunset....you will get it all.
We stayed for a week after our daughter's wedding. The house was perfect for us, our friends and family to lounge around, cook, swim.....relax.
Great bathrooms, linens, kitchen. Ian and Crystal were always quick to respond and easy to work with. Thank you!!
This is a fantastic home in the Hollywood Hills. Outside it features great views of Los Angeles, a heated pool, and walking trails that weave through the canyon. Inside was furnished with mid-century modern furniture and very cool art. The bathrooms were updated nicely and the bedrooms had very comfortable beds. The owner was very responsive to all our requests and we really enjoyed our stay. Thanks for everything Ian and Crystal!
We had an amazing time! Ian was very helpful and quick to respond to emails and calls. It was an unforgettable experience, the linens were lovely, and the water was warm. Light gently streamed thru the windows, and the view of the sunset was epic.
Lake Hollywood and the Mulholland Dam are just a 5 minute walk away. Both the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory can be hiked to. Griffith Park is the largest urban park in America and this property sits within it. The area is filled with interesting and significant architecture as well as 'secret' winding roads and staircases -- Beachwood Canyon was designed in the 1920's as a European style hillside village. Wildlife such a coyotes, hawks, deer, bobcats are present and inhabit the canyons that were used for decades by the Hollywood studios for their wilderness locations. Yet, drive 5 minutes and you are in the bustling new urban center of Hollywood or Universal City. Downtown Los Angeles is as close as 15 minutes away. Beverly Hills is 20 minutes away.
