|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Nestled at the foot of Mount Galiano with one of the most spectacular views of the Southern Gulf Islands, Orca Bay Retreat is located on Active Pass - the wondrous, often turbulent waters and marine passage separating Galiano and Mayne Islands.
This particular area is known for its resplendent array of wildlife - looking out from the deck you'll see seals sunning themselves on Collinson Reef, eagles soaring overhead or plucking fish from the ocean below, and otters frolicking in the swirling Pacific currents. Breathe the ocean air and feel connected to mother nature.
Active Pass is notably a frequently travelled waterway for resident and transient orca whales and humpbacks. Seeing these magnificent mammals in their natural element is truly breathtaking.
A wonderful, completely private escape, Orca Bay Retreat has all the modern amenities one could desire, including wireless connection to highspeed internet. Two bedrooms, each with queen size beds, offer luxurious comfort and nature views. Enjoy French Door walk-outs from the bedrooms, living room and kitchen. The house is extremely comfortable, accommodating up to four (4-pc bathroom in the main house), or six should the separate garden studio (with its own 3-pc bathroom) be opted for. The contemporary kitchen is loaded, including a stainless steel convection oven, microwave and dishwasher. An outdoor barbeque is available as well.
Orca Bay Retreat is actually located on Georgeson Bay, and is perfectly situated for guests to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities: hiking some of the best trails the Gulf Islands have to offer; kayaking, fishing and boating from nearby Montague Harbour Marina; golfing at The Galiano Golf & Country Club; swimming and beachcombing at the numerous nearby beaches, including our own Georgeson Bay beach below (here you can even hunt for arrowheads left behind by First Nations Peoples hundreds of years ago); exploring the island by bike; and strolling through The Bluffs park amidst indigenous arbutus and Garry Oak trees to incredible cliffside viewpoints of the Southern Gulf Islands.
When you've had enough of the outdoors, sit back, decompress, cuddle by the wood-burning fireplace and take in the stunning view. Enjoy island tranquility at its best at any time of the year. And because you're staying at 'Orca' Bay Retreat, always keep an eye on the water.
While we are a private escape nestled in nature, we are less than ten minutes from the Sturdies Bay Ferry terminal and within minutes of Galiano's shops, restaurants, groceries and galleries.
Due to our proximity to sheer unfenced cliffs and fast moving currents, we are not suitable for small children.
Gary and I (Lisa) have had a love affair with Galiano Island since my parents bought a cottage across the street over 20 years ago. Our two children have spent their summers exploring the natural wonders and beauty of the island, and more recently working at the marina and golf course. While we currently reside in Toronto, our hearts are on the island. We look forward to visiting Orca Bay Retreat throughout the year, especially in the winter months which have their own special cozy, seductive and stormy appeal.
Lisa MacKinnon purchased this house in 2013
This property is a gem. Formerly called InTheBluff and owned by our good friends, we consider ourselves grateful and fortunate to have been able to purchase it, and now to share its unique beauty and that of Galiano Island with others. We also love the island because of its close proximity to the mainland and Vancouver Island. There's nowhere else we'd want to be.
Fresh ocean air, incredible ocean views and unbelievable wildlife - whales, eagles, deer, seals and otters.
Looking out over Active Pass from the deck or living room is a transformative experience. The house, itself, is wonderfully comfortable and homey.
Orca Bay Retreat is a fabulous place to relax and be surrounded by spectacular nature. The lovely home has absolutely everything you would want to meet every one of your needs. The views from every window are amazing. The french doors from the kitchen, living room and master lets the outside in. The viewing deck makes you feel like you are sitting on a luxury yacht, while you watch eagles, seals, orca and ferries go by. This is truly a magnificent place AND the owners Lisa and Gary are an incredible couple. Thank you for sharing your beautiful place on Galiano with us.
We had a wonderful stay at Orca Bay retreat. It was wonderful waking up to the sight of the ocean. Every window we looked out had a view of either the water or the garden. It was a very good location, convenient to everything. All the little touches were so special. Thanks for a wonderful vacation.
We spent 10 days at Orca Bay Retreat and it was not enough! Such a beautiful property with spectacular views. The cottage has everything you could ever need; Lisa has thought of it all! From books to binoculars, comfy beds, a fully equipped kitchen, and a beautiful garden. The cottage is in the best location with Mount Galiano down the road to hike, yet close to town. We loved the island -it is magical. Lisa is a great host with lots of ideas of places to see, eat, visit and especially where to watch whales. We loved it!

We had a great long weekend away at Orca Bay Retreat. A very comfortable home, lovely garden and a wonderful setting right on Active Pass. We look forward to returning and highly recommend this home for a relaxing getaway and/or exploring the trails nearby and the island. Lisa it was perfect, you thought of everything, thank you!
How do you describe a whole month at Orca Bay Retreat and on Galiano? Think of every superlative in the book and you might come close. Lisa is the warmest, most organized and gracious rental host we have ever dealt with in 30 years of booking vacation properties.
Her cottage is spectacularly situated on the island - a retreat of amazing quiet, wonderful views, great opportunities for walking and taking pictures. The beds were comfy, the kitchen made cooking a dream, the bookshelves rife with great things to read. I was looking for just the right place to relax, read, write and renew as part of an academic sabbatical and found all that I'd hoped for at Orca Bay. The island was so quiet in Feb that we could walk trails without meeting a soul. Enjoyed fabulous food at Pilgrimme, took in programs at the library, attended the Literary Festival and met many interesting islanders. Spring came early, the daffodils bloomed and we hated to leave.
