Our Classic New England Gambrel roofed house perches on its landscaped lot in the South End of Rockport with the most incredible view of the ocean and the twin lights of Thacher Island. It was one of the original houses built in around 1907. There are many protected places to sit outside as well as a wrap around covered porch overlooking the water. The sound and the smell of the sea envelop you.
The first floor has an open living/ dining room with huge windows onto the view. We now have a little english wood burning stove tucked into the original fireplace, which makes it very cozy in the winter time. There is a separate study/TV room with a convertible couch and pocket doors. The large kitchen with its scrubbed pine farm table has the same amazing view and has been completely renovated in a classical style. There is one full bath with a tiled shower on the first floor.
The second floor has four comfortable bedrooms, each with an ocean view, and two full baths, one with a clawfoot tub and one with a large tiled shower. Both are newly renovated.
There is an outdoor gas grille and outdoor table and chairs.

This house is a dream house to us. We had owned an adorable beach cottage just down the road from Arbory House for ten years after having fallen in love with Rockport and the south end of Rockport in particular.
We love the authentic yet unpretentious New England feeling of Cape Ann, its charming architecture, beautiful, friendly family beaches and unsurpassed views of the ocean. This house has all the charm of a 1907 vintage beach house, plenty of room for extended family to spread out and just simply the most exquisite and expansive view of the sea and Thacher Island.
Without a doubt, Arbory House is in one of the premier locations in Rockport. It is on a high ridge, called Paradise Cliff, with 270 degree views of the ocean. The neighboring houses are classic lovely old rambling Shingle Style beach houses. Several have been in the same families for generations. Houses like these have been described as 'The Architecture of the American Summer' by architectural historian Vincent Scully.
Our house does truly represent all that is best about summer, it is relaxed but beautiful with a mix of family Antiques and new wicker and comfortable upholstered furniture. my great grandfather's nautical art work adorns the walls. It has all the mod cons but also a great feeling of the past. To sit with a drink on that porch with friends and family is one of the great joys.
This was our third year spending a few weeks in August at Arbory House. Kate and Jason re wonderful hosts. Each year, they have made improvements to an already wonderful place to stay and nice additions to the kitchen supplies. Our family cherishes every minute spent together sitting on the porch, swimming at Cape Hedge Beach and exploring Cape Ann.
Our family has vacationed in Rockport for 45 summers. Since 1972 we have progressed from a flat, to cottages, to a large house to hold us all. After our last rental was no longer offered we were in despair of finding another home suitable for us. Well, it would seem we saved the best for last. I cannot describe the awe we felt, walking in and through to the wrap-around porch, and viewing our beloved Twin Lighthouses. The home was immaculate with amazing high end appliances, beautifully appointed, and equipped with touches one just doesn't expect from a summer rental. From the beginning dealing with Kate was a joy. She is warm and so accommodating. We returned home today from two "perfect Rockport" weeks. We are very thankful.

We had a very special vacation at Kate Shaw's house in Rockport. I knew the area because I had grown up spending summers there. The area hasn't changed much and has the same quaint feel to it that it had 50 years ago. I brought some girlfriends with me to experience the "East Coast". Kate's house was part of that experience. It's a beautiful, clean, charming beach house. I loved the peacefulness of the location. To awaken to the sounds of the waves and the birds was heavenly.
If you're looking for a quiet, rustic beach vacation, this is the place to go. Kate's house had all the basics that you would need. There's plenty of towels, sheets, and kitchen necessities. Kate is very organized and gives great suggestions for anything that you would want to do in Rockport and Gloucester. I would absolutely stay there again.
A friend and I spent a week here in the middle of February and were blown away by the beauty of the location -- dramatic ocean views from every window -- and the perfection of the house itself: incredible kitchen, cozy bedrooms, beautiful bathrooms. If it was this magical in the dead of winter; we can only imagine what it must be like in the high season of summer. Lovely and generous owners made it a perfect stay. Highly recommend this property.
This was our second stay at this beautiful home - once again everything was perfect. This home matches its exquisite setting - it's both elegant and comfortable. Our extended family prepared our Thanksgiving feast in the well-equipped kitchen, enjoyed ocean views from every window, and later played on the rocky beach just outside while catching the stunning sunsets. Kate is a wonderful host and responsive to any needs. I can't say enough about this magical place.
We had a week-long get-together with old friends from the Boston area, and this beautiful home was the perfect location. The house itself has been beautifully restored, with amazing ocean views from practically anywhere in the house. As soon as we walked in the front door, we could see through to the back porch with the incredible ocean views, and knew we had picked the right place. Everything worked as expected - the kitchen has lovely, high-end appliances, and the internet/wifi was excellent. The only problem was choosing between spending time exploring the beautiful Rockport area, or just relaxing at the house and enjoying the views. The owner was very responsive, helpful, and easy to work with, and gaining access to the house was simple and exactly as described. Highly recommended, and I would love to get back there for another vacation!
Rockport and Gloucester have their own historic houses, art galleries, restaurants and museums (In addition to great beaches, sailing and fishing!) If you want even more culture, it is a one hour trip either by car or commuter train to down town Boston. There are antiquing, sunset sails and great fried clams in Essex. Historic Salem, Ma. is less than an hour away. Buy your fresh lobster from the lobsterman down the road and cook it in our big lobster pots! Or you can buy fresh cooked lobster at Roy Moores in downtown Rockport, a five minute drive from the house. Hike the old granite stone Quarries with fabulous ocean views at Halibut Point State Park. 10 minute drive from house.
