Overview

Merrimack Valley & Essex County House Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedroom, 3 Bath, Newly Renovated Kitchen And Baths, Porch.

Our Classic New England Gambrel roofed house perches on its landscaped lot in the South End of Rockport with the most incredible view of the ocean and the twin lights of Thacher Island. It was one of the original houses built in around 1907. There are many protected places to sit outside as well as a wrap around covered porch overlooking the water. The sound and the smell of the sea envelop you.

The first floor has an open living/ dining room with huge windows onto the view. We now have a little english wood burning stove tucked into the original fireplace, which makes it very cozy in the winter time. There is a separate study/TV room with a convertible couch and pocket doors. The large kitchen with its scrubbed pine farm table has the same amazing view and has been completely renovated in a classical style. There is one full bath with a tiled shower on the first floor.

The second floor has four comfortable bedrooms, each with an ocean view, and two full baths, one with a clawfoot tub and one with a large tiled shower. Both are newly renovated.

There is an outdoor gas grille and outdoor table and chairs.

About kate johns shaw

I am a preservation architect and my husband is a lawyer. We live full time in upstate New York. We have two grown children.

kate johns shaw purchased this house in 2013

Why kate johns shaw chose Merrimack Valley & Essex County

This house is a dream house to us. We had owned an adorable beach cottage just down the road from Arbory House for ten years after having fallen in love with Rockport and the south end of Rockport in particular.

We love the authentic yet unpretentious New England feeling of Cape Ann, its charming architecture, beautiful, friendly family beaches and unsurpassed views of the ocean. This house has all the charm of a 1907 vintage beach house, plenty of room for extended family to spread out and just simply the most exquisite and expansive view of the sea and Thacher Island.

What makes this house unique

Without a doubt, Arbory House is in one of the premier locations in Rockport. It is on a high ridge, called Paradise Cliff, with 270 degree views of the ocean. The neighboring houses are classic lovely old rambling Shingle Style beach houses. Several have been in the same families for generations. Houses like these have been described as 'The Architecture of the American Summer' by architectural historian Vincent Scully.

Our house does truly represent all that is best about summer, it is relaxed but beautiful with a mix of family Antiques and new wicker and comfortable upholstered furniture. my great grandfather's nautical art work adorns the walls. It has all the mod cons but also a great feeling of the past. To sit with a drink on that porch with friends and family is one of the great joys.

Peaceful Beach House

  • 5 of 5

We had a very special vacation at Kate Shaw's house in Rockport. I knew the area because I had grown up spending summers there. The area hasn't changed much and has the same quaint feel to it that it had 50 years ago. I brought some girlfriends with me to experience the "East Coast". Kate's house was part of that experience. It's a beautiful, clean, charming beach house. I loved the peacefulness of the location. To awaken to the sounds of the waves and the birds was heavenly.

If you're looking for a quiet, rustic beach vacation, this is the place to go. Kate's house had all the basics that you would need. There's plenty of towels, sheets, and kitchen necessities. Kate is very organized and gives great suggestions for anything that you would want to do in Rockport and Gloucester. I would absolutely stay there again.

Spectacular house with views from every window

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I spent a week here in the middle of February and were blown away by the beauty of the location -- dramatic ocean views from every window -- and the perfection of the house itself: incredible kitchen, cozy bedrooms, beautiful bathrooms. If it was this magical in the dead of winter; we can only imagine what it must be like in the high season of summer. Lovely and generous owners made it a perfect stay. Highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review! Summer is wonderful in Rockport but the winter is very special too with the ever changing ocean view and complete privacy and quiet contemplation of nature augmenting the coziness of the house. I am glad you had the opportunity to stay in the winter and hope you will come back to experience the Spring, Summer or Fall!

Thanksgiving on the Ocean

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at this beautiful home - once again everything was perfect. This home matches its exquisite setting - it's both elegant and comfortable. Our extended family prepared our Thanksgiving feast in the well-equipped kitchen, enjoyed ocean views from every window, and later played on the rocky beach just outside while catching the stunning sunsets. Kate is a wonderful host and responsive to any needs. I can't say enough about this magical place.

Owner's Response: We are so happy you enjoyed your second stay with us and that your family Thanksgiving was joyous! You are wonderful guests and are most welcome any time. With both your stays being in the fall/winter, we are glad that you were able to appreciate the comfort and the "magic" of our house and its views in these special seasons as much as we do! Thank you for staying with us.

Wonderful Vacation at a Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

We had a week-long get-together with old friends from the Boston area, and this beautiful home was the perfect location. The house itself has been beautifully restored, with amazing ocean views from practically anywhere in the house. As soon as we walked in the front door, we could see through to the back porch with the incredible ocean views, and knew we had picked the right place. Everything worked as expected - the kitchen has lovely, high-end appliances, and the internet/wifi was excellent. The only problem was choosing between spending time exploring the beautiful Rockport area, or just relaxing at the house and enjoying the views. The owner was very responsive, helpful, and easy to work with, and gaining access to the house was simple and exactly as described. Highly recommended, and I would love to get back there for another vacation!

Breathtaking Location and Impeccably Detailed

  • 5 of 5

Our family members converged on Rockport from Germany, China and Cambridge. This house overlooking Thacher Island made for a perfect vacation. It is perched on a promontory and therefore enjoys 180 degree views of the Atlantic to the north, east and south. The house is very tastefully finished and furnished and we had a marvelous time during our week there. The owner has restored the place with a sensitivity and taste that seem nearly impeccable, right down to detailing of drawers and closets. The house was a wonderful size for five adults and two small children and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent again and recommend it to others.

Given the quality of the restoration of this house, it does not surprise me in the least to read that the owner is an architect specializing in traditional architecture and historic preservation. Does she have other gems of houses available for rental? that I'd like to know

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your very kind words. It makes us very happy when our house can be the setting for a joyous family holiday like yours. The peacefulness of the setting, the variety of places where people can come together or find a spot to themselves do lend themselves to harmony and fun! We do happen to have two other properties on VRBO that we make available to guests. Thank you for asking! One is an historic Italianate Brick townhouse in the trendy, art and antique filled small Hudson Valley city of Hudson, NY, (#475271). The other is a cute, clean and cheerful little beach bungalow in Naples, Florida, minutes' walk from a beautiful beach, (#375381).

Review of Arbory House

  • 5 of 5

This house overlooks the ocean and Thacher Island with its twin lighthouses. There is not a room nor porch from which you cannot see this incredible view. We were fortunate to have a full moon several nights so were able to partake of the vista in the amazing moonlight. A wonderfully equipped, large kitchen...great bathrooms....so many places to go within the house to have private time...Though we love to explore the greater Cape Ann area, the house itself was a vacation in and of itself!

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciated all the special aspects of the house, even the shining moonlit path across the water! Please come again!
