The Madeira Region:: Here in the Atlantic Ocean, not too far from the centre of Europe, we find the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. The archipelago is famous for its friendly people, exceptional natural beauty and mild climate. Madeira Islands are just a short trip from Europe, to a destination where you can combine holidays on the beach, in the mountains or in the city. Madeira and Porto Santo are the ideal places to relax and restore the balance of mind and body that you need to face the stress of daily life. Madeira (Wood) is a beautiful verdant island. It is Portugal's 'Jewel in the Atlantic'. The island is a haven for anyone who enjoys walking, whether your taste runs to gentle strolls or hard core hiking. Madeira’s system of irrigation channels, known as levadas, carry water down from the mountains on gentle gradients. These levadas provide a ready-made system of trails. There are 1300 miles of them, criss-crossing the island, and they have level footpaths running along their entire length.
Funchal-Santa Maria Maior: : Funchal was made a city on 21 August 1508 by Royal Charter issued by King Manuel I. It is the most important business, tourist and cultural in the Madeira Archipelago. Its name comes from a sweet-smelling wild herb called Foeniculum vulgare, more commonly known as fennel, which was abundant there when the first settlers arrived. The city of Funchal has plenty of leisure activities to offer. You can visit its magnificent gardens, wander through its picturesque streets and squares with Portuguese cobblestone pavements or simply stop and relax at one of the pavement cafés in the city centre. The settlement of the island began more than five centuries ago in the traditional, colourful Santa Maria neighbourhood, where the street of that name, built in 1430, is the oldest thoroughfare in the city. The narrow cobbled streets and the restored façades of the old buildings invite us to take a stroll to the traditional Mercado dos Lavradores.
This is a nice, clean, large, friendly and practical apartement. The kitchen is practical and well equipped, the dining table is very nice and there is a fine terrace. The area is mostly quiet, nice with large houses and gardens, quite close to Funchal centre. There are no shops in the nearest area, except a bakery. There is easy to find a parking place, but the streets around are very steep. You walk easily down to the old town in 15 minutes, but back again we preferred a taxi - costs 6-7 euros. The bus No 21 from the centre to Botanic gardens runs somewhat infrequent in the evening. The owner was reliable and provided good service. We will clearly reccommend this apartement, and we well rent it again when we go back to Madeira.'
Large, clean, well maintained apartment, with sunny terrace and a well equiped kitchen. Close to the beautiful old town of Funchal with many excellent restaurants and bars. This apartment is up a very steep hill as is a lot of Funchal, we found the walk down took about 20 minutes but a lot longer to walk up, however there are many Taxis which cost between 4-6 Euros depending on where you get in. The bus stop is just at the end of the street and they seem to be every 20-30 minutes and cost 1.10 Euro. The first trip on the bus costs 1.80 for a bus card that you can then top up in some shops and machines with credits for further journeys which are 1.10 Euro each. We found this a great place to stay as it was a quiet area with all you need just a short distance away such as restaurants, bars and supermarkets. The owner responded to all my emails quickly answering all the little questions I had and has provided an excellent and friendly service. We would love to go back.
We are 3 persons and we stay at this place for 12 days.
Madeira is a very beautiful and varied island. To recommend special to hike (the Levadas are uniquely) ,to enjoy unique plants, animals and the varied climate.
The Contact with the owner went smoothly and the keys were handed over without problems.
The problem of the flat is the second bedroom, which is an expanded garage. Since the other garages in the yard are not expanded, there is a lot of traffic noise. Also there is no ventilate properly, because there are only two small dormer windows (see photo).
The kitchen is very well equipped, but the cupboards smell very musty.
The climb to the apartment turned out to be very stressful, because the apartment is accessible only by steep streets.
All in all we enjoyed it very well.
Golf: PALHEIRO GOLF - This 18 hole, 6000 metre plus course was designed in 1993 by Cabel Robinson, and is skillfully set within the gracious parkland of the Quinta de Palheiro Ferreiro. Remarkable for tight fairways, fast greens, and judicious use of the beautiful trees that once covered the hillside, the course is a worthy challenge for all handicap levels. Palheiro Golf is situated some 2 km from this appartment, with magnificent views overlooking the town and bay. § SANTO DA SERRA GOLF - Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a completely new and spectacular 27 hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. Santo da Serra Golf is 20 minutes away from Funchal centre and 5 minutes away from the airport
