Incredible Ocean View, Privacy, Pool & Awesome Price

Bedrooms 1
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 4 - 8 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath

Casita Donna Marie is located 1,000 feet above Ballena National Park with incredible unobstructed views of the ocean, the Pacific coastline, Uvita valley and the tropical jungle. Enjoy relaxing on the deck or take a dip in your private pool while enjoying the sounds and vistas that surround you. The pool has gradual steps to a sitting bench for easy entry/exit and for a variety of spots for sipping your favorite drink. The casita is the only residence on the property giving you complete privacy. Wildlife abounds around the property, and from the deck there have been frequent spotting’s of white face monkeys, howler monkeys, parrots, toucans and many… many varieties of exotic birds. The monkey’s migration path is in trees along the property line. Even though you are above the ocean you can see and hear the waves crashing on the beach. Your fantastic view also includes Cano Island and the three sisters (a rock formation in the Ballena National Park). At night the vista changes to a wonderful view of the lights in the valley below, as well as the lights from the main village of Uvita.

Casita Donna Marie is located in a private community with many very nice homes and you will even pass by “Kura Design Villa”, a five star villa located only a few hundred yards from the property. The casita is near the end of a dead end road, currently the last residence on this road which gives you plenty of privacy. The palm lined driveway and main home building site (no current construction) is over 100 yards long, giving you plenty of area on the property to walk around to enjoy the views. The public road is barely traveled giving you another great place to walk. The floor plan is simple, very open to the outdoors and lots of windows to enjoy your fantastic views. There is not a need for air conditioning due to the breezes coming up the valley from the ocean during the day and there are mountain downdrafts keeping you cool at night! There is plenty of natural ventilation to accommodate the breezes.

As in many communities in Costa Rica the road to Casita Donna Marie requires a 4x4 vehicle. Driving just about anywhere in CR is a nature adventure and the road up is no exception. You go past two waterfalls through the jungle while having ocean views that will take your breath away. Trina, our property manager will meet you upon arrival at the bottom of the mountain to lead you up on your first trip.

The Uvita area, Ventanas, Dominical and Ojochal offer some of the most pristine beaches. There are many restaurants for variety serving international as well local cuisine are amazing and need to be enjoyed. Adventuresome and educational activities are available for every kind of interest. Our staff & the information center are available to assist with bookings.

Please call with any questions we are always available to assist.

About Donna or Bob

My wife and I are retired, although my wife is currently doing some consulting work. We live in New Smyrna Beach Florida but we spend the winters in Steamboat Springs Colorado for the ski season. Now that the casita is built we will likely spend two to four months in Costa Rica each year.

Donna or Bob purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Donna or Bob chose Puntarenas

We first visited Jaco Costa Rica in 2002 with both of our sons to enjoy a surfing trip. We all fell in love with Costa Rica and decided the following year to start looking for property. We had heard that the southern Pacific coastline is where the mountains meet the ocean and the vegetation was dense and green. We probably looked at some 30 pieces of property from Matapalo to the north down to Ventanas to the south. When our realtor drove us up to this property the family looked at each other and we knew for certain this is where we wanted to be.

What makes this cabin unique

The biggest appeal was the open unobstructed view we would have from anywhere on the property. The driveway is about 100 yards to the main building site (no current construction) and the view is open and beautiful; ocean, coastline, valley & jungle and no possibility of someone building in front of us.

LOVED our stay up on the mountain!

  • 5 of 5

We spent five days at this wonderful casita. The view is amazing, pictures don't do it justice!

Loved sitting out on the deck watching the toucans and wildlife, even saw monkeys one day. The casita is very comfortable and well appointed with plenty of room to cook. The plunge pool is cool and refreshing and has a nice bench so you can sit and enjoy. We stayed in several places on our trip to Costa Rica and this was our Favorite! Can't wait to go back.

A GREAT place to get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky enough to spend the entire month of February here and we can't say enough good things about this private get away! It's the perfect place for those who are there for the view and privacy and want to get back to the basics!!! Both the owners and the property manager were outstanding and very responsive to our needs. I would highly recommend a stay at this awesome little casita.

A Perfect Stay in Uvita

  • 5 of 5

Trina, property manager, met us in town, we followed her to the casita, & she gave us restaurant recommendations. The first trek up the mountain was adventurous to say the least—a midsize 4wd vehicle is a must. We quickly got use to the drive, but it is not for the faint of heart. This casita was our home away from home for the week, and provided us with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The kitchen was well equipped with utensils, pots, pans, tupperware, and small appliances. There was even some salt, pepper, canola oil, trash bags, toilet paper, and dish detergent left for us. Other items provided included: small cooler, beach towels, bath towels, hair dryer, music player, internet stick, and binoculars. Be sure to buy some bottled water because Trina recommends not drinking the tap water in the casita. It is worth noting that there is no air conditioning, but this is common in the area. The casita is designed to take advantage of the natural breezes and only gets really hot during the middle of the day; plus there is a ceiling fan & an electric fan. The pool and outdoor deck were our favorite parts & where we spent many afternoons relaxing. The deck is a great place to watch monkeys or toucans in the morning, & the pool was nice to come home to after a day of exploring. The casita is at the end of a long driveway & very secluded. You feel as though you are in the middle of the jungle but also graced with a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. The owners do intend to build a main house at the top of the property, but I believe the casita will still remain private.

Here are some of our recommendations. Jungle ATV tour based in Uvita was the highlight of our adventures. We also loved the Osa Canopy tour. Our favorite beaches were Playa Ventanas, Playa Uvita & the Whale’s Tale. Be sure to visit these all at low tide for the best experience. Finally, we enjoyed the hike to Nuayaca waterfalls in Domincal, but be sure to pack some bottled water for the the 4km hike each way & a bathing suit to enjoy the falls.

As for restaurants, we enjoyed a delicious fried snapper at La Parcela, a BBQ sandwich at Roadshack Deli, hot wings at Jolly Roger, & ravioli at Baker’s Bean. Our best meal of the trip was at the bar at the Uvita waterfall which you pass on your way up the mountain. Get the fish taco and a fruit smoothie—you will not be disappointed. My mouth is watering thinking about it. We look forward to our next trip & would definitely stay here again!

Romantic jungalo at the top of the world

  • 5 of 5

This little jungalo is located at the top of a mountain and is the last house on a dirt road. It is extremely secluded, private and the perfect place to stay, provided you really like the person you're rooming with. Your first venture up, then off, the mountain are INTENSE. It's not for the faint of heart. After a week, it's pretty enjoyable, but the first few times were intimidating, to say the least.

The place was great. The pool is a little bigger than it looks in the pics and is very deep. The kitchen was equipped with all you need to make meals. The water pressure (relevant) was very good. Bed was firm and comfortable. Place was very clean. There are no curtains and you should expect to wake with the sun (around 6am). It gets very bright. It is cicada season, and man, they are LOUD. There were a few smaller beetles in the house from time to time, I mean, you're in the jungle, afterall. We were able to stay outside long after the sun went down and were not attacked by bugs. Some nights were worse than others. Again, you're in the jungle.

The wifi is a wifi stick. We didn't realize and did not bring a computer to create a hotspot. There is no other wifi available.

Trina, the house manager, was very easy to work with. She emailed prior to arrival, arranged a place to meet and accompanied us up the mountain the first time.

The area was really great. It's a pretty authentic CR experience. It's not fancy. There are a lot of American, hitchiking hippies (A LOT), the beaches are beautiful, locals are very nice and we never felt in danger. The food is good (check Trip Advisor for recommendations).

Prepare to be a bit grungy the entire trip. Things are always dusty and sandy - not a bad thing. Don't worry about bringing a blow dryer or make up, ladies, it's not that kind of trip. Also, you're probably not going down the mountain more than once a day. You'll be out all day. The jungalo is about 20 minutes from town and 25 from the beach.

Check out Flutterby House and, if you can, take a surf lesson with Bodhi; you won't regret either.

Casita Donna Marie

  • 5 of 5

Wonderfully, quiet, serene location with beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding jungle. My husband and I had the opportunity to stay 6 nights at Casita Donna Marie in February. The steep 4 wheel drive road was worth the effort. During our stay we saw a group of Howler monkeys come through close by and many varieties of birds. The casita is equipped with modern conveniences and several days we stayed on the mountain and just relaxed and enjoyed the dipping pool. I would recommend this location for people who are used to getting out and looking for a beautiful adventure.

Amazing place

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 4 of our 7 nights in Costa Rica, my only regret is that we didn't have more time in Uvita and in Casita Donna Maria! We really loved everything about the's not touristy at all, the beaches (there are many close by) are beautiful, and each have something to offer, every meal we ate was delicious. The cabin itself was perfect for us. Everything is brand new and there is plenty of cookware which we took advantage of at least once a day. The deck has the most amazing views as other reviewers have commented and the pool is perfect to hop into to cool down. You really feel completely secluded in the middle of the jungle up on top of the mountain.

I'll add some more tips for anyone choosing to stay here:

. Stop at the waterfall which is on the road on the way up to the casita, on the right-hand side. It's only $1 to get in, you can just sit in the water and relax of go down it like a slide. Also get the fish taco, it's awesome and more like a fish burrito!

. Ventanas beach was our favorite, but definitely check out as many as you can. There are a ton of beaches along the highway and none of them are crowded.

. Do not fear the roadside Ceviche! Best ceviche I've ever had...hands down. There are multiple stands selling it at Playa Hermosa and all along the highway.

. There's a great place to watch the sunset near the casita. You can walk or drive there, it's at the point where you make your last left hand turn before the right hand turn onto the deadend road. Right outside a big gate with a strange small symbol on it.

. Take the Jungle ATV tour. You go way up into the mountains and back down to a different waterfall where you can jump from the cliff.

. The drive up/down the mountain was definitely more intense than I expected, it's a very bumpy ride but it was worth it to be at the top and our little Jimny did fine. Don't forget anything when going down!

Uvita has become the tourist destination of the south Pacific side of Costa Rica. There are banks/ATM's, various businesses for shopping, restaurants and medical treatment all within a short drive. Below are activities listed by Uvita's own information center who can arrange all kinds of activities for you.

Punta Uvita Beach and the Whale’s Tale: Take a 25-minute walk from the center of Uvita to Punta Uvita Beach at ebb tide to discover the famous whale’s tail sandbar. Enjoy walking through it to the point and dip in the warm, quiet waters at either side of this amazing formation.

Arco Beach: Accessible only at low tide through Ballena Beach (at Km 169). It offers a great combination of cliffs, primary forest, and caves. A beautiful spot to see Ballena Island and enjoy the sunset.

Ventanas Beach: Located about 15 km south of Uvita (before Km 174). Small, u-shaped beach with two caverns formed on the rock by the breaking waves. Great for swimming and playing with boogie boards.

Waterfalls and swimming holes

There is a beautiful waterfall 2 km from the center of Uvita. Start at Banco de Costa Rica and go straight ahead to the east. This fall is on the road up the hill right after Uvita’s graveyard.

There is also a nice waterfall and swimming hole in Dominicalito (15 km north of Uvita). It is on the road running behind the soccer field of Dominicalito, up to Escaleras. Ask locals for Poza Azul.

Self-guided activities

For a small fee of $6, you can hike on the trails of Rancho La Merced Wildlife Refuge. Here you can spot a great variety of wildlife (birds, mammals, insects, and reptiles) and experience different habitats: primary and secondary forest, mangrove, pasture, river, and beach.

For a similar fee, you can also hike on the rainforest trails of Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge and visit their birding tower and their orchid and butterfly gardens.
