Welcome to The Floating House, a unique modern tropical home that was shortlisted for 'house of the year award 2014' by The World Architecture News Awards (WAN).
The Floating House was designed by Costa Rican architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe and it also picked up five awards at the prestigious Costa Rican Binneal in 2015.
The house offers a unique living experience floating above the canopy of the jungle, totally surrounded by nature.
The Floating House has recently been featured in several design and architectural magazines including Inhabitat, Dezeen, Design Boom, World Architecture News and Su Casa Magazine.
It combines expansive ocean views, luxury interiors with premium service, infinity swimming pool, and all within walking distance to the beach.
We have been extremely conscious to make sure the house has had as little impact on its surroundings as possible. We have used a combination of local sustainable woods and have carefully picked colour schemes for the house to blend seamlessly with the outside environment.
The Floating House Experience:
Visual experience - being surrounded by a 180 degree view, spanning from the dawn rays over the mountains to the glow from the sun setting over the pacific.... is spectacular and breathtaking.
Eco experience - the house itself is made up of the three pods, floating above the canopy of the lush green jungle, connected by bridges and walkways. This was done to ensure we made the least impact on the natural surroundings. The floors are all sustainable teak and we also have solar water heating, a water treatment, UV water filtration and water capturing systems.
Nature experience - there is nothing quite like seeing monkeys from the same perspective as they are watching things too, from the tree tops. There are eagles that glide alongside and circle the expansive verandas of the house, completing the uniqueness of spending time at The Floating house.
Dining experience - the main living space is a huge open plan space with a solid teak dining table to seat 8 people. The gourmet chefs kitchen with a central island containing the large oven and gas cooker faces the expansive view to ensure an awesome view whilst preparing delicious meals. There are also comfortable teak high stools for the breakfast bar.
Relaxing experience - we have had some hand crafted low lounge sofas made to ensure sitting at the best position to take in the jungle and ocean as well as two lovechairs with colourful hand-stitched pillows from Guatemala. These are framed by floor to ceiling glass concertina doors which open up to bring the outside in.
There is also an impressive 24 meter back corridor connecting the living space to the bedrooms and bathroom made of over 300 pieces of vertical bamboo.
Sleeping experience - your sleeping experience is an essential part of any vacation and we have not spared on the important luxurious details. All beds are orthopedic, pillows allergy-free and sheets are luxury 100% cotton.
There are three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms share a huge open air spa bathroom and the third bedroom (downstairs) has a compact en suite.
The master bedroom has a king size bed and the second bedroom a queen and a single bed too. Each have louvered wooden concertina shutters that fully open onto the terrace. The rooms are 4mts by 4mts, have a large wardrobe, ac and a ceiling fan. Both have awesome views of the waves rolling in.
The third bedroom which is downstairs is more compact with a double bed and a toilet / shower en suite. It also has ac and a fan.
Poolside experience - the infinity swimming pool, sits below the house accessed by a few steps. It has been perfectly positioned for you to sit in the water and take in the sunset chorus of parrots squawking, monkeys howling or simply watch the waves.
Hermosa experience - we came here because we fell in love with surfing and Hermosa beach and you will do the same. The beaches of Santa Teresa are consistently best beaches year after year and Hermosa is the hidden gem. Consistent waves, wide sandy beach and (so far) never too many people around. We work with the best surf instructors in Santa Teresa. For the more adventurous surfer, there are several beaches and breaks for you to check out and enjoy along the peninsula too.
The little bay of Hermosa is growing and we now have some excellent dining options within walking distance from the Floating house. Koji's world class sushi for dinners and newly opened Colour cafe by chef Sebastian Reigner for breakfasts and lunches too. There is also a great Tapas spot and Pranamar restaurant and yoga shalla just a 10 minute walk along the beach.
Santa Teresa experience - a ten minute drive takes you into the hustle and bustle of the surf town of santa teresa where you will find restaurants, a french bakery, bars, tourist shops, ATM's and even a grocery store with organic fruit and veg.
Adrenalin experiences - further afield, there are personal nature tours to Curu, kayaking, zip-lining, mountain bike tours, gourmet dining tours, snorkeling and back at The Floating House, we can also arrange a private massage therapist, quality babysitters, an amazing private chef or even have your groceries delivered for you at check in.
We look forward to hearing from you at The Floating House.
Family from the UK who fell in love with Hermosa beach. Life long wish was to build a house and now we have created something really special for others to share.
Dahlia Nahome purchased this house in 2010
Location, location, location. There is only one beach as far as we are concerned and that is playa Hermosa de Santa Teresa. The best for families & the best for surfers.
This house offers up spectacular elevated views of the waves all the way down to cabo blanco as well as being close enough to walk to the beach in under 5 minutes.
The actual design of the house is completely unique for this area. The house floats above the canopy of the jungle, made up of three individual pods connected by bridges and a bamboo walkway.
The house has been designed by the award winning costa rican architect, benji garcia saxe.
We just wanted to drop you a line telling you that we really enjoyed our time staying at your beautiful house. The view from your place is amazing and waking up to that every morning is beyond words. Alexia was wonderful to deal with and Don Andres is such a great asset. We surfed non stop and spent most of our time at the beach enjoying the water. Everyone we came in to contact with were friendly and always informative and helpful.
Thanks so much
The L**Gt family
Our family of 4 (mom, dad, sons 13 and 10) had a phenomenal stay at the Floating House. Natallia and Alexia arranged for everything both before and during our trip -- surf lessons, horseback riding, atv tour, zipline, buggie rentals...as a result, we had the privacy of our own home but the convenience of a concierge. The house was a dream in the jungle and we were only a short trip to town and a few minutes from the most beautiful, unspoiled beach. Everything about our stay was special, from the parade of monkeys outside in the morning to our evening rides into town in our open buggy. The Floating House is a unique dream destination. We will be back!!
Every expectation was exceeded. Alexia took amazing care of us from the buggy rental to scheduling the tours. We had three teenagers and they could not have been more content. It was our first time to Costa Rica but it wont be our last!
We just got back from a fantastic week at the Floating House. There were 7 of us, all girls in our late 20s. We had the best time. The house was every bit what you see in the pictures. The views were so impressive. The house was very open and large so you really felt like you were in a tree house, surrounded by monkeys! Natalia, the house manager, took care of all details leading up to and during the trip. She was always accessible. Each morning we had a wonderful cleaning lady and at night security that made us feel safe.
The roads are pretty bad, so we chose to return our car and rent ATVs instead to get around. It was fun and way quicker and more efficient!
The beach is a short walk and even shorter ATV ride. It is so beautiful! We loved spending our days there.
Thanks for a perfect week! We will definitely be back.
My family of 4 (mom, dad, son 19 and daughter 17) just returned from 1 week vacation from Costa Rica. Stayed at Floating House and could not be happier with our stay. House is everything the listing says it is and even more - pictures of views do not do it justice.
House: was clean and ready upon arrival, from the moment we woke up to the moment we were ready to go to sleep we enjoyed all the doors and windows open. We were a little concerned about mosquitos and heat in living area (all bedrooms have AC) but we found the area to be nice temperature and comfortable. Didn't see many mosquitos to worry about. When there was no breeze and got a little warm we would just turn on the floor fan provided and were comfortable. A couple of nights we were even a little cold in the bedrooms. Monika kept the house clean every day, she would come early in the morning and kept everything spotless. Most mornings if we slept in late we couldn't even hear her picking up and cleaning - she would even wait a little while for us to wake up to ask if we were ready for her to clean our bedrooms. Monika even did our laundry a few days for a very small added charge. Another thing with teens we were concerned with not having a TV in the house to watch movies - but happy to say the we didn't even miss not having a TV, most evenings after getting back from tours and activities we just enjoyed the house, the view, and bonded with our kids by laughing and talking about the days adventures. We also felt very safe since there is a security guard there in the evenings that makes sure we are ok.
Concierge: Natalia & Alexia from Green Nest Estates were ABSOLUTELY THE BEST. They were available, friendly, informative and always courteous. They booked every one of our tours and we were hassle free through our trip. They even up fronted the deposits required on a couple of our trips so that we wouldn't have to bother with such details during our stay. One evening for some reason we didn't have water at all (apparently there was some type of unexpected leak that day) we contacted Natalia & Alexia and they got right on it. It was late in the evening (roughly 9:30 pm) and the water truck would be not be able to come until next morning. However Natalia managed to "persuade" water truck to come that night in order to make sure we were taken care of. Natalia even came that night to make sure we were ok. I couldn't ask for better concierge service.
There's a few places you stay that you know you'll never forget. The Floating House is one of those places. Even having seen the photos, we weren't prepared for the drama and breathtaking beauty of the house. It's the most amazing combination of natural setting, superb architecture and stunning interior design - a space that makes the most of its surroundings and position with proper open-plan living. We spent most of the first couple of hours wandering around different parts of the house, soaking up the views and saying wow a lot! At night it felt like you were on a ship, floating among the trees. Then waking up in the morning to a view of the ocean from bed and a couple of monkeys slipping by was something else. Jez and Dahls were brilliant hosts - there with a smile whenever you needed them - and slipping away when you wanted to enjoy the tranquility of the place. They know everyone and everywhere and will guarantee you'll make the most of Santa Teresa and the surrounding area - the beaches, the restaurants (best sushi I've ever had!) and of course the nature. The only problem was that we didn't want to leave the house - even with one of the best beaches in the world just 5 minutes away, the pool was just too tempting! I spent a lot of time in it just floating and looking at the trees. Pure happiness. Can't wait to go back one day. Thanks for helping make it an unforgettable honeymoon guys.
We just spent a week at the house and would love to return. It was fantastic. The house was clean and well stocked when we arrived. The daily housekeeping is wonderful. Wonderful views from your bed as you go to sleep and awake in the morning to the ocean in front of you. The infinity pool and the lounge beside it makes for a perfectly relaxing space, separate from the rest of the house. Jez is a perfect host. Paid us his morning visit daily and was available to answer questions and book adventures. Our neighbors, the monkeys, were always entertaining.
The house is situated by hermosa beach which is possibly the best beach on the pacific coast for both families and surfers alike. One of the best sushi restaurants in costa rica is walking distance from us too. We are situated just north of the busy surf town of santa teresa and the many restaurants and shops there too. From your home away from home, you can surf, horse ride, nature watch, have a private chef come and cook for you, massages, yoga, snorkel, fish, sail, zipline and much more...All of which we arrange for you as we have handpicked the best people in santa teresa to give the best experiences.
