4 Bedroom/2 Bath With Seasonal Pool And Spa - 5 Minutes From Town

Feel your cares disappear in our beautiful canyon retreat house. Hot tub, seasonal pool and extensive outdoor living spaces complement the casual and tastefully furnished interior spaces. 4 bedrooms (one is furnished as a private den/office with sofa bed) comfortably accommodate 6 to 8. 5 minute drive to town - 10 minute walk to local trails, and 10-15 minute drive to local beaches.

The Setting

Close-in, and mid-town, the Canyon House boasts a unique Santa Barbara foothills location. The residential ranch zoning creates wide open spaces and native back country landscape for an extremely quiet, private, and natural environment, a mere 5 minute drive (or a 30 minute walk) to shopping and dining on upper State Street. You are in your own lushly forested California mountain retreat that is closer to town than many suburban neighborhoods. Solitude and wildlife abound within the unique urban boundary setting.

The Property

The property is approximately 2 acres in the lower mission canyon foothills, with extensive deck space, including a large, private rear deck with a spa, barbeque, and dining set off the master bedroom and kitchen, a large front porch with close-in ocean views, and seating under the bouganvillia covered arbor, a large pool deck with changing area, and a seasonal outdoor fireplace and dining area on the lower level, adjacent to the extensive vegetable garden, greenhouse, seasonal blackberry bramble, and fruit trees. Many large, mature trees, plenty of parking and the best weather in Santa Barbara complete this enjoyable and peaceful property. Wildlife is common on the property, as are beautiful sunsets, with outdoor living spaces set up for privacy and peace. Access to popular foothill trails is a 10 minute walk away.

The House

A sloped path and 10-step stairway (warning - may not be easily accessible to persons with limited mobility) lead to the 4 bedroom craftsman-style home built on a raised knoll. While maintaining a relaxed feel, the house is tastefully furnished and equipped in an attractive and comfortable back country way. Master bedroom and bath open onto the back deck with spa. Each of the three other bedrooms has a view of Oreo the llama in her corral on the rear side of the property, and beautiful Cathedral Peak in the distance. With a total of 4 bedrooms, and two bathrooms, comfortable sleeping and living arrangements for up to 6 are provided (There are traditional beds for 6 – two queen and two twin, and there is a queen-sized sofa bed in the fourth bedroom/office/den). The kitchen has modern appliances, including washer and dryer, and there is a large screen entertainment center with very high speed wireless internet in the living room. Woodstoves in the den and master bedroom provide supplemental heat and atmosphere when temperatures drop, while informal dining for 6, plus a formal 6-seat dining room with china round out the comfortable and casually elegant interior

Older place, charming, very easy to get to state street sites

My book club group stayed for a long weekend in June. The living room and social spaces were fantastic for a group. Two large dining tables was surprisingly very useful: one for games and the other for meals.

Can't say a word against the owner who was very thoughtful and available.

It was strange, however, to get a complaint from the neighbors regarding an outside string of Christmas lights. There's no way the light could have been that bothersome. Plus, the oldest member in my group is in her seventies and having a light on is kind of a safety need. The little white lights seemed like an acceptable compromise but when the owner sent a message we did switch them off.

Didn't use the pool because it rained. Hot tub was eagerly anticipated but it was blown up with chemicals. I'm not very experienced with hot tubs but the chemicals made everyone cough while inside it.

Kitchen supplies were really scattered but we improvised using a pie plate as a serving bowl for example. We ate out in town mostly so we might not have noticed or cared otherwise.

We had to buy hand soap for the bathrooms...that was an unfortunate inconvenience when we'd been traveling all day and required the facilities only to discover no soap. We pulled out the sofa bed and the mattress cover was gross. It might have been easily overlooked by the cleaners.

These are all very small complaints. Could easily have been 5 stars and I dont mean to distract from the positives. The location feels delightfully remote but it's so fast and easy to get into town. The house is breezy and quiet and definitely lulls you into relaxation. Our group of 7 had plenty of room.

Owner's Response: I appreciate this review, and the opportunity that this review gives, to emphasize the importance of early, and clear communication. The issues: Soap, the need for night lighting (inside the house), and the hideaway bed could all have been solved within 30 minutes had these guests let me know via telephone call, text message, or email. As any of my guests can attest, I am only a 10 minute drive away, and I am very responsive, as I care deeply about my guests' comfort and enjoyment. Soap supplies were available in a storage shed, the sofabed mattress cover had a rust stain from the bed frame (it had been washed clean, but the stain was visible) in the corner (the mattress and cover are less than a month old), and there were numerous options (including a dimmable light in the living room and emergency night lights plugged into most rooms) for night safety lighting in the house. I would have been happy to bring the replacement mattress cover right away, as well, and have since replaced the cover. Unfortunately, I was not informed of any of these special requirements, or issues until I read about them in the review. I try very hard to "read" my guests and understand both the "fit" for my home, and the degree of independence that they want - this group seemed like they wanted to be private and autonomous, so I did not reach out after the first welcome for fear of disturbing them. I am grateful for the lessons learned here - I have added a few items to my pre-checkin checklist - and am very happy that they, overall, enjoyed their stay at the house. I hope that they return for another retreat!

Place to relax

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Canyon Retreat! It's far enough out of town to be fully undisturbed but still close enough to easily access the shops etc. The house is equipped with everything one needs (and actually much more), and we felt at home immediately! Everything is well-maintained (for example the pool is cleaned regularly) and the owner really cares that we feel well (but in an unobtrusive way). A very nice trail that goes up in the mountains starts close to the house, and sitting on the porch one can observe hummingbirds! There are plenty of books, guidebooks and maps of the region in the house. I can absolutely recommend this place particularly for people enjoying nature who want to relax away from the city, without impairing comfort.

Canyon House was a perfect place for our 3 families to regroup at the end of each day during the very busy week surrounding our son's wedding. We found both the indoor and outdoor living areas to be relaxing spaces. The kitchen was convenient, and the owner very helpful in supplying information about the house and the area. It was a great getaway, and it helped us to get together with our family at this special time.

Incredible Setting

We spent six weeks at Canyon House and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The setting was bucolic (orange and lemon trees, beautiful plantings, orchids, geranium, wonderful shade trees). We saw deer and coyote and heard owls and frogs. Pretty magical. The outdoor space was wonderful. We had sun on the back deck for breakfast and watched the sun set from the front porch with a tease of a view of the ocean. Very, very lovely property. The owners were so helpful and attentive. We can't say enough good things about their hospitality.

Memories for a Lifetime

Our family was recently in Santa Barbara for a beautiful wedding this weekend. It took place in downtown SB State St. so we found Canyon house to be an amazing price and near the wedding. My family is buzzing in delight from everything SB had to offer. And Canyon House the hidden jewel on the outskirts (4mi) played a major part in my family's experience. I am a young active person who kayaked, mountain biked, hiked, and ran the hills near the Canyon House. It was an awesome challenge, yet in the that setting everything was so enjoyable I felt I could go for days. Another aspect were the multiple seating areas outside and inside the house. We found conversations breaking out on patios near the pool, in the living room, near the llama's pen, in the dining room, near the hot tub and bbq, just everywhere. We just felt so at home wandering and using the entire property space. I for one came home rejuvenated by my stay at this home. Being from the Midwest it reminds me of beautiful summer home in Michigan from my prep school days. But the charm is also in the rustic California outdoor setting, not everything is manicured but it made for an authentic Santa Barbara experience. The owners are a pleasure to deal with, I had some minor incidents that were not only addressed by the Owner but they went above and beyond. I can see she makes a real effort to run a business but her warmth and attention show she also enjoys creating memories. Thank you Canyon House Owners

Great Getaway
